Yea I have a big problem with what was done to these people. They served their time. And at the same time in California, people who have had their three strikes penalties are getting commuted left and right.
But I certainly don't condone their manner of protest.
At the same time though, no buildings have burned, no stores have been looted... 1/3/2016 9:03:30 AM |

It completely pisses me off and frustrates me that we have to walk on eggshells around these ignorant criminals. My worst reaction would be a yawn if they were blown away tomorrow, but the Feds actually have to consider all the terrorists that might come out of the woodwork if they don't play the situation correctly. This "sovereign citizen" bullshit has gotten out of hand - time to open the FEMA death camps I guess

So, they took over an unoccupied, unlocked, and open to the public building. The news saying it was an armed takeover are just being sensational. At this point it is pretty much just a sit it.
The men were jailed to clearing invasive plant life and doing fire control. They served the time they were sentenced and then released.
Yet, the BLM has completed uncontrolled burns that have killed livestock and takes out people's homes, yet there was not even apologies or acknowledgement of wrong doing. 1/3/2016 10:14:24 AM |

They set fire to land that wasn't theirs to cover up poaching. They argued that 5 years for arson is cruel and unusual, the appeals courts disagreed, and now they need to serve their time.

Some ranchers made a fire that spread to BLM land. They also set a fire to destroy evidence of deer poaching. The federal government charged them with arson and managed to get a conviction. They were sentenced and served the sentenced issued initially. The sentence wasn't randomly lengthened. There's a five year mandatory minimum sentence for arson on federal land. The Hammonds argued against this, and the trial court agreed with them and imposed a mere year-long sentence, but then the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the federal law and demanded a five-year sentence be served.
http://www.justice.gov/usao-or/pr/eastern-oregon-ranchers-convicted-arson-resentenced-five-years-prison Bundy calls on his army from his protest to show up and help protest these ranchers going to jail.
http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2015/12/ranchers_fight_with_feds_spark.html
Here is more info about the arson: They deliberately started one fire to hide a slaughter of elk on federally-protected land and started another to protect animal feed during a burn ban. http://www.justice.gov/usao-or/pr/eastern-oregon-ranchers-convicted-arson-resentenced-five-years-prison
They flew their plane over the federal land in order to see where they wanted to burn, set multiple fires on several different occasions, burned a neighbor's property, set property on fire where they knew there were firefighters in the immediate vicinity and actually threatened a firefighter that they'd say he was the one who set the fires if he told law enforcement what they had done. These guys needed the book thrown at them. http://landrights.org/or/Hammond/Hammond_superseding-indictment%20May%2017%202012.pdf
also arrested in 1994 for threatening Fish & Wildlife workers and not allowing them to build a fence around an irrigation canal in order to protect it from being destroyed by their cattle, and issued death threats to the refuge managers three times. http://www.hcn.org/issues/20/582

Funny, I've not said anything about sovereign citizens.
From the flawed perspective that the .gov is always right, then yes, they are in the wrong. From the perspective of following the constitution, the .gov is not on solid ground.
Seems to me if BLM is constantly getting into legal battles with ranchers that have held family land for 100+ years! then there is a problem. It reeks of issues like the IRS.

^^^ in many cases it was the farmers land, but the .gov used eminent domain to take the land. Then the gov would try to lease it back to them to maintain the use that was already there. Then the gov will bloc the natural water ways for 'conservation' though they had been used for hundreds of years.
Current legal battle ongoing in Texas over just this issue.

I too would like to know what punishment maxomadrivr wants to see.
They had 2 weeks to explain their side to a jury of their peers, and were convicted (for a second time). I'm thinking there's more to this than the government took their land. I would even be sympathetic to this grievance had they remained peaceful like occupy wall street or blacklivesmatter.
But they aren't justified seizing public property by force, demanding to only be accountable to their own brand of shariah law, and stating they're willing to kill and die for their own type of caliphate.
This incident is a great lesson for how to fight ISIS though, we are seeing first hand how easy it is for people to be radicalized, and how a diseased ideology can spread amongst seemingly normal people. Hopefully the pentagon is taking notes. 1/3/2016 11:46:48 AM |

Not my job to determine their 'punishment'. Based on the other protest groups history, and wanting to be fair and equal, then they should have trespass charges, of which most will be dismissed. 1/3/2016 11:52:16 AM |
