Page 3...hundred Mbps!
I switched to AT&T 300 fiber. I guess I wasn't expecting the speeds to fluctuate as much as they do, but oh well. So far...meh. It's as good as any other ISP at this point.

Anyone in Cary get Gigapower yet? I got an email a while back saying it was available. Went to website--nothing. Also been seeing it as an ad on Xbone home screen.
Spoke to some installers on my street, they had no idea, apart from MDUs. 3/22/2017 3:00:14 PM |

dtownral do they still have the 1 TB/mo cap unless you pay $30?
Some Town of Cary guys were spraying markers yesterday morning. They said AT&T and/or Google would be digging outside our houses in the next couple weeks (they've both already worked on adjacent main roads). Lo and behold, later there was a Gigapower hang tag on my door! Still holding out hope for Google, as the reps in their mobile promo trailer said they'd be announcing the next signup area by the end of March. But depending on uncapped cost, I'll probably at least take the 300 Mbps tier from ATT in the meantime.
I am curious though. ATT only recently discontinued their invasive DPI method to track customers and sell their info. However, that was under previous FCC, which opposed the practice. Now with Senate already voting to allow ISPs to do this, how soon before AT&T resumes the policy?

The 300 plan has a 1TB limit, are you really using that much? I stream a ton and download from usenets and I'm not close to 1 TB. Their gigabit is unlimited 3/24/2017 5:23:51 AM |

I can go through 1 TB in like 2 weeks if I am at the house a lot and not busy. Was happy to see they removed the cap from Gigapower users for sure before I got service haha. 3/24/2017 3:11:06 PM |

feels good to have symmetric speeds at home.
Can get 940Mbps on a wired. Get about 400Mbps on AC wifi. 14ms pings using ATT's speed test.

what do you think gigabit pricing will do over the next few years?
i'm leaning towards the 300 plan because that is plenty for my current needs, but its tempting to get the lifetime lock on the gigabit plan price if google fizzles out and never challenges at&t and then maybe prices rise 3/24/2017 4:00:56 PM |
moron All American 34142 Posts user info edit post |
I considered the 300 and that would be fine for me. Most of the "slowness" of the internet isn't in raw throughout but latency and upload capacity. So a symmetric 300 would feel just as fast for just about everything but torrents. I'm just gluttonous and want more.
But I'm in the zone for google fiber within the next year so I can't see ATT having much leverage to raise prices for me. 3/24/2017 5:52:11 PM |

My biggest issue with Gigapower was the fact it went out for 3 days straight, and I always got told a few hours to fix it. Luckily it was over the weekend, and I didn't miss work...but it sucked not being able to stream netflix.
However, I'm paying $55 for 200Mbps right now..so I might look back to switching. 3/27/2017 8:46:32 AM |

dtownral I use around 1 TB/mo right now. Mix of video, Xbone downloads (I'm always trying out demos/betas), and have a Plex share for family and friends.
I could see myself using a lot more with Gb access, as I'd like to use more cloud services. I take pics in RAW and would pay for ACD if I could upload pics faster. I use Backblaze right now, but only do a partial backup since my upload is so slow. I'd like to do full file and system (.iso) backups to the cloud. That would quickly rise above 1 TB.
Thanks for the info though. I'll definitely be getting the 1,000 now. Might see if a neighbor wants to go in on it. I'd be happy enough with 500 and it would hopefully make it more difficult for AT&T to build a profile of us to sell, given the impending rules.
I can't wait though. Lately I've been getting terrible lag on Xbox Live, and my upload was dropped (without warning) from 20 Mbps to 10. My max download speeds on Xbox are now 30 Mbps on wireless, vs 65-70 before. All of this since the TWC buyout.

ibnuts Veteran 487 Posts user info edit post |
^^^I'll definitely switch to/choose Google when it's available, even if it's more. Just to support them since the only reason Gigapower announced for this area was to compete with Google. But so far I've only seen AT&T marking flags and work starting in my neighborhood. I imagine it will be a while before Google gets here, as they seem to be focusing on higher end areas (I know it's in Kitts Creek, Brier Creek, Breckenridge, and North Hills). Even if I was locked into AT&T, I'd at least pay the install fee for Google, so as to not screw over whoever owns this house next.
^^Oh, and I know Kitts Creek has access to both. Not sure, but I think parts of North Hills do also.

i can not figure out their shitty router. i think i have port forwarding figured out (its tedious to setup), but can not get sonarr to work
for whatever reason if i i go to "publicIPV4addressforthecomputer:port" from the computer it will not load, but I can access the port from outside the network. If I try to access localnetworkIP:port from another device on the network it doesn't load
i'm not sure if i can still use my own router with this thing 4/8/2017 2:23:10 PM |

You can't really use your own router with ATT, I just relegated my personal router as an access point that also serves up a USB drive*. Although I haven't tried cloning the ATT router WAN MAC to see if it's just a static dhcp registration ATT is doing.
But you should be able to set up the firewall/port forwarding/dmz to work with any application.
* this actually works really well because now I have 2 5Ghz wireless networks, one that's AC and one that's just N, and this seems to give me better wireless speeds (500-600Mbps on AC 150Mbps on N), I've disabled 2.4Ghz network. 4/8/2017 5:25:07 PM |

i have port forwarding setup, i can go to a port checking website and confirm they are all open, but sonarr still doesn't work remotely. nevermind, it works now. weird, but okay.
there is also something weird going on where i can't access publicip:port from on the network
i even tried just removing the desktop from the router firewall and relying on windows firewall, but the router doesn't let you do that
i'm using my old router as a wifi repeater to extend wifi to the back patio where it was previously weak, but a seperate N and AC network sounds neat

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30228946-reroute-public-IP-s-to-router
I found this, and they're claiming ATT actually allots you multiple public IPs and you just have to configure the Cascaded Router section to use them, which once is done, should allow you to enable the features in your regular router that would loopback public IP requests back to your router.
Might be worth giving that a shot. 4/9/2017 2:05:10 AM |

Is there any way to see where Google has and hasn't dug? I know AT&T fiber is at my house (five pts) but I'd like to know if Google will be coming soon as I shop.
Also, for those that switched to AT&T, did you have installation charges, etc? I guess I'd be stuck using their wireless router and relegating mine to an AP? (not that big of a deal as I'd have to upgrade from my rt-n66u to benefit from the speeds anyway) 4/25/2017 12:08:26 PM |
