Regarding transfers: Don't try to use logic. Purvis would've gotten 40 mins a night on this years team but instead decided to sit out a year and transfer. A curious decision for someone supposedly wanting to go to the NBA ASAP. You just never know.

Purvis wasn't going to get 40 minutes because he wanted to play the point and run the offense through him and the high pick and roll.
1) we weren't going to run the offense through him and 2) he was a shitty point guard.
Fuck Purvis. 3/24/2014 7:22:22 PM |

Purvis isn't playing PG next year with Boatright there and may not even start with a 5-star SG coming in. Do think he will do well though in that program.

No he didn't. He thought he was going to get major minutes for a high-major team that had NCAA tournament chances. Which is exactly what he did.
These mid-major kids transfer to get a little more spotlight and some chance at glory. You can blow it up at mid-major but have a shitty game in the conference tournament and no one will ever know you existed. If you're a scrub on an ACC team you get on national TV a couple nights a year just because it's a blowout and you can jack halfcourt shots and throw behind the back passes while the crowd goes nuts.3/24/2014 9:05:47 PM |

He ended up getting surgery this season for some shoulder problem he's had for a while. I suspect that was probably a big factor in his willingness to sit out for a year.3/24/2014 9:45:05 PM |

How could a player not like playing for Gott?? You're not required to play defense, and there's no motion in the offense so you can just stand there til the ball comes your way

Our tourney chances weren't that great coming into the season. His appeal to coming here were two things - Play in the ACC for a school where basketball mattered and compete for a starting role. Remember that coming into the season we didn't really have a PG (Zo was a combo) and our other guard was a guy who had done nothing for 3 years. He absolutely thought he was competing for a starting gig and when he lost out in the middle of the year he sulked a little. He just handled it a lot better, bounced back and appreciated what he did have a lot better than a total bitch like Purvis.3/25/2014 8:07:04 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
I thought Purvis wanted to switch to/play some PG and Gott didn't like that idea? I know when Zo went down we tried Purvis at the point and he was really bad and that's when Tyler turned it on.
The only advantage I saw to having Purvis on this year's roster was that he was the key card we held in almost landing J. Randle, that would have been a difference maker. Having Purvis for the full season, would have just meant we wouldn't have offered Dez Lee. Purvis would have still been splitting time with Turner, and the way Turner played later in the year, not sure Purvis would have been on the court as much as he'd want. 3/25/2014 8:43:18 AM |

It would have been awesome if we could have kept Purvis for a year and gotten Randle. Then Purvis got hurt so we didn't have his shitty play take away from Barber/Lewis/Turner minutes...we would have had Randle for a year and probably made the Elite 8 or better...then Randle would go to the NBA and we could have kicked Purvis to the curb as well.

I feel like purvis is going to be pretty good and saying he wouldn't have gotten better and having shitty play is just sour grapes. I expect cat to get better, I expect all our freshmen (and maybe our juniors) to get better, why wouldn't purvis 3/25/2014 8:58:49 AM |

I was shitting on Purvis earlier this year because I remember his free throw shooting was beyond terrible. If i recall correctly it was in the 50s and i have NEVER saw a guard with such a low FT shooting percentage. I thought that Lee was an equal replacement. However, towards the end of the year I have to reconsider that. Even though Purvis FT was questionable i never recall him turning the ball over so much like Lee. He had good ball handling skills and good athleticism as he could drive and dunk. Its also not a fair comparison because Lee is older and had a lot of experience in college BBall. I see no reason why Purvis cant improve a lot at Conn. A big jump would to get his FT shooting in the 70s. However, I still dont see him as a PG b/c he loves to shoot too much, im still boggled why the hell he wants to play that role. 3/25/2014 9:44:36 AM |

We've got Anya. I also think Washington could add some weight and play the 5 spot. He's a good rim protector and could really stretch the defense.
Even without TJ, we should have a solid team next year ... the deepest since Gott's been here
PG: Tyler, Cat SG: Lacey, Dez SF: Ralston, twins? PF: Freeman, Abu C: Washington?, Anya3/25/2014 9:48:58 AM |

Freeman and Washington can both log a few minutes at center...especially if we're playing a smaller team.
I also hear we're looking at a transfer/late recruit at center. All we need is someone to give Anya an extra breather or if he gets in foul trouble (god forbid an injury). 3/25/2014 9:53:31 AM |

Yeah...I'm still not worried about the center position...but it wouldn't hurt to have some insurance.
We'll essentially have 4 guys (Anya, Freeman, Washington, Abu) for two positions (PF/C). That's more than enough. And giving Abu the benefit of the doubt...I don't mind having any of those guys play major minutes. I'm really pumped about our frontcourt next year.
Only toss-up, for depth purposes...is a PG transfer. I'm crossing my fingers. 3/25/2014 11:00:35 AM |

Our biggest concern is definitely point guard. We have two guys who are good at different things but each have giant holes in their game that make them liabilities at various points in the game. Cat just isn't wired like a PG, he's an undersized 2 that can make a nice pass every now and again. Best we can hope for is he improves his jump shot. Tyler is a great playmaker, but playing him means we're a man down on defense. They are both fuck ups and unreliable in close games. Their limitations puts a pretty hard cap on how good we can be next season. 3/25/2014 11:19:45 AM |

Still hoping that Paige somehow leaves ... but considering UNC guys rarely leave (even when they should), I'm not counting on it.
Other than Smart, I can't think of a PG in the draft I'd take over him though. Certainly not Semaj from Xavier; Ennis is a toss up. 3/25/2014 12:33:17 PM |

pls to practice beating the press in the offseason. That shit killed us when it counted this year, and that is coachable. 100% a reflection of coaching focus. And while you are at it ... figure out how to inbound the ball without throwing over half court every time.

We have two good young pgs. They have been inconsistent like young players but have both shown flashes of brilliance and will only get better. As soon as one figures out how to shoot 3s (which lewis did at the very end of the year) they will be unstopable. Before the stlouis game Lewis was on a legendary tear of assist to turnover ratio. Cat will only get better.
We have one center who might not be able to play big minutes and 3 power forwards. We have no idea if Abu will be able to see the floor or not and the other guys are foul prone. With 3 big men you will be in deep foul trouble every single game. 3/26/2014 11:36:04 PM |
