i've heard quite a bit of their stuff on SiriusXM. On paper, this should be right up my alley and I should totally dig it. But each time i hear it, it's just average and forgettable

I haven't been too thrilled with the summer of 09, just hasn't been my style. I seem to always enjoy the "winter music" more

I, too, plan on going to the The XX show.... I'm playing the fuck out that album and I owe it to this thread for one.

Still haven't got around to Yacht, which someone else recommended.

I'm loving 2009 so far --- not the volume of great material that we saw in 2008, but the albums I have enjoyed, I've really loved. (Grizzly Bear, Megafaun, White Rabbits, Jason Lytle, Camera Obscura, The XX, etc)

Now I just need Midlake to leak this year, god damnit.

^ I actually meant "not the volume of 2007", sorry.

I thought 2007 was the best year in recent memory (and 2005 before that). Seems like we're on an odd year cycle, lol.

New Shadows Fall is pretty badass. Usually takes me a few listens to get into an album but I already like it after one listen.

New Pelican song premiered on stereogum.

http://stereogum.com/archives/mp3/new-pelican-an-inch-above-sand-stereogum-premiere_090271.html

I'm looking forward to the new album. It comes out the same time as the new BTBAM and the new Converge, I think. October should be a rad month for releases.

^^

I was just thinking the same thing recently because the new The Red Chord album comes out the same day. Wasn't a fan of the last album, but the few teaser things I have heard from the new one sound promising...

BTBAM, Pelican, Converge, The Red Chord all coming out on the same day...thats going to keep me busy for awhile.

Smashing Pumpkins new album contains 44 songs and it's free

http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/pages/news/announcement-from-billy-corgan-about-new-smashing-pumpkins-album

Quote :
"I'm happy to finally announce the plans for the new Smashing Pumpkins album.

Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope'. The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.

We will however sell highly limited edition EP's (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EP's will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EP's will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EP's will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal cd single. We may also offer other variations for sale, say for example a digital single with a demo version of a song. The commitment that is most important is the one I'm making to you: that the music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' will be available for free to everyone. All 44 songs: free for ALL.

When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EP's need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces.

The story of the album is based on 'The Fool's Journey', as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic.

The music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.

I already have 53 songs written for the record, so I am quite confident that I already have much of the material that I would need to undertake such an extensive project. I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new Smashing Pumpkins music to you in a unique and exciting way"

i went to one of the billy corgan shows back on august 30th. while i'll admit that i'm a big fan (the people there were all pretty hardcore), i can also admit that some of the stuff he was playing on the anniversary tour, and some of those songs on the 2 EPs were..... not the best. that being said, i really enjoyed the stuff he played live. i only knew 1 song that he played, but they still sounded good. it was a very full sound (included keyboards, backup vocals, a violinist and 2 percussionists), and not completely cheesy like the zwan record.
(the show i was at http://www.archive.org/details/BillyCorgan2009-08-30.BillyCorgan2009-08-30 )

so yeah, at the very least i'll download the songs, but more realistically, i'm gonna buy them all on whatever physical media i think sounds best/coolest.

^ I found one last night that wasn't labeled right, but I think this one is.

Good sound quality too -- it's up on bolachas, and this is the same copy, just in mediafire (i think)

Also, no shit, but 5 songs in and it's already way up on my best albums list for this year. I think this is what was really supposed to happen when the Traveling Wilbury's were formed, lol.

Seriously, this is fucking great!

Also, the new Do Make Say Think album is out there if people are interested in that.

So... the new flaming lips album sounds pretty good to me. A few of the tracks aren't quite driven enough for my tastes, but I'll still be downloading it, and I have a feeling some of them will grow on me after some more listens.

(Note: The whole album is currently available streaming from http://www.colbertnation.com/, if anyone here didn't know already.)

Not nearly as terrible as the last one, but not nearly as good as the first one. I'll give it another listen in a week or so.

one song has limited use of autotune. it's not like they went "discovery" on us. that said, i could do without "heartbeat".
