^I saw an ABC news article on facebook about it, but I haven't heard about it on TV either. It sounds like it was one of those deals where the photo went viral on the internet and a lot of comments were made about it on facebook and twitter including people threatening to kill the girl. Outside of that it really isn't much of a news story.

Yes, exactly. There are many, many dumbasses on both sides. However, there are adults in the room on the pro-gun side who deeply understand the intricacies of the issues. There is, for practical purposes, a total vacuum on the opposing side. There are adults in that room who genuinely want progress while respecting 2A rights, but only a vanishingly small minority of them have a useful amount of knowledge of firearms and gun policy. This could be a thread in and of itself, but this breeds contempt and extreme distrust from the pro-gun side, and as a result, coupled with the lack of knowledge and therefore capability to effectively generate well-conceived proposals from the gun-control side to begin with, makes the dialog surrounding this issue unhealthy and wholly unproductive.
