"what do you (and others who agree with you) think the solution is? bigger airplanes? larger (and fewer) seats? i assume, then, that you're willing to pay more for your tickets? because you can go ahead and pay more NOW and get a first-class seat"

This. People who say "airlines need to provide more room" need to realize the average amount of room is directly proportional to the ticket pricing. Tickets in economy class are so relatively inexpensive now because there is more sets on the plane with less room. Remember when seats had more room? Well, that's also when flying was a luxury. There are seats with more than ample room in business and first class, and they cost less than what a "regular" seating used to cost back when all seats were the same.

I think it would be awesome if all the seats on the airplane could slide independently, and people paid PER INCH of space in front of them. That way, everyone only pays only for the space they need. In fact, I wish we paid per pound of luggage that we check in.

In the meantime, I will keep [carefully] reclining my seat back as far as it goes when I need to get some shut-eye on the 8 hour trans-atlantic flight. If Shaq is behind me, he can ask the flight attendant for a seat in the exit row, if there are any of those left. If not, tough luck, he should shave paid for first class.

As far as the "knee defender" device, how would you feel if someone sat next to you with a "window shade lock", "air vent plug", or "seat divider" (that last one is a real thing)?

You realize most airlines have an "economy plus" or similar section where you get extra legroom for like $25 right? I live in Dallas so I mainly fly American and have status so it is free for me but there is your chance to pay a little extra for a little extra legroom.

window shade lock, unless you were in the window seat, is a violation of personal space (ie your seat).

air vent plug, every plane ive been on each person gets their own. request people not point theirs at you and close yours is about all you can do.

seat divider Ive seen. Thats going to be up to the airlines to solve, as its sorta shared but also first-come first-serve. Those just establish first come.

Knee defender: my solution for it is enjoy kicking your seat (to music is my preference), or bring a noisy kid to keep everyone awake. That said Ive yet to see any policies by any airline banning it.

even if you ARE in window seat, you don't own the shades. The crew usually tells you when to keep it shut and when to keep it open on long flights where people are expected to sleep. When there is no direct instructions from the crew, it's a shared thing just like the armrests.

What if they blocked your plug is what I mean? Knee defender blocks someone else's seat, not yours.

Armrests are not first-come-first serve, they are shared, meaning both of us can rest our elbows on it at the same time unless you decide to be a dick and install one of those partitions. At least they could have made the partitions with a split in the middle, you would still look like an antisocial tool but at least a fair one. If you use them as shown in the photo above, you are taking shared space away.

"seats need head holders so you can sleep upright without your head flopping around"

don't most planes already have this? every flight i've cared to sleep on has had folding "wings" on the headrest that you can use to keep your head from flopping around too much

they're not perfect by any stretch - which is why i bring a neck pillow with me (which is all of $10) - but they do the job (for me)

I just want to point out that CarZin said this on the first page:

Quote :
"The guy that refused to follow the flight attendants instructions should be charged."

I don't agree. I think the smart thing would be for the airline to sue him, as they've had a material loss (fuel, time, etc) - but airline attendants aren't police, and I'm glad that neither one of them got arrested for this terribly petty shit considering the state of airline travel now.

Yes I do realize, and I will often pay for it if I feel that it's worth it. But how expensive it is generally correlates to how long the flight is, and it's often not $25, it's more like $75 or more on flights where comfort would be a bigger priority.

Also, and I truly don't know the answer on this, but to everyone saying the fares are kept low by the airlines finding ways to add rows...do we know for sure that this is actually happening? Do we know for sure that airlines are cutting fares because of this, or is the money really going into their pockets while they continue to charge as much as they reasonably can for any given flight?

Nah. They were removed from the flight and that was the end of it. No arrest because the airline viewed it as a customer service issue, and not a threat to aviation security.
Though, I bet if the guy really wanted to, he could press charges of assault against that woman for throwing her drink on him.

2. maybe you have a watermelon for a head?

I saw a complaint in this thread about people bringing bags they should check in order to save money on baggage fees. That is one case where I blame the airlines, as how could they not see that becoming a problem after deciding to nickle and dime us? When I fly, it is usually with a guitar, and I can see people staring me down thinking I am going to take their overhead space. What they fail to realize is I am usually flying out of Burlington, VT. This means the plane is usually a glorified Cessna or a small regional jet. In other words the overheads are about the size of a cigar box so they can relax, I'm gate checking it.

As for the knee defender, the person using that is a real dick. Like it or not when you are crammed in a can for a few hours there has to be some compromise.

^ that pisses me off the most, is checking baggage. I have to check mine due to my shaving kit. Otherwise Id carry it. Id check it if there wasnt a cost to save overhead. They really need to figure that out as half of why the overheads are packed are people dont want to pay the fee.

Igor Ive never been on a flight where any staff has said anything about the shades. Ive had seat neighbors ask and Ill shut/open it, but to me thats one of the perks of having a window seat.

On the armrests, ya they are shared but Ive seen more confrontations over anything else over them. Most times its over "first-come first-serve".

Im surprised they didnt arrest both of them. You get arrested for a lot less on a plane now.

instead of paying for checked bags, you should pay a flat fee for the seat and then a per/lb cost for the total weight of you and your luggage
