Feel dumb for not getting tickets before even the second night sold out.

I heard their Coffee song on Pandora the other day. Not the least bit impressed. However, after reading this thread I've decided to give the whole album a chance.

Listened to their newest album (one with Coffee). Didn't interest me. I'm not saying it sucks, rather just didn't appeal to me.

To me, it's a nice live show, but there's not much to the record.

Seattle show sold out well in advance - pretty surprising given that KEXP really doesn't give them much airplay.

KEXP is cool and all, but terrestrial radio doesn't have the kind of tastemaking influence it once did, especially outside of Top 40.

Yes - it's about 3,000 miles from Durham, there was about 30 people at their show in February, and many notable artists don't sell out Neumos (on a Tuesday when there were other similar genre shows around town). And like I said, not a lot of airplay here. Great for them - not sure how the word got out, but right on.

I don't disagree with the 'bandits point, but isn't relevant in Seattle where KEXP remains at the epicentre of 'tastemaking influence', much more so than any other source.

More than the internet? I find that hard to believe.

I guess I should say that I understand that KEXP (particularly with/because of their live sessions) is a bit of an echo chamber in terms of its relationship to the blogosphere, moreso than a regular college station might be. But is it KEXP that's steering the ship, or the other way around?

Probably a different situation in Seattle given that KEXP is so abundantly popular and ingrained in the culture and actually on the dial (rather than just streamed as it is in other markets, which is much different). The internet has its place, but by the time albums are getting reviewed on Pitchfork or whatever, they've already seen airplay. They're usually pretty open about bashing internet rating sites and doing their own thing. KEXP has a tangible presence which I think resonates pretty strongly. All of the in session stuff seems to support that the artists are in tune to that. It's definitely an outlier market - fortunately for Seattle and unfortunately for elsewhere.

Of course they do also champion and practically place bands like Shovels & Rope on the map, which is hard for my ears to take.

If anyone has extra tickets to the 10/31 show I'll buy them. Probably going to give in and pay way too much for them later this week otherwise. Nothing else going on in October. :|

Just got the album today (way late, I know) to see what everybody's talking about since all my old Raleigh bros talk about it so much. Found it pretty uninteresting. Sad face.

Great show for both Flock of Dimes and Sylvan Esso.

The album's really grown on me to the point that I just checked to see if they had any shows in the bay area coming up soon. Turns out their next two shows are here, but they're both sold out. Fuck me for being late to the party, I guess.

Alright, I ain't gonna lie, at first I was thinking to myself, shit another DJish band? Where has the love for acoustic instruments gone?

But, I gave these guys a good listen, and I really like the sensual, sort of anti-pop sound of the leading lady that you don't find in a lot of "indie" electro bands these days. I also really like that they go beyond standard I IV V chord combinations, and that they explore with dissonant sounds more frequently than usual. Of course, I am fully aware that there are sub genres in the electro, or DJish bands as I like to call them, but what you hear is what you hear. And I like there take on it.

Still though, the last acoustic band that I can think of having a major impact was the Avett Brothers, and they ended up becoming a little more poppy. A lot of great acoustic stuff lately, like the Butchers and the Builders or even Devil Makes Three goes largely unnoticed.

It's funny that you say that, because her other band is a straight-up Appalachian deal.

Except not. Mountain Man are still together, but Sylvan Esso are in an album cycle. You gotta tour while the gigs are there.

Did Dave Grohl ditch Foo Fighters when he started Them Crooked Vultures?
