because they require us to log onto the network using this program called clean access, in addition to having mcafee AV. well neither clean access nor mcafee are compatible, and they of course have no timetable for making the shit compatible.

so right now i've got no antivirus because windows 7 made me uninstall it

Upgrading from 7100 to ultimate from technet. Will see how it goes because the previous install has been 99% flawless since July.

that would not be Windows 7 being incompatible with your wifi, that would be clean access & mcafee being incompatible with Windows 7. that explains a lot.

^^ considereing it was a prerelease OS and I was trying to use a 7+ yr old tv tuner card that hasn't been supported by the manufacturer in a few years, it was perfect outside of that.

so if I do a dual boot, I'm thinking I'll do 4 partitions (2 for OSs, 1 for files, 1 for programs). How can I get everything, from both OSs, to point to the proper partition (so files from either OS go to the files partition and programs run from the programs partition)? I've been googling (and I'm new to dual booting) but haven't found anything.

not sure about you being able to do lots of partitions for different versions of Windows, because Windows expects to run from the last partition on your drive. you can probably do a separate partition for files, but most windows dual booting comes in the form of multiple versions installed on the same partition. what you described works better with entirely different OSs, like linux and windows.

the 2 partitions for OSes and 1 for files is not a problem.

I'm not sure that you could have one partition for programs that are installed in two separate OSes. You'd have to install the programs in each OS to the same location and I'm just not sure it would work. You could always try. Depending on the OS and the software though, the install folder may be different for different OSes, especially if one os is 32bit and one is 64bit and the software has 32 and 64 bit versions.

Typically you'll have a partition for each OS and the programs for that OS are installed on its partition. Then you can save all your files to a data partition so that you can wipe the OS partition without having to worry about backing stuff up off it beforehand.

Need some help. Installed 7 home pro tonight. I have an ext with everything from my old setup. The programs do not seem to be there now though - when I go to the folder on the external they show as shortcuts, not the files.

I HAD Microsoft Office on XP, now I do not obviously. How can I get this back? I'm okay with d/loading all of my old programs that are free....

Also, before and after the install it appears my HD has right about the same free memory. I was under the impression this would be a lot less since all of my programs should have been deleted with the install?

Am I missing something?

When given the choice of upgrade or custom, I chose custom per the instructions I printed from the "upgrading from windows XP to Windows 7" link on Windows site.

Well thats what really pisses me off, the instructions also say if you dont have enough memory to install to delete that. I did not, so its deleted... I realize I cant get that folder back, but I didnt think I would have this issue (had I been able to install it would not have been deleted).

you don't save all your programs with custom install, you will have to reinstall them. in-place upgrade would have kept everything in place but requires going to the same version or ultimate.

Okay, yeah I am okay with that... still a few things I dont understand. How am i going to get M$ Office back when it came on my computer (no discs) and what about the programs I paid for like security/anti-virus?

Why are the programs not showing up on my external hard drive like they were, now they are shortcuts?

Why is my HD as big as it was prior to 7.... seems like with so much missing (programs) it would be smaller.

i'll let others answer the questions about free space and office and so forth. i just wanted to add that you probably can either contact the manufacturer of your AV software, or you could just go with one of the several excellent free ones out there now. microsoft's got their own "Security Essentials" now, so there's not really much need to buy AV anymore.

thanks, I'll try that. In the end, what matters is that both OSs point towards the same documents/files.

everything I've read says put OSs on two different partitions... I'm going to try Vista x86 and W7 64 for a while. Once I confirm that W7 is up to par and I have no compatibility issues, I'll probably just stick with W7

yes, on a laptop. 2 HDDs is doable, but I don't have another HDD and I don't want to have to keep up with another HDD. Not to mention, that would require me keeping a portable HDD at all times.

super easy to do in win7, almost as easy in vista

but why do you want vista and win7? are you worried about compatibility?

^yeh, since I'll be running Vista x86 and W7 x64. I've been told that there shouldn't be any program compatibility issues, but before I completely switch over, I'd like to keep a x86 OS just in case there are any issues (I run some in-house made programs, of which I'm not sure if they'll run in W7 and/or x64.

so what about having each OS point towards the same files? just change the target location in my documents, etc?

That would work but here's some advice.

Make sure the Win7 partition is FIRST on the disk and the Vista partition is second. This way, when you decide to get rid of vista and want to expand your win7 partition to fill the entire disk, you're not fucked.

If I were you though I'd try with Win7 only and then if something doesn't work (everything should work, 32 bit or not, at least when run in "compatibility mode" for vista or xp or whatever) install vista on a separate partition or as a VM.

I'd just run VM's for Vista/XP/whatever else inside of Win7. Hella lot easier (and more useful) than multi-booting.

I believe Win7 Ultimate comes with VirtualPC on the machine (that XP VM runs on it, but you can run anything else as well).

if you have pro or ultimate you can download a copy of virtual PC and an XP VM from microsoft. (google windows 7 xp mode). Its kinda cool cause after you install an app inside the vm, you can run it by itself outside the vm as if it were in windows 7. The same way you run apps in paralells and vmware fusion in osx.

^i know on a Mac only direct X 7 was supported but the new VMware Fusion that just came out now supports up to direct x 9 so that in itself is a hindering factor regardless of performance.

not in virtual pc afaik, but i dont know why you'd want to seeing as how it would run in windows 7 anyhow.

http://gizmodo.com/5390991/over-80-of-you-had-a-smooth-windows-7-install-experience

Quote :
"Given Microsoft's rocky past with installs, I expected a lot of negative responses to yesterday's question about your Windows 7 experience. However, over 80% of you encountered little or no problems with your install.

In fact, 67% of respondents claimed that their install experience was "excellent". After skimming over some of your comments I was truly surprised at how many times I came across words like "great" and "flawless". I also noticed that the majority of issues people were having stemmed from hardware manufacturers that have been slow to update drivers—not Microsoft.

All-in-all, this is a very encouraging sign—Microsoft really seems to have their shit together on this one. Still, if you are having problems, make sure to consult our Windows 7 coverage for some tips and tricks."

I didn't vote there, but I had an entirely smooth install at my Windows7 party (which was really just having friends over).

So, out of curiosity I waited to install it until my friends got to my place. I was attempting to use the logic that: when under pressure and in front of a group of people, Microsoft software will do its best to fail and embarrass. Granted, I've been using Windows7 for a while now and feel good recommending it, but I thought I'd give it the chance to fail or impress

Anyway, it was installed at at the login screen in under 20 minutes, on a machine that is 3 years old. Pretty damn good.

Good job Microsoft, proud to support you.
