finally saw it
very good and tense. had heard some people found the time jumps hard to follow but i thought they delineated the jumps fairly well. Maybe thats bc i knew to watch out for it though. 1/31/2018 11:28:08 PM |

God does nolan know how to shoot a movie but they're all so damn antiseptic.
Kind of similar to how I feel about James Cameron in a certain respect. He's one of the greatest technical filmmakers of all time but god is he such a hamfisted storyteller. 2/1/2018 10:07:34 AM |

I always thought Nolan did very well with the Batman series.
Dunkirk wasn't bad either. He always cast well. 2/1/2018 10:29:40 AM |

^They are absolutely well made and put together, and look beautiful.
But from a storytelling and character relationship standpoint there's just not a lot of feeling or emotion there. You could argue its a stylistic choice but its so subdued to about make the whole thing feel pointless. 2/1/2018 10:37:05 AM |

That's the benefit of having a trilogy for him, he can take three movies to get us to know Batman on a personal level.
I agree there wasn't much character development in Dunkirk, but then again, there didn't really need to be. 2/1/2018 11:14:34 AM |

Maybe, I could see that. You could even say the Nazis are the main character. I don't think that it's Hardy though he seems central to the entire plot. 2/2/2018 2:47:14 PM |

I mean what is it about this one guy that gives people a hard on? Is it that he directed the Batman? Can you name any other modern directors that you like? Please let me know. I still really just don't get it. Like he the only dude making interesting movies which ain't true.

Alfonso Cuaron is also pretty good. I thought Gravity was a misstep for his style. Anyway, all the of the above are better directors than Nolan because they don't entirely rely on narrative misdirection. 2/4/2018 11:19:54 PM |

Just saw dunkirk and I guess Hans Zimmer deserves whatever awards he got for the sound gimmicks because it made an uneventful movie suspenseful. The movie was beautifully shot but other than that and the sound, it had nothing to offer really.
I already studied shepherds tone so I appreciated and knew about it but didn't let the sound fool me into being on the edge of my seat. You knew the planes were coming but there was no reason to care about the characters being blown up.
A war movie with no real battles or characters to feel attached to. The boy we didn't know died trying to hlep and the soldier we didn't know had to deal with the guilt of killing him. People we didn't know took the soldiers home. The end. 3/10/2018 3:12:11 AM |

I was really let down by this movie. It was like we were just watching the event from a drone with zero direction, story, or characters to be invested in.

Really? I thought it had very good character development. Especially with Tom Hardy as the pilot. He was all about the mission, not the glory or anything else. Pretty much captured the mindset of all parties involved in the dunkirk evacuation, from every point of view. It took me the entire movie to absorb the story but afterwards it was like a big realization for me.4/1/2018 1:21:51 AM |

In war there isn't a hero or villain or even characters. (OH BOY I'D BE VIN DIESEL AND SHHIT ON YOU MERICA). You die and shit. However, I would still know what time it was when I was getting shitted on. Tom Hardy saved me in the past now I'm alive doesn't work when you are a character in a movie getting shitted on. 6/29/2018 12:13:30 AM |
