I still get out and try everything I can think of in my bass/crappie/bluegill/catfish pond. Haven't caught a thing since the weather cooled down. (lipless crankbaits, topwater, spinners, crawdad rigs of various types, chatters)
Tried shallow water morning, mid day, evening, night. Tried deeper area/drop-offs the same times as well.
One thing that has me thinking is the amount of leaves/pinestraw that comes into my pond. I have a great deal of muck/un-decomposed material going on (but I still had that in the spring as well), and no real structure areas.
I am about to add an aerator (slowly), but I wonder if their is a lack of oxygen that has the fish in a vegetative state of sorts...
Any thoughts? Happy to have one of you expert bass fisherman come out one day and give it your best shot ... I'm no expert bass fisherman, so it could all be my lacking technique ... 1/14/2015 3:29:38 PM

just curious, say a guy had a big ol' fancy bass boat, but no engine on it, just his trolling motor. would that technically meet the rules for your electric/paddle tourneys? 1/14/2015 9:57:05 PM

not in a fiberglass boat, had a guy use a 20ft center console but it was still aluminum. Most guys have 1446 jon boat with a deck and two motors one foot control and transom mount to help you move along. 1/15/2015 6:04:08 PM

there's a lot of water out there. you've got to know what characteristics to look for in a good spot and what techniques to apply when you get there, but location and technique change with the seasons. you've got to be willing to put in the time to figure out what works.
hell, folks on the river watch where and how i'm fishing and i will even chat with them when they're near and tell them what bait to use and exactly what to do and they still don't get it right.

you have to release all stripers caught in the cape fear. they are illegal to possess in the cape fear and its tributaries.
but when i catch them in the neuse i like to give them to my granny to bake in this pseudo fish stew she makes. it's awesome. 3/14/2015 2:25:11 PM

^that place is a damn zoo in march and april. I did a canoe trip there last year and between the crazy aggressive boats everywhere, the crazy rednecks trying to steal our campsite/threatening to kill us, and the golf ball sized hail/tornadoes, we were lucky to make it out alive. ![](images/beatup.gif)
Would not recommend. Unless you know of a private boat ramp to use, prepare to spend half the day putting in/taking out. The ramps around weldon looked to be at least an hour wait at any given time. 3/14/2015 8:51:12 PM

^^i used too. now it's insanely crowded with idiot rickies as ^ said. i can catch them on the neuse and cape fear just fine, so i don't bother. it's also a long haul for me. i can be at the downtown wilmington boat ramp in 20 minutes and the stripers are bigger down here because it's a catch-and-release-only fishery. 3/14/2015 9:28:46 PM

I never had access to a boat when I used to like fishing. We always bank fished on the Roanoke at this secret spot in Bertie (Off some dirt road etc) and never had much luck with the stripers. But we always caught some good sized catfish. om nom nom

Pond fishing has picked back up this week for me. Caught a fat little 11 inch largemouth, so the two year olds in my pond are looking healthy. Cant wait to see what the big boys look like - hopefully plenty of eating for them last year led to some weight/size gain, cause they were VERY skinny last year. 4/2/2015 4:21:19 PM

How often do you go fishing with friends and family and let them use multiple rods? Cause that's a fair number for one man to use. 4/4/2015 11:02:39 PM

NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
i try to fish weekly. it doesn't always work out that way with weather, work, etc., but i fish more weeks than i don't. i fish with folks who don't have their own tackle more than i do with folks who do.
but even when i go by myself i'll usually take 6 rods. i don't have to spend time switching lures that way. just grab another rod. also, those rods cover everything from fishing for bream and crappie in a pond to king mackerel fishing and offshore bottom fishing. there's also a decent amount of surf fishing tackle there. i had all my stuff and then inherited all my dad's rods.
a collection this size isn't all that uncommon for someone who does a few different styles of fishing.
with that said, there are a few things there i could stand to sell off. there are also a few there that i don't use, but keep for sentimental reasons.

I guess I never really considered the time aspect if 20 different rods are basically just for 20 different lures. seems like it would fill up the boat though. 4/4/2015 11:48:28 PM

bass boats have huge rod lockers on each side of the front deck. they will have 20 or more rods, but they will be different lengths, different weights, different speed reels, spooled with different kinds of line, etc. to make them specific to different techniques (flipping, pitching, crankbait, drop shot, topwater, etc.). they will usually take out 6 or 8 that they plan to use that day and have them on the deck, but the others are in the lockers in case things change or they break one.
so my setup is analogous to those 6 or 8 they have laying on the deck. i'll have 6 when i'm by myself and up to 8 if i have someone fishing with me. that way i don't spend time swapping baits. also, sometimes i'll go out with intentions of applying two different techniques (like trolling for stripers deep, but maybe i'll switch to casting for them if they are shallow instead). in that case, i'll take 3 or 4 trolling rods (so i can change depth and color quickly) and then 3 or 4 spinning rods i can use to cast for them shallow.
or say i'm going cobia fishing. i will anchor up and fish 4 rods, but i also need two rods for catching bait (one for me and one for my partner) in case i can't find any to get in the cast net. i also like to have a two light plugging rods on-board in case i see a school of spanish feeding or hear a crazy awesome report of a trout bite. that's 8 rods right there. 4/5/2015 9:25:48 AM
