The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Tornado Watch for portions of

southeast Maryland
northern North Carolina
central and eastern Virginia
coastal waters

Effective this Monday afternoon and evening from 250 PM until
1000 PM EDT.

Tornadoes...hail to 2 inches in diameter...thunderstorm wind
gusts to 70 mph...and dangerous lightning are possible in these
areas.

The Tornado Watch area is approximately along and 85 statute
miles north and south of a line from 20 miles west of Danville
Virginia to 50 miles southeast of Patuxent River Maryland. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou8).

Remember...a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for
tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings.

Discussion...thunderstorms are forecast to intensify this afternoon
over northern NC and central VA...ahead of approaching surface low.
Activity will spread northeastward across the watch area posing a
risk of large hail and damaging winds. Enhanced forcing near the
warm front may also pose a risk of a few tornadoes this afternoon
and early evening.

Aviation...tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail
surface and aloft to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface
wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to
450. Mean storm motion vector 24030.

It's going to rain for like 10 minutes and then disappear.

It's a thin, strong line of thunderstorms that's moving at a decent pace.

Just enough rain to make it humid and shitty outside for when the sun comes out.

from my company's full-time meteorologist:

Quote :
"There is currently a line of scattered showers and possibly isolated storms in the Piedmont region of NC. These showers will continue to move eastward into central NC this afternoon. A threat for severe weather may occur this afternoon into the early evening across central NC, with the greatest threat along and east of US 1. The main threat from these storms will be large hail and gusty winds (up to 35mph gusts). More scattered showers and storms are expected to develop again tomorrow afternoon, as a cold front will stall out to the north and northwest of the area. This rain looks to last through Sunday, with the best chances Sunday morning. The best chance for any severe weather with this system will come to the north and west of Raleigh. "

I'm in the energy trading industry. Buying and selling power relies heavily on weather conditions in various parts of the country, extreme hot, extreme cold, etc. It's a driving force in prices, among other things. So we employ a full-time meteorologist in our Indy office, and another one down here in our Cary office.

Yeah, I was just thinking maybe I could take his job.

Based on that weather report, at least.

But you're not hiring.

Our meteorologist actually graduated from NCSU a little over a year ago. He started interning in this office when he had a year left, he'd come in on breaks and stuff. Then they decided to hire him for this office full-time.

In fact, I'm betting he's on here somewhere.

Hi Seabreeze!!!!! (We call him Seabreeze, everyone has a nickname, don't ask me why his is Seabreeze.)

aha!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_breeze

Quote :
"A sea-breeze (or onshore breeze) is a wind from the sea that develops over land near coasts. It is formed by increasing temperature differences between the land and water which create a pressure minimum over the land due to its relative warmth and forces higher pressure, cooler air from the sea to move inland. Generally, air temperature gets cooler relative to nearby locations as one moves closer to a large body of water."
