No one should be surprised, Getts has been saying we'd look at DEs in the draft for months, and even said yesterday not to be surprised if we took one on day two. It's just simple math, we can't pay both Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson $18mil a year. One of them has to go, and Ealy looks like a guy who could step right in and replace their production in a year or two. 5/9/2014 9:21:59 PM |

I desperately want a tackle to at least come in and compete with Bell for the LT spot
But I feel better about our o-line having a big mobile QB who can roll out sometimes. I'd feel a lot worse if we had some statue like my Pack's Rivers or my Vols' Manning 5/9/2014 10:05:29 PM |

Yeah, I do like the picks, but I'd be interested to hear why they didn't pick Morgan Moses over Ealy. I think we brought him in to a private workout so I guess they saw something they didn't like. On paper he looked like the perfect fit for us at LT. 5/10/2014 12:54:02 PM |

I think I missed a trade, somehow we ended up with Bene' Benwikere, CB, San Jose State, and Atlanta has our 5th rounder?
edit: gave up our 5th and our 7th to Minn for their 5th; Minn traded our 5th to Atlanta
leaves us with one pick left (6th) unless we trade down. still need a tackle.

Wouldn't be a Panthers draft if a RB wasn't picked. Overall I'm happy with the picks. I assume they are going to sign some journeymen lineman and try to patchwork it this season which can sometimes work out just fine. 5/10/2014 5:08:11 PM |

speaking of how ridiculous draft grades are:
http://nfl.si.com/2014/05/10/2014-nfl-draft-grades/?eref=sihp
Quote : | "Carolina Panthers
Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman got some great value picks, though Florida State receiver Kelvin Benjamin went about as projected as the 28th overall pick. However, getting Missouri defensive lineman Kony Ealy with the 60th pick was a steal, if you believe the many first-round grades he had. Perhaps the best value Carolina got came in the third round, with LSU guard Trai Turner, a true mauler who fits the Panthers’ power offense perfectly. Tre Boston is a nice-sized safety who will help in the defensive backfield, and Stanford running back Tyler Gaffney fits the Panthers’ power prototype. They still need receivers, and Benjamin is an unfinished project, so it would be fair to ding the Panthers a bit because they didn’t take advantage of such a deep wideout class.
Grade: A-minus" |

Quote : | "Carolina Panthers: C
Top needs: WR, T, CB, S
Needs: C- Value: C
Summary: For a team that had a huge season in 2013, the Panthers entered the 2014 draft with some major needs. The biggest needs for me were on offense, where Cam Newton is facing the bad combination of a lack of guys to catch passes and a lack of protection when he drops back. Kelvin Benjamin is a tantalizing physical talent at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, with the ability to make contested catches. But sometimes those catches are contested because he's not able to separate consistently. Benjamin ran 4.61 in Indy which, while great for his size, reflects the fact that he's not a burner. I think Jordan Matthews could have been a good fit there, but Carolina placed a bet on Benjamin's upside. Kony Ealy was a decent value in Round 2, but he'll need time to learn how to be a three-down defensive end. Trai Turner is a favorite of mine as a guard prospect, but questions at tackle linger. The Panthers went after help in the secondary later on, but I saw a handful of safeties I might have considered ahead of Tre Boston. I think the Panthers got some good football players, but some of the concerns I had regarding roster holes remain. How quickly Benjamin can make the leap and produce for Newton will be key." |

Carrington Byndom CB Texas
David Foucault OL Montreal Carabins
Jared Wheeler OT Miami
Marcus Lucas WR Missouri
Shaq Rowell NT WVU
Denicos Allen LB Michigan St
Andrew Norwell OL Ohio St
Joel Murphy TE BU

Also looks like we signed former WV RB Noel Devine to a tryout:

Devine is interesting as I remember he put up video-game stats in college but didn't get drafted. Evidently he played in the CFL last year and sucked. He killed it at WV's pro day this year though:
Quote : | "Noel Devine put up 24 in the bench press. Would have been 3rd best at this year’s NFL Combine.
Noel Devine ran a blistering 4.25 in his return to WVU’s pro day." |

I hate UNC as much as the next guy, but still don't understand why Carolina wasn't all over getting Hurst to join us as an UDFA. Guy was solid for 4 years, projected 1st/2nd round pick heading into the year, breaks his leg in the bowl game, goes undrafted? Quite odd. 5/12/2014 11:19:34 AM |
