put another 50k in after the big dip. I'm up ~8% so far. thinking about realizing some of these gains and moving into private equity/consulting on a small scale. Anyone done any business purchases from brokers or otherwise? 2/19/2018 6:19:21 PM |

Purchased at $35.85. Closed at $37.58 today. I just sold Jun $40 calls at $0.80 each. Pushing it out that far lets me capture the next dividend as well, so if it doesn't get called away I pocket a total of $2.30 for an annualized return of almost 20%. If it does get called away my return is $6.45.2/26/2018 4:20:30 PM |

I check the market several times a day. With my aggressive stance, it is tough to see a $10-20K swing downward in a day or in repeated days, but most of the time, it comes right back up. Most of the stocks are trading on news and not fundamentals, so you just need a tough stomach to not panic. 3/23/2018 11:28:55 AM |

if you're never going to have $50k invested, you're wasting your time. hell, even that's a pretty paltry sum in terms of a goal. Like, if that's your goal, why even bother? what're you gonna do with $50k?
the good news is that it's easy to far, far eclipse that sum...by at least an order of magnitude, and two orders of magnitude (or certainly approaching it--closer to that than 1 OOM) is attainable for many people if they save aggressively enough.
this really raises the question, what is your goal? What are you saving and investing for? how much do you need for that, and when?
i'm prob down a 5-figure sum this week. Nowhere near 50k. i'm 38, and have never earned more than a military salary (even my engineering job was the same $ or less as I made in the USMC...so, good money, but certainly nothing crazy. New job is considerably more per day, but only part time). Point is, I probably had $50k saved up by the time I was about 27, when I was making $50-60k or something. It sounds like a lot until you get there...then pretty soon you can gain or lose that much in a big market swing...then pretty soon, well, you get the idea.
You will never, ever get there if you're just saving whatever extra you have, though. There will never be enough extra. Figure out how much you need to be saving, have it automatically drafted out of your pay or checking account every month, and let it go like clockwork if you possibly can.

^^I save aggressively but invest hesitantly. The goal right now for my wife and I is to get to somewhere between 80-100k for a down payment on a house 3-5 years from now. We're roughly around 50k right now and will definitely be where we need to be.
My wife doesn't want anything to do with stocks so it's just been me giving investing a couple of hundred a month (up to $8500 now). I was up nearly 12% overall before the big drop in January, made it all back, and now after this past week my gains are down to just +1%.
I've also put just about 10k in a retirement fund over the past few years but I've been scared to check the status. 3/26/2018 4:03:35 AM |

^ a bit off of the thread's topic now but you should be able to show your wife pretty clearly the gains you are getting which will lead to getting to a goal higher - of course there is risk though
hopefully you aren't referring to 10k as your total retirement savings and you mean that you have put 10k/yr for the past few years 3/26/2018 2:10:30 PM |

Are people referring to what's in their Etrade accounts when they're talking about investments, or are 401K and IRA accounts included also? I've always assumed the latter, but I assumed bdmazur may have been talking about the former.3/26/2018 6:29:52 PM |

I'm more like 98% IRA / 2% non-IRA, so evaluating daily fluctuations seems kind of trivial when I'm 25 years away from touching most of it. last week was too brutal not to take notice though. 3/27/2018 12:23:02 AM |

I was counting them separate. I use the Stash app for my investments, and I only put in what is leftover at the end of each month after all other bills and monthly living expenses are covered.

you already have $50k saved (i assume just sitting in some kind of low-yield savings/checking account?) but you don't want to to buy a house until you save another $30k-$50k in a few years? rates are rising, why not buy now? you can already afford to put 20% down on a pretty nice house, are you just hoping the market crashes and waiting till then to buy? if that takes 5 years (the higher end of your estimate), are you okay giving 5 years of rent money away instead of building equity in a home (less financing costs)?3/27/2018 10:39:00 AM |

Not in Santa Barbara, 20% down on the AVERAGE house would be $200k. Move over one town into Goleta and a 20% down payment goes down to $160k. We can only afford to live here as it is because of student housing being half the rent of the rest of the city.
My wife is finishing her PhD in the next year or two and then we'll be looking to buy wherever we end up after that. In the meantime, I'd like to get to $100k saved if we can. Right now we have 35k in a 2% CD, she has 10k in personal savings and I have 8k in investments (was at $8700 before last week )3/29/2018 2:28:16 PM |

Biggest holding ($225K) is Amazon and lots in FAANG stocks. His attacking AMZN is ludicrous as they do pay taxes on anything they sell and they pay the same rate as any bulk shipper with USPS. I personally think AMZN is propping up the USPS from insolvency and his consistent tweeting about a company sent the stock down 3-5% daily for a week straight. Don’t want to sell on news/garbage trash talk, but hard to watch it fall $35K+ in a week with no fundamental shift behind it. 4/4/2018 7:12:29 PM |

^^^^ He is fucking loathsome regardless of his impact on the markets, but strictly from an investor's perspective, we had a hell of a run-up due to hopes and dreams of what he (and the Congressional GOP) might do, but everything of consequence that he's actually done has fucked things up from a market perspective.
-tax cut caused a pull back, due to it being ill-timed and likely to cause the Fed to raise rates more -3x he's moved on trade protectionism, with the market taking it in the face all 3x -immigration policy proposals don't help -bad mouthing AMZN and other companies

Historically, they've done great. Up 65-85% over the past 18-24 months as a result of them, but my memory is short term and after I've had the increase for a while, I don't see it as profit, but my base and now he's fucking with the new profit. I also put $300K+ into the market in February, which may have been ill timed. Looking at futures today though, I should be getting within 3-4% of my all time high. Now with more money in the market, little movements in percentages equal big movements with money. After 5-10 days of getting slaughtered, it makes you weary. 4/5/2018 8:36:53 AM |
