BREAKING NEWSCanes acquire Doug Weighthttp://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=152946&hubname=nhlLooks like a bunch of draft picks are being sent over for him, and it says we outbid Nashville, Ottawa, and Calgary. I dont know how I feel about this... If the team aint broke, don't fix it. However, it is nice to be a little deeper with injuries and all.Someone on the Canes board is saying Zigomanis, Boulerice and draft picks. If this is true, then I am happy[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 1:43 PM. Reason : d]

"I believe I now have as good a chance as any to win a Stanley Cup and there was no way I was going to pass this up."So what do we have 5 good centers now? Or maybe Vasicek was involved in this trade?
1/30/2006 1:44:19 PM
a centerman?not a defenseman...
1/30/2006 1:45:17 PM
HOLY CRAP!I knew that the Canes were interested in Weight, but the rumors I heard was that the Blues wanted Ladd and some draft picks in return, which turned me off. Oh man, let's hope that this results in unloading some dead weight (*cough* Boulerice *cough*), no pun intended!
1/30/2006 1:49:28 PM
In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes:- Carolina's first-round pick in 2006.- Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.- Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.- Tough guy forward Jesse Boulerice, a 27-year-old eighth-year pro- Forward Mike Zigomanis, a 25-year-old fifth-year pro- Magnus Kahnberg, 25, an unsigned Carolina draftee from Sweden who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1my take: 1st round pick hurts, but that is probably what other teams were unwilling to give up. It seems kind of expensive for a guy who I think is going to be a UFA next year... I am inclined to give Rutherford the benefit of the doubt this year though. We get this guy too: Erkki Rajamakihttp://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=3195&hubname=nhl-blues[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 1:56 PM. holy shit, would have never guessed that trade would be made, but i guess with the loss of cullen, we needed a center[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 2:02 PM. Reason : a]
1/30/2006 2:00:29 PM
I guess i can live with the first round pick being given up, since it will be the #30 overall, bwahaha
1/30/2006 2:07:26 PM
Cullen will be back after the Olympic break, and Vasicek will be back then as well hopefully, so I guess we're going to carry 6 centers. Vasicek has played on the wing a lot in the past, so I'm sure that's what he will do, but I'm not sure who else will switch to wing.
1/30/2006 2:11:37 PM
Kevyn Adams has already been playing on the wing for most of the season. No biggie.
1/30/2006 2:13:47 PM
I think this is a pretty good trade. Draft picks hurt but those players have to develop and based on our ranking this year we aren't looking at a high first round pick anyways.
1/30/2006 2:45:01 PM
1/30/2006 2:55:53 PM
This is should tell everyone that this team is going after the Stanley Cup this year...
1/30/2006 3:28:43 PM
I'm really looking forward to NHL Live tomorrow morning to hear their take on this. They've been singing the praises of the Canes as of recently (this morning they mentioned Brind'Amour as a potential candidate for MVP, definitely nice to hear), so we'll see what this trade brings up.The "Your Call" posts on TSN are a pure source of entertainment in the meantime
1/30/2006 3:37:57 PM
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/hockey/nhl/01/30/weight.traded/index.htmlneat poll on the side, looks like people think this is a huge pickup for us
1/30/2006 3:46:08 PM
Weight will be an UFA by the end of the year, so we'll have for about 40 games. The price is pretty steep for 40 games. We better win the Stanley cup because of this.
1/30/2006 4:17:43 PM
It's a big acquisition, but I'm not happy about giving up a first round pick for what the team and Weight himself terms as a "rental". I'd be happier about the deal if Weight had more years left in his contract.
1/30/2006 4:37:46 PM
At 5.7 million a year, I wouldn't want him to have anymore years on his contract after this.
1/30/2006 4:48:52 PM
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=burnside_scott&id=2312343According to the above article, looks like Rutherford won't be making any more moves between now and the trade deadline unless there's an injury to account for.
1/30/2006 4:49:12 PM
1/30/2006 4:50:52 PM
The salary for this deal is the the balance of the season (31 games), so we'll owe $2.15 million to Weight. Players are not paid during the p-word, so there's nothing to worry about there.[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 5:26 PM. Reason : d]

I like this. My only question, do we need this many centers?BrindyStaalWeightCullenKevynVasicekWho gets winged besides Adams? Cullen, maybe?
1/30/2006 7:23:15 PM
I think Adams will still play center on the 4th line. Vasicek has played wing a lot before so I'm sure he will when he comes back, and I would imagine Cullen will as well. Staal Stillman ColeVasicek Brind'Amour WilliamsWeight Whitney CullenAdams Ladd LaRose/Adams/7th defensemanSomething like that perhaps?[Edited on January 30, 2006 at 7:28 PM. Reason : maybe switch Ladd and Vasicek?]
1/30/2006 7:26:14 PM
So.... after all of this news today, and reading great things about the team, it has finally hit me how good this team is, and that we might actually contend for the cup. It has really put a smile on my face to think of what could come out of this season, especially considering where this team has been the last few years, and all the assholes talking about relocation. Has anyone else started to feel like this? I knew we were damn good, but it just took today to really grasp everything.
1/30/2006 7:34:32 PM
I've been feeling it for a while, but I think it just went up a notch today. Just this morning I was reading Bob McKenzie's column, and he said Calgary and Ottawa were the leading candidates for Weight. I think this is the first time a player has come here because he thought the Canes were a contender. I'm used to us dumping players off at this time of the year. This is the biggest trade the Canes have made since relocating here I think, and it is going to be weird going into the playoffs if the Hurricanes are one of the favorites to win it all. I should have put some money on them when the odds were like 200:1!
1/30/2006 7:39:22 PM
Canes recall David Gove from Lowell, he will be available for the road trip...http://carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1457who the fuck is david gove?
1/30/2006 8:17:52 PM
^Don't know who he is, but he's not a prima donna and that's all that matters to me.I am just stunned at how well and hard we are playing this year. I hate to say it, but I think there were some particular ego issues in years past that hurt. Now, it seems like it's all team and no ego for everyone. Even the goalies both seem content with their share of the net. This team is so much better than past Carolina teams that it is almost unfathomable.
1/30/2006 8:28:03 PM
nicesenators losing 4-0 to boston and philly is down a goal to NYR heading into the 3rd
1/30/2006 8:55:30 PM
its surreal that the canes not only moved into 1st place, but now have a 4 pts lead over #2. that is amazing.
1/30/2006 9:05:05 PM
that lead will be tough to hold on to with the 4 games road trip coming up.
1/30/2006 11:57:49 PM
We signed Gove after the rookie/prospect camp during the summer. He's a Ziggy-type player, and now that Ziggy's gone, some guys like Gove and Aucoin will get a chance to plug in here and there and see how they do in the show.
1/31/2006 2:31:35 AM
He's probably gonna play for one game only, cause Weight will start playing on Friday.
1/31/2006 10:04:01 AM
^^^^sens have two games in hand, but yes 4 points is solid!
1/31/2006 10:21:33 AM
I am just having trouble believing that somewon Waived a "no trade" clause to come to carolina. And people please, I think it was pretty obvious that we were after the cup before the trade, considering we have been #1-#3 in the league all year. Act like you been there before. (Cause we have).
1/31/2006 10:53:31 AM
^yeah, as the fluke 16 seed in the playoffswe have been there before, but never really had a "chance" at the cup
1/31/2006 11:05:49 AM
I think we had as good a chance as any team has had after we took home ice away from Detroit, winning game one, then having a great shot to win game 3 in triple OT.Plus we were a 3 seed in the east that year, and after getting by NJ, we had a reasonably open road.
1/31/2006 11:12:22 AM
I worked for the NHL up in New York, and to be honest, I was a huge Carolina fan, but nobody outside of Wake County thought they had a chanceAfter the second game, I went to the copier and they had already designed the cover for the Red Wings victory DVDI know we had a "chance", but with the difference in firepower, that chance was a longshot!

WhoopsI just looked at the last names and filled in the first names myself
1/31/2006 12:31:07 PM
(jumping back to yesterday...)Erik Cole's reaction to the Weight trade was, by far, the best. I could hear him put on his fake Canadian accent (not to be confused with his upstate NY accent - the two often blend) as he said:
1/31/2006 12:57:44 PM
what the hell has happened to Vrbata
1/31/2006 1:18:37 PM
He was traded to Chicago a few weeks ago.

someone be sure and give weight the memo;the canes dont do shit all game, once they get down 2 goals, which is usually around 3 minutes left in the 3rd period, they go on a frenzy.[Edited on January 31, 2006 at 1:47 PM. Reason : -]
1/31/2006 1:47:22 PM
I think he got a little taste of it already when the Blues were up 2-0 on Carolina after 1, and Eric Staal came back after losing a tooth to score a hat trick en route to the Canes' 4-2 win.
