looked up the number of UK and UConn NCAA wins and came across San Francisco, who has two championships and were a dominant program in the 50s, 60s and 70s. They haven't done shit in forever, and when I looked up why:
Quote : | "1980s Suspension (Self-imposed) for NCAA Violations
The Dons' prominence in the 1970s came at a price, however. The NCAA slapped the Dons with probation two times in the late 1970s. Gaillard was forced out as coach due to the first investigation, and an in-house inquiry after the second resulted in Belluomini's ouster. It was also well known that basketball players got special treatment; many of them were marginal students at best, and at least one instance where a player threatened another student was swept under the rug by school officials.[13] It was also common for "tutors" to take tests and write papers for players.[12]
The situation finally came to a head in December 1981, when All-American guard Quintin Dailey assaulted a female student. During the subsequent investigation, Dailey admitted taking a no-show job at a business owned by a prominent non-sports USF donor. The donor had also paid Dailey $5,000 since 1980. Combined with other revelations, school president Rev. John Lo Schiavo announced on July 26 that he was shutting down the basketball program—the first time a school had shut down a major sport under such circumstances. The move was widely applauded by several members of the coaching fraternity,[13] as the Dailey matter revealed a program that was, in the words of San Francisco Chronicle sportswriter Glenn Dickey, "totally out of control."[12]" |
sounds familiar doesn't it?

Quote : | "Tarnished Heels chronicles the numerous events that have affected the University of North Carolina and seriously brought into question what was once a sterling reputation, both athletically and academically. From the time that knowledge of controversial actions first emerged publicly in 2010, a number of transgressions, events, and discoveries would redefine what was known as The Carolina Way. Players, coaches, faculty, and university leaders all played roles in the scandals, and in many cases appeared complicit.
The uncovered issues were staggering; Football coaches were also deemed to be working with NFL agents. Players received cash payments, travel expenses, and impermissible academic help. Sports agents were hired to teach classes at the university. A parent of a basketball All-American was hired as a university employee. Hundreds of fraudulent classes were discovered, countless basketball and football players were enrolled in them, and dozens of grades were forged and changed without permission. Basketball players received impermissible benefits from a convicted felon, who was also directly connected to UNC alumni." |

from the Kane article
Quote : | "Smith said Folt spent much of the meeting berating Willingham for her comments about the scandal in recent months, which included interviews with national media.
“There was no attempt to repair the relationship or to build a bridge,” Smith said. “Instead, from what I understand from Mary, it was just a tongue lashing, and I think that’s what kind of tipped the scales for Mary. When she realized that even Folt is beyond reach there isn’t much point in continuing.”

In other news the History Department was told that the program would be ended after this spring semester, citing their concern with pesky facts and the desire to dwell on things that have already happened. Said Chancellor Folt, "We hope this shows that we are looking to the future now, not to the past."

True but 10 years ago they had "The Carolina Way" to hide behind and all that other associated bullshit, not to mention AFAM to squirrel their kids into, a Dental Foundation to hire the players parents to keep them at school, etc. Now there is a lot more heat on the program and the reputation has been tarnished. Might make him at least consider it this time.5/6/2014 10:57:11 AM |
