The Toshiba press conference at CES is almost sad.
http://gizmodo.com/341216/toshiba-press-conference-liveblog
Quote : | "President guy onstage: "We are surprised by Warner Bros. announcement" that they're dropping HD DVD and are "particularly disappointed" since HD DVD has gained "momentum" in the market. "We maintain the belief that HD DVD" is best for consumers. Sounds just like the press release!
VP of Digital A/V Marketing: "As you can imagine this is a tough day for me... I expected to come here today to share the successes of HD DVD..." "It's difficult for me to read all the pundits declare that HD DVD is dead, but we've been declared dead before." "HD DVD is the only format approved by the DVD Forum" so every one meets a standard. Translation: Blu-ray profile spec is a clusterf*ck. She looks like she's trying to not break down onstage or something. Stay strong!" |
Also, all of you who were saying stand-alone sales would decide this war may have been right after all!
So not only did Blu-ray stand-alones outsell HD DVD stand-alones 2:1 in December, they caught up and outsold HD DVD for the whole of 2007. It's all over but the crying folks.

^yea, me too, i'd think microsoft would have more sway than sony
i'm not disagreeing with any of you. i said from the start that i wouldn't buy until there was a clear winner. the WB decision was the nail in the coffin and i clearly stated that it would come down to one of two options, one being if studios were to drop HD DVD support, i also thought it would come down to statistics of standalone players (which until last month was favoring HD DVD) but obviously December was a big month for blu-ray (which could have been a factor WB was looking at as well)
was i wrong about video gamers deciding a movie format war, sure i was, does that mean i'm an HD DVD fanboy who's crying about it? absolutely not.
Quote : | "Hahahahahahah, looks like retailers have already jumped ship." |
the HDA3 is $299, that's it's normal price and it's an older generation (recently replaced by the HDA30), how is that considered jumping ship? (the DR400 isn't HD DVD)
now THIS is jumping ship: http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=191903

^I was alluding to text in the ad, where they call it a "Toshiba Up-Converting DVD Player", rather than an HD DVD player. The funniest part is that it says it up-converts to 1080i, whereas the cheaper player above it does 1080p and records.

He's saying it because the unknown retailer's ad that he posted doesn't list it as an HD DVD player, just an upconverting DVD player.
It's probably more of an oversight than hopping off the bandwagon unless it's an online only ad or a company decided to reprint all their ads in light of the announcement. 1/6/2008 5:18:01 PM |

All sorts of whacko theories going about.
Of course, MS *could* completely own Sony by shipping Xbox360's with HD DVD records and proclaiming content downloaded from Xbox Live and/or your PC can be recorded onto HD DVD's in their full glory.

right, i'd much rather the player do the decoding so
A) the receiver only needs to be HDMI 1.1 and thus just take the multichan PCMs
B) so the player can mix its own audio for PiPs and commentary overlays, etc.
kinda like every HDDVD player thats out there...
There's no way in hell i'm gonna buy an inferior Profile 1 or 1.1 player for more now and THEN go buy a whole new 2.0 player next year. this shit is rediculous 1/7/2008 9:11:20 AM |
Shrike All American 9594 Posts user info edit post |
Onboard decoding of HD audio formats isn't part of any Profile requirements though, and isn't required for anything movie related. Profile 1.1 requires support for all the IME stuff like PiP. Pretty much any player released from here on in will have that. Profile 2.0 is the web interactivity shit, and is an optional spec. It's not like receivers that do onboard decoding are any more expensive or rarer than ones that only accept full multi-channel PCM. The Onkyo 605 can be had for well under $400, and has been out since early last year.
There were a number of Blu-ray players announced during CES, ranging from $300 to $650, that cover everything from Profile 1.1 with no onboard decoding to BD-Live and decoding for all HD formats.
Oh and just to hammer the point home one more time, HD DVD really is dead.

this IS sony we're talking about...if they can, they will ass rape consumers until they bleed or sony gets bored
my two cents: i own neither an HD-DVD player nor a blu-ray player (or PS3), so this decision is nothing but beneficial for me...after all, it means that now that blu-ray is going to eventually beat out HD-DVD (and it will, there's no doubt about it, as much as i might hope), i don't have to make a decision and my money will be (relatively) well-spent since i won't have to wonder if the format will be around in 6 months
that said, sony really is a horrible company with a history of taking advantage of consumers with ridiculous prices on unnecessarily proprietary crap...i full admit i wanted blu-ray to lose solely because sony doesn't deserve my business, but i do suppose i'll give in eventually (when prices are reasonable, of course) and use their equipment, if grudgingly
oh, and, haha:

why the hell does ms care about hd-dvd? if they did they would offer a xbox360 with it built in by now.
there's a interesting article about how ms doesnt want either to 'win' they would prefer a massive digital dl market....
only problem with that is the sheer size of some of the HD movies and some full games will still take days to DL....

MS isn't Sony in that they aren't hampered with the trouble of perennially retarded.
Their math was simple:
Try and help HD DVD win the format war and make Sony look stupid.
or
Destroy the PS3 utterly by having an entire year to itself with an early release.
17.1 million Xbox360's later and a library thats outsold the PS3/Wii software sales combined I'd say their bet payed off well.
By the time Sony gets its home service rolled out, XBLive 3.0 will be under development.
By the time the PS3 stops being utterly worthless as a gaming platform, the next Xbox machine will be late in its design phases.
Honestly, why should MS remotely care about HD DVD. They won the gaming war and are set to win the home download front as well.*

I think the one point that's really not being brought up is that even if HD DVD does die, it's absolutely no guarantee that Sony won't still fuck it up. Even with HD DVD dead, they've still got overpriced players, already outdated players, consumer apathy, and any number of other issues to conquer.

It's getting a bit off topic now, if we're talking about the merits of the X-Box 360 versus the Playstation 3, and the games that you can play on them.
HDM Releases for January 08, 2008
* 3:10 to Yuma (2007) (Blu-ray) * Con Air (Blu-ray) * Dragon Wars (Blu-ray) * Killing Machine/Shogun's Ninja (Blu-ray) * Man on Fire (Blu-ray) * Mobsters (HD DVD) * Night of the Werewolf/Vengeance of the Zombies (Blu-ray) * The Pianist (HD DVD) * The Rock (Blu-ray) * Sister Street Fighter/Sister Street Fighter 2 (Blu-ray) * Sunshine (Blu-ray) * White Noise (HD DVD) * White Noise 2: The Light (HD DVD) * Zodiac: Director's Cut (HD DVD)
A crap-ton of big releases tomorrow. Con Air, The Rock, and Man On Fire are all great movies for HD. Dragon Wars (25% on RottenTomatoes) might be campy enough to be good.
Personally I can't wait to watch 3:10. I didn't hear much about it, but it got an 88% on RT, so it's next on my list after I get around to watching Blade Runner. 1/7/2008 1:30:15 PM |

hmm... interesting concept, sounds like another apple scheme, which if it involves DRM of any kind (and knowing sony it may) than this could end up being worse for the consumer
if they do what apple did and make the content affordable, they can create a similar monopoly like apple has on the music industry and keep their hardware prices high (again like apple)
time to buy sony stock?
