what he said. The only reason I would think about getting the 3G is because of the GPS (and even still...why?) Or maybe if the 250 MB didn't expire at the end of the month. I think it would be neat to have some 3G time "stored up" or whatever, but I'm not about to pay an extra monthly fee for something that I am only gonna be using around wifi anyway.

I thought the general consensus on the Slate was that it wasn't that great either. Just a crappy netbook with a touchscreen. Which brings us back to the iPad, right? or waiting for something else. Personally, I'd like to wait until the 2nd gen iPad or something better but I don't think I'm gonna be able to make it that long.

I played with an iPad at the library yesterday.

I have to say, it was an extremely fun and amusing experiment. I have a bit of a crush on it. I didn't get a chance to read much on it, but I was browsing TWW with ease, so that probably counts. Compared to the Nook I played with today, it was just stupidly cool.

posting from mine now... i wouldn't pay full price for one but it is extremely useful to me and i'm thoroughly enjoying it. i think if it came with a slightly "truer" OS.. file systems etc.it'd easily be worth the price of admission. apple's making a mistake closing it off as much as they are, but my name isn't worth billions either. hopefully ole jobs will relax soon and give in to a few of the things people are asking for with the next iteration.

^ Better file access yes, but I don't know about a file system like we think of them now. I think a lot of people might be served better with a more itunes/spotlight file access system. Instead of worrying about where and how you save things you just save them and search for them later when you want them again. I've been doing this for a while on my mac. The content search in spotlight is so good, I almost never actually have to open the finder and go digging for a file, I just search for a few words in the file and it comes up in spotlight.

^ I agree. ^^ the way the OS works makes things insanely simple for everyone. When you start adding things like file systems and more truer OS features...it will lose some of its 'easy to use' appeal and start to feel like just another netbook running windows/mac os x.


The current setup for file sharing in apps could definitely use some serious improvements though. Having to share my pages docs in iTunes is a huge pain. If you could just sync them through wifi that would be ideal.

I live in an apartment complex that supplies W/D in each apartment. They're too small to wash large bedding items.

MiWi I think is what the most popular one is called. I haven't tried it out yet cause so far the only tethering I've done is over bluetooth to my macbook and mac mini.

I'll bet almost anything that a bluetooth tethering hack will be released for the iPad once it gets jailbroken. If that ever happens.

BTW, did you see the iPad 3Gs aren't carrier locked at all? You can cut down a T-mobile Sim card and use it on their service (Edge only, however). That's pretty good news for anyone looking to travel overseas with one.

You can on AT&T too, it just has to be with a non-iPad Sim card. Those are locked down to no voice/SMS service apparently.

Which makes me wonder if it would be possible to hack the baseband enough to make a phone call with the Sim from an iPhone.
