So I missed the two tappings of Pliny the Younger at Fallingrock as I was out of town both weekends, fortunately there's another tapping at FreshCraft, so I'm headed to that one tonight. 2/28/2011 11:08:40 AM |

I think i've only had one barley wine ever and it was nasty. I need to try some more and have specifically wanted to try bigfoot.
Talk about a beer that is detrimental to a diet though. 2/28/2011 1:11:42 PM |

Finally, I can check off Pliny the Younger!
Amazing beer. Pliny the Elder, but much more refined, smoother, a bit maltier, much clearer (no floaties like PtE, incredible floral and piney nose, beautiful shiny copper color, just an amazing beer. Glad I got to try it. 2/28/2011 8:43:35 PM |

Yup. Garlic chile glazed chicken wings mixed with sesame. They were awesome. I know it's not the best picture, but that was the best picture my cell phone could take in the place. 3/1/2011 9:50:28 AM |

have a chance for some younger on sunday -- i think i might brave the chaos because there will also be supplication on tap (and a bunch of other rr brews but i can get those anytime), we'll see how it goes... 3/4/2011 8:13:28 PM |

sorry for the double post but i scored some younger -- yay! delicious and hoppy as ever, and finally a wonderful, calm way of getting it (i overpaid for it a bit, but the local beer bar pre-sold tickets around noon so i could enjoy my lunch and other beers without worrying if i'd get a pour later)
no supplication (email misprint or something) but had some consecration and sanctification to feed my sour tooth (both excellent, i'm sure i've had them in the past but have a hard time remembering my rr -tions) -- i actually preferred the sanctification, the consecration is much higher alcohol and though i didn't taste it directly, i think it mutes the flavors a bit
finished up with an elder and i'm now having a lagunitas hop stoopid for more sunday funday -- good times
also picked up some stone og's (regular and belgo) from bevmo yesterday (went for 5 cent wine sale but always end up w/ beers too) -- discovered i have 2009 and 2010 og's still hanging around so i'll probably do a vertical tasting with some friends since it's impossible to me to drink those by myself, don't really know what to expect for the belgo, might try to find it on tap somewhere as well... 3/6/2011 6:41:42 PM |

yeah supplication has always been my favorite rr sour, but I really enjoyed sanctification (& consecration) - probably need to try them side by side again (though i've done that before at rr in santa rosa), really they're just all really good, have a hard time remembering the sours v. other belgian ales (damnation is eh but readily available, tasted redemption today which was ok too) 3/6/2011 8:08:30 PM |

This past Saturday, I got to try 2 amazing beers. The first was a Belgian Tripel called Gulden Draak (tap). Really great flavor that hid the 10+% alcohol content. I had 2 of these and was definitely feeling it.
The other was Kulmbacher Reichelbrau Eisbock (bottle), which uses a really interesting brewing technique of freezing and removing a portion of the water during the process to get a more concentrated flavor. A very delicious, dark, and fairly thick beer.
I highly recommend both beers for those who like the darker (and somewhat sweeter) heavier brews. 3/7/2011 11:20:16 AM |

I have never seen the draak on tap, only in bottle (and I've had a couple of them that way)- if I'm in the mood for a belgian, that is not a bad one to have 3/7/2011 11:28:13 AM |

Yeah, this was the first time I had seen it on tap. I had it at a place called Duckworth's Grill in Mooresville, NC while visiting the in-laws. It was pretty cheap too (by Belgian standards) at only $4.50/glass.
I had the Eisbock at The Salty Caper, right down the street from Duckworth's. That, and a draft glass of the beer that started me on my path to drinking great beers... Maredsous 8. It was a good night. 3/7/2011 11:33:56 AM |

NORTH CAROLINA IS GETTING NO FUCKING KBS THIS YEAR. NOT A DROP. WHAT A LOAD OF FUCKING HORSE SHIT.
Apparently the distributor told them that stock was low this year and NC was being left out. 3/7/2011 1:47:48 PM |

Just had some Stone Old Guardian Barleywine and it was maybe 5/10 at best. Too much like liquorish, alcohol was too apparant, too sweet, just not quite right. Also had the Grand Teton Pursuit of Hoppiness which was excellent, a nice medium-light body, great full red flavor, well balanced between the malts & hops and the alcohol wasn't apparant at all, which is great for a 8% Imperial Red. 3/9/2011 9:16:03 PM |

had a few things last night...
New Belgium Dunkel - sweeter than a european dunkel which are already sweet, but still true to form. I enjoyed it.
New Belgium Le Terroir - A sour beer barrel-aged for two years and then dry-hopped with Amarillo and Cascade hops for 8 days. I enjoy sour beers and this one was pretty awesome actually. The dry hopping really gave it that west coast IPA aroma and that combined with the sour really played with the senses.
Anderson Valley Nettied Madge Black IPA - lighter than some of the bigger versions of this beer out there but it wasn't bad. I could drink a few of these without getting overwhelmed.
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot - mmmmm Bigfoot. The 2011 is gooooooood. 3/10/2011 8:24:25 AM |
