On a more serious note, though the Freddie Gray MURDER had racial elements to it, i think that largely it is a class/SES.

Many of the police in baltimore are black, as are many residents. However, like in every other place in this country, the police are employed to serve the wealthy and middle classes, while going into poor neighborhoods to do dirt

^^ I don't think the race of the perpetrators matters as much as the clear systemic bias.

I haven't seen too many intelligent folks say that the officers go out with the intention of gunning down a minority...

Systemic racism

Its rarely the officials that are racist anyway. Its the system that is racist. Black president and attourney general dont stop the criminal justice system from being racist.

I see tear gas canisters being fired at the crowd. I don't know if this was a result of violent protests, or if this is just trying to disperse crowds in order to enforce the curfew.

Perhaps we should turn our attention to the police report due Friday. I do not expect the police report to own up to anything more than the police have already admitted, which is they didnt buckle the guy into the wagon when they carted him off.

If that is all they look at, i dont see any real consequences falling on the officers. That seems easily dismissed with a "oh well, i forgot" or "gee, i thought he was strapped in. Guess not".

Im not sure of the protocol for getting him medical attention when he asked. Anyone?

Now, an autopsy might show something different. An autopsy might show injuries sustained during the take down, which may conflict with police reports that he was arrested without incident.

At the very least, coming out of this we should see some type of legislation that requires the police to get medical aid if someone being arrested asks for it. I don't see that as being too difficult to implement.

Sure, that is a right that would eventually get abused, if nothing else to delay for a few hours jailtime or something like that, but if the guy thought he needed medical attention, he should have gotten it.

I think it's hard to make a bright-line rule that requires medical attention when asked. They [the police] should already be asking for medical care in cases where it's warranted. Perhaps calling for more enforcement of this standard is a good place to start.

Unless you err on the side of caution and ask for medical assistance, but charge the person for the medical bills (and warn them they will be charged), then you will also have the problem of people requesting unneeded medical attention, and how many times do you have to listen and request when they're just calling wolf? Obviously not this case, but relevant if you're talking about legislation.

New rumors (which I believe are false) that Gray had a spinal fusion just over a week prior. I highly doubt that. Having assisted someone in recovery immediately after a spinal fusion, you can barely get out of bed to use the bathroom, much less move fluidly or even put on your shoes.

It's actually impressive the lengths they went to fabricate the rumor. Three different "news"/blog sources posted almost simultaneously. Even pulled settlement records from a car accident claim. Obviously, they forgot that there may, just possibly, be more than one Freddie Gray in Maryland...

That's funny, Merriam-Webster says "Thug" means "violent criminal".

The people referred to as Thugs were burning cars, breaking into private business, and stealing.

How dare we use a word exactly as it is intended...

@washingtonpost: Prisoner in police van said Freddie Gray was ‘banging against the walls’ during ride, document states http://t.co/TFjwhKTvaC

I'm gonna wager this won't go over well in Baltimore when it's used to exonerate the officers.

I do not know, how a person under their own power, could sever their own spine within the confines of a police wagon.

^ His family did live in a house with lead paint, which led to a settlement for the family providing monthly checks.

What I mean is, in a probably pretty confined space, how does someone propel themselves against the wall with such force to sever their spine? Given themselves a cut or bruise...sure. You could probably knock yourself out of you tried hard enough. But sever your spine?

It must be nice to be able to bribe someone to cover your asses. If that story was true, that would have been the first thing they said. No need to do a 2 week "investigation" if you have a witness saying he did it to himself.

No one on this planet has the mind control to slam their head into a wall hard enough to sever their own spine.

Our "justice system" is a damn joke.

from one of the greatest stand-up specials of all time, Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly:

Quote :
"That's that whole brutality thing." See, that's common knowledge then. See there was a time when only minorities really knew about that. I'm not gonna say white people didn't believe us, but you were a little skeptical. You were a little skeptical. I mean, I don't blame you. And then "Newsweek" printed it, and he knew it was true.
In the "Newsweek," White people are like:
"Oh my God.
Honey, did you see this?
Apparently, the police have been beating up Negros like hotcakes.
It's in the May issue."

I mean, really, how could you know, though? How could anyone else know?
You know, I mean, maybe you should've seen something a little suspicious. Don't you think it was, like, a little suspicious? A little suspicious, that every dead black person the police finds has crack sprinkled on them? I mean, come on now.
Come on, man. Who gets shot and sprinkles crack on themselves? Nobody would do that.
Bam! "Oh! oh!
I don't wanna leave no mysteries."

it's from 15 years ago and it's as relevant as ever

At a bare minimum, the cops involved should be charged with negligent homicide. No one has offered any plausible explanation, outside of the police 1) using excessive force, or 2) not securing him into the van properly for transport. Either of those is grounds for negligence at a minimum. Furthermore, whenever a cop kills a citizen and we don't have a clear picture of what happened, the burden of proof should be on the cop, as an agent of the gov't, to prove that he acted properly. Fuck this bullshit where the prosecution refuses to actually prosecute and cops get off with killing civilians. Prove that everything you did was necessary and proper, or else rot in jail. The guy you killed didn't get his trial, so you better explain why he didn't.

Yes there is a 0% chance that this guy gave himself a severed spine. 0%!

Demonic eyed black guy killed himself in the back of a police van instead of going to jail like he had done 10+ times in the past. YEA FUCKING RIGHT.

No offense but pretty easy to get witnesses if you offer deals in jail.

That being said I have seen more than. A hand fu of inmates beating their head against a concrete wall.

But I'm pretty sure the injury we see from that is bashed in forehead not severed spine.

Don't forget that the commissioner has already been quoted saying that Gray was unresponsive when the other guy was picked up....All they want to do is plant the seed of doubt. Lets say this guy was trying to hurt himself by slamming his head into the wall. Is anyone stupid enough to think he wouldn't crush his face in well before he severed his spine and crushed his own vocal box. Also did the guy that died from the same injuries 10 years ago also kill himself?

here are some thoughts about the police for you guys

police forces in the united states originated from slave patrols organized to return runaway slaves to their masters

the job of the police is now as it has always been: to protect the property of the state and that of the privileged private citizens in positions of power

police are and have always been the mechanic by which the state inflicts force and violence on its own populace for the purpose of protecting the interests of those in power from its own people

do not cooperate with police

do not talk to police

do not call the police

here are some bonus thoughts about peaceful protest for you fucking idiots:

the state has a vested interest in promoting the lie that the most effective forms of protest are peaceful and non-violent

you are taught about king and gandhi and encouraged to follow selective aspects of their example because it makes you easier to control and suppress

when you are being oppressed, you can and should destroy public property and defend yourself against the armed occupiers sent to silence you

burn the flag

smash the state

power is the means to enforce will by causing harm and killing

authority is power that is first given to the state by its people

but the state maintains and extends its authority by using the power given to it against those who gave it

those who give power should be prepared to take it back when necessary

where do you find the individual wills to exercise the state's power? in the fragile skulls of those who wield it against you

what is city hall? a building that burns like any other
