I was thinking that might be the case...I'll have to try an OTA antenna to confirm the main issue is my signal.

Crap. I've been offered no promotions what-so-ever for my U-verse internet...told them to turn it off then. We'll see what happens.

Load up their chat client and complain about pricing. Last time I got $42/month discount for 12 months.

I *was* playing the HBO/Cinemax game of dropping it every three months, then adding it under their "free for 3 months* promotion, but forgot to drop it one time and got hit with the charge. Chatted with them about it and the guy gave me that $42/month discount...only thing is I can't seem to get that HBO offer to work anymore, but 42>26 so I'm happy.

I opened up chat about a different issue a couple weeks ago and they guy offered me $30 off my next months bill without me even complaining about anything...I was just trying to get my sports package to activate!

Just bought a house where Uverse is available. Is it worth it to switch from TWC just for internet?

I'm actually pretty happy with my TWC service. I haven't had a single outage in at least two years, which is a pretty big deal since I work from home a lot. The Uverse 18Mbps ("Max Plus") service is $56/mo, but I'm guessing with all the hidden fees and taxes it will be a bit higher than that. TWC is about $61 total ($54.99 + $5 modem lease + taxes), and I regularly get 16Mbps speeds. It doesn't sound like AT&T has anything to differentiate itself from TWC.

I'm moving to a new place that has availability and I can go from twc and directv and save almost $80/mo for basically the same stuff. Am I missing something here? I assume I have to sign some sort of contract, anyone know if it is a one or two year?

the internet isn't gonna be as good, and i'm skeptical you'll actually save that much money (especially after any promotions expire)

I think we would still save a little after promos but not a ton. I can't imagine the internet being that shitty compared to TWC, that shit is pathetic where I am.

I had called TWC to transfer my service to my new place, and they told me that my 26 year old house has never had cable service, even though there's a TWC box on the side of the house and cable hookup in every room... fuck 'em. Went on AT&T's website and signed up for Uverse in 5 minutes. AT&T came out to install it last week, spent 6 hours here, then told me they'd have to move my hookup to a new pedestal before I could get service. No ETA on when that work will be completed

You'd think a market like ther triangle would have better provider options? Right now (in Richmond VA) I'm on comcast, which was aight until they raised my rates and basically told me to suck it when I called to complain.

so I just signed up to switch to fios. I'll lose a few tv channels but upgrading to 50/25 internet and adding dvr. $109/mo for the 50/25 "quantum", mid-tier tv, hd plus dvr. Not bad.

I am in Dallas and in my current house TWC is literally the only option. When we move soon I can get uverse but that is the only other option.

Anyone know if the person installing my service will run cable for me? There is no cable outlet in our living room so we will need to put one in, I wasn't sure if I should get that done before they get there to install it or just have them do it.

^^ Will they run the cable? I don't care if they put in the outlet, I can handle that, I just am not sure how to run the wire.

^ Uverse is basically a combo of fiber and DSL. The fiber will come to a box in your neighborhood, then there will be copper lines that run from the box to your house. They'll install a small box on the side of your house, then, yes, they will run Ethernet cable from the box to where ever you want in the house. Based on my experience, expect them to drill straight through walls/floors to get the cable where it needs to go. I doubt they'd be willing to climb through an attic to drop cables in the walls, but I don't know fore sure as I didn't ask them to try. Then they'll connect and activate the modem/router they provide.

Uverse has wireless cable boxes now.

^ Ya, those are for your extra TVs. I don't have their TV service, but I'm fairly sure there is still at least one modem and/or receiver that is wired which acts as a wireless AP for the receivers. With no TV service they gave me a box that acts as the DSL modem, router/switch, and wireless AP.

Correct. On mine at least they have a little access point thing that plugs into the main gateway/modem/router/whatever thing which communicate to the wireless receivers. Newer units probably have that functionality built in...and I assume the main DVR has to be wired, but I can't say for sure. I imagine you'd want it wired if possible.

It looks like they will do it, the only way to get a cable to my living room would be to run it through the attic since we don't have a basement or crawlspace. I am fine with drilling a hole in the wall and dropping it through the attic, I will just put an outlet cover in. I was pretty surprised to see the lack of cable outlets in this house, it is an older house but was recently renovated and has like 6 electrical outlets in each room but no cable ones (not that the coax cable necessarily matters since they will use cat5 for this anyways). Thanks for the input.

anyone have the $7/mo Premium Tier HD channel option? Is it worth it at all? They boast getting a lot of the regional FSN networks, but that's pretty much useless when the baseball games will be blacked out right?

I normally add the Premium Tier for NFL Red Zone and then cancel it when the season is over. I don't really miss the other channels. Palladia and Smithsonian channel would show some neat stuff every now and then, but I didn't think it was $7 a month worth.

They'll lower your bill to something more reasonable if you talk to the customer retention goofs.
I just call every year and threaten to switch to Time Warner. I think they knocked it down $30/month for me last time. Hopefully I can threaten to (or actually) switch to Google soon.

eh, i know that whole dog and pony show but i think i'm really going to cut the cord for the summer. As soon as Fargo and the Cup finals end. I think i'll do basic package, faster internet, and rely on torrents and hulu for the rest.

lolol well.....this didn't go as planned.

I am now the proud subscriber to the U300 package, HBO/Cinemax for another 3 months free, and Max Plus 18 internet all for the price of $120 a month.

Hell, I wasn't ready to cut the cord, the extra channels don't really mean shit to me, but the internet is well worth it and i can keep my live sports

They're coming out tomorrow to do whatever onsite work is required to upgrade me to the apparently-new-for-this-area 45Mbps "Power" internet package. Moving up from the 24Mbps package I've had for the past few years. Hopefully they bring a network bridge and not some goofy router/gateway bullshit.

Question for those currently using their own wireless routers with U-verse:

The technician told me it would be simple, just like connecting to TWC. Plug in the router to the modem, log into router's setup page to configure any customization and go.

Well, my router (Cisco Linksys E2000) can't seem to talk to the internet (I get "limited connectivity", no websites/services load, Win8 troubleshooter keeps telling me to reboot the modem, that didn't help). I can connect to its SSID, but no access to the internet, even through ethernet. The AT&T built-in wifi works fine, but I'd like to use my own for 2 reasons: AT&T's is only g, I'd like at least n, and in my new apartment the modem has to be stuffed into a closet, and I'm seeing some limited range from it.

Any tips? I've tried disabling the AT&T modem/router's wireless, that didn't help. I've searched online, but to no avail. I'm working on getting a loaner router to try, to see if my router is just caput. Thanks in advance.

I'm using my own router with the U-Verse gateway. You need to make sure that your router is on a separate subnet than the U-Verse gateway and then log into the gateway and put your router in the DMZ.

i.e. if the gateway is on the 192.168.1.x subnet, which is the default, then put your router on 192.168.2.x

You can then either assign your router a static IP from the gateway and put that IP in the DMZ or put it in DMZ by MAC address

Has anyone heard of uverse charging people for modems?

Friend of mine is having problems with his (dont know exact symptoms), and he said their customer service wants to charge him $100 + shipping for a replacement.

yikes, no i haven't. my DVR box has started becoming slow to respond to my remote control inputs lately. and every now and then it'll lose it's HDMI signal from the box to the TV and i'll have to unplug the HDMI for a minute or two. I thought about requesting a replacement, but if they want a similar cost for that i'll just deal with it.

has anyone signed up for the $49/mo bundle with Max Internet, Basic TV, and HBO+Amazon Prime? 12 month contract required, but seems like an OK compromise if trying to cut the cord.

my current promotion expires in June and i'm planning to dump cable for awhile. I have to keep Uverse internet so i'm trying to figure out my best option.

If I just signed up for direct tv and they said I should get ATT (that is the provider for out here)

Do you think I can add the internet service along with my cell phone bill? Aka go into an ATT store?

Thanks!

the AT&T store probably couldn't help you, but you can link accounts through the website. I have my u-verse internet+TV and my wireless account linked together. The bills still come separately since they're two different products, but i can view everything regarding them under one page.

I just saw a WRAL article about some apartment complex in North Hills has gigabit service from AT&T. Apparently it comes with a 1 TB data cap. At 1 gbps you could burn through that in 3 hours.

The cap is not enforced. I have moved more than 4TB since I got the service two months ago.
