I know of a dude that proposed after knowing her three days and they have been married for 40 years. It sometimes works.

Ken and I got engaged after 4 months. We have had our share of stupid while being married (mostly me) but commitment in the end did win out even over crazy. Commitment=love to me.

I think that 6 months should be the standard minimum before getting hitched.

By that time you should at least be getting on the same page about if you want the same thing or not. After that point, either some external factor is causing you to put it off (finances, school, bankruptcy, etc), you don't value marriage, or it's just not going well. "Information gathering" isn't a very good excuse. Life is only so long.

to be honest, i think that if you didn't do anything with the crush besides reconnect and spend some time together then this may be a secret to keep to yourself. especially if you can say you finally got that thought in the back of your mind about her out of there.

did it take you lying and traveling to see her? yes. but if nothing came of it and nothing will come of it then I think you are OK. it's if you are planning another trip to do it again that will make this a problem.
