Crap, I'll be in my Arabic class tomorrow during the market open. Guess I won't be able to get in on it as soon as I had hoped...
10-10:15 I'm between classes. Maybe I can get Scottrade to help me out.

I use Schwab and it's not terrible, not the cheapest but pretty high quality info/research. Unfortunately, by law I am only allowed to trade with 3 brokers

I use scottrade as well. I don't have any complaints, and I'm pretty sure 7$ trades are the cheapest around

Damn, I wish I had read this thread BEFORE I opened my E*Trade account. The time it takes to transfer money is ridiculous, not to mention, I'm paying $6 extra per trade when the money finally shows up in my account.

1: Go to gas station, buy a shit ton of gasoline.
2: Wait 1 month, sell on the street for current retail price...which will probably be 2x what you bought it for.

Really though, I have no idea. I'm still all about V.

Well, signed up today and made my first deposit. I'm very happy with the turnaround time (I bank with Wacovia, btw). I went by their office during my lunch break and talked to a guy there, very professional and knowledgable (as far as I could tell). I should've got somebody's name as a referral so you coulda had some free trades.

Bought some RIMM, BP, International Rectifier (work w/ em), and Hyundai.

OK I want to open up a roth ira but I want one roth account under my brokerage, and I want the other under a mutual fund company. Reason behind this is so that any trades into the mutual fund are free when done directly.

Is there a special account or an easy way to send money back and forth between the two roth accounts and not get hit w/ taxes/penalties for removal? Or do I have to ACAT (account transfer) when I want to move money from the fund to the brokerage roth?

Can I just electronically move money from one roth to the other without taking a hit?

hard to tell.

if oil rolls over it may take all the energy names for a dip. maybe then is a good time.

i'm hoping oil drops below 120 in one of these corrections that last several days -- i can then get long dated calls on some energy names.

however, hope is not a viable investment thesis

nothing really jumped out at me, either, but Motley Fool has recommended it twice in the last 3 months, i believe. Most of my stocks I've picked on my own--and generally done pretty well--but I've learned to be careful betting against those guys, and for them to be THAT confident and on fire about it means something.

so, to be perfectly honest, i did something i don't like to do and simply bought on someone else's tip. it was down 2% today. I wanted to buy in on SOMETHING with today's pullback, and was busy flying and didn't have time to research or think much.

i love alternative energy - it is what got me interested in stocks in the first place - but i would not touch FSLR. yeah it's down, but it is still has a P/E over 100...that is just ridiculous, i don't care how much of a competitive advantage they supposedly have. especially in an industry that is so speculative. solar in particular scares me with how inflated it is right now.

if you like alt energy for long term, pick an ETF that covers all your bases. my favorite is PBD because of its international exposure and limited exposure to solar (a lot of wind energy companies that are BIG overseas). PBW spreads the wealth out quite a bit too. GEX is ok, but a little top heavy for my taste.

also you can go backdoor green with Chevron (world's largest geothermal producer), GE, and my favorite...Waste Management. WMI is basically the only game in town for trash removal...plus also a leader in recycling and its landfill methane gas-to-energy program is becoming profitable. And with a P/E in the mid-teens, the price is right.
