http://theshiver.com/2008/10/predictions/

i meant to repost this yesterday.

We have been flooded with emails from readers wanting to know where we think certain 2009 basketball recruits will end up. So we got together, pulled the info we have and the rumors we hear, and came up with some predictions. This is purely speculation on our part.

Xavier Henry: This would appear to be the worst kept secret in Memphis. Many people that we know are close to the Memphis program, and even more that claim to be, have told us that Henry himself has notified the Memphis coaching staff of his intentions. After almost pulling the trigger earlier this summer, his brother enrolling at Memphis, and the many, many reports of this being a done deal, we have no choice but to think X will be a Memphis Tiger. From what we hear, Henry thinks that the Memphis program is better suited to get him to the NBA after only one year of college. He may be right. Memphis plays in a weak conference where players like Henry could dominate from the get go. Unless Bill Self and the Kansas program blow the doors off Xavier during his official visit on October 17th, we predict he will be a Tiger.

John Wall: This one is a little more cloudy. Wall’s former coach, Dwon Clifton, is now on the Baylor coaching staff. When Baylor made the hire, the hot rumor was that Wall would shortly follow. As it turns out, Kansas is the only official visit Wall has been on and he has yet to schedule any others. It is rumored that he will visit Memphis (maybe as early as Oct 17th), Baylor, and Oregon before deciding. We would also suggest you don’t hold your breath on Wall deciding before spring. Wall says he has no leader, but it appears that Memphis and Kansas have been front of mind for Wall lately. Our prediction? We think John Wall stays close to home at NC State

Lance Stephenson: Lance “Born ready” Stephenson is on of the most followed high school players the nation has seen since Sebastian Telfair, who also played at Lincoln High School. Lance and some around him have each named different schools as places he is interested in. Kansas, Memphis, St. John’s, USC, and UCLA have all been mentioned. At the end of the day, we don’t think Lance can leave the limelight of NYC. St. John’s.

Thomas Robinson: Robinson now says that Kansas and Memphis are his final two after getting back from his official visit to Memphis this past weekend. He made the trip to Lawrence during the weekend of September 20th, when John Wall visited too. After that visit, it was rumored that Robinson would go ahead and give his verbal commit to Kansas. He didn’t, and made another visit. It seems unlikely that Kansas would take both Robinson and Daniel Orton, so it might turn into a game of “who commits first.” We think Robinson does, to Kansas.

Daniel Orton: Obviously since we think Robinson is going to Kansas and we don’t believe that Kansas would take both Orton and Robinson, we predict that Orton will commit to Kentucky.

Dominic Cheek: Cheek is certainly interesting. Cheek has east coast schools UCONN and Villanova hoping that he stays in the east and play in one of their programs. Memphis and Kansas are hoping that Cheek is willing to get away from the east to play for them. In the end, again, being fairly close to home is too important. Our prediction? Villanova.

Elijah Johnson: Kansas and Oklahoma seem to be the two schools that will be battling for the uber athletic Johnson. Johnson will be visiting Kansas on October 17th, and we don’t think it will be long after that before Johnson is a Jayhawk to be.

Come on John Wall! If we somehow landed him I think he would take us to the tournament all by himself, regardless of who else we get/have gotten. Albeit, only that one year he is here.

Derek Favors making an official visit sometime this weekend, but does anyone know if this "weekend" stretches out for the football game on Thursday? We get Favors and Wall will fall like a domino. (lol that could be a shitty rap lyric).

Ah crap why do I have to be in Charlotte this weekend.

Ok get the word out people. Reynolds Coliseum needs to be packed. A Derrick Favors chant also should be started once he enters the building. I hope our fans do our part and impress Mr. Favors.

Well there is already a thread on PP. Ooh what about advertising in the free expression wall. Perhaps someone can spray paint "WELCOME TO NC STATE DERRICK FAVORS" or "COME TO STATE MR. FAVORS".

^yes, now we're talking. the famous free expression tunnel painting is how i found out about tww. You should also put time, place, date for people to come out.

FYI, both tww and packpride have tried to have threads about showing up for this event or that, and they have both failed miserably. That's why I highly doubt the effectiveness of organizing real life things on either forum.

If 10 people on TWW see it and tell some other people, then thats good enough for me. If more people get involved, then its gravy....but unless the school advertises the open practice and someone starts spreading the word that Favors will be in town (and who he is)...then the event will be a complete failure.

Just tell everyone you know...and tell them why its important.

The technican better get in on this early. I only know when are pep rallies are because they print them the day of the rally, which is too late for me to find out about it. Get the word out early so people can plan to be there Saturday.

Seriously, someone get Technician on this. Also, someone over at Pack Pride spread the word. I'm sure there's tons of people over there with nothing better to do.

This isn't just any recruit ... it's the best one in the country. What's even bigger is the fact that a commitment from him could go a long way to getting a commitment from Wall.

I wonder if there's anyway Lowe could bring Howell and Brown in this weekend too? With those guys being from GA, it couldn't hurt.

What would be awesome as shit is to bring Brown, Howell, Wood, and Wall to town (along with Favors). Maybe get some sort of scrimmage going in Reynolds ... how bout those five verse State's current starting five? That one could get ugly...

you're kidding, right? You realize that's pretty much what got us on probation in '73 (David Thompson scrimmaging with current players while he was in HS) and cost us a possible National Championship

Actually playing against current players wasn't what got us put on probation. Here's how the story goes. DT committed to State. Afterwards he ended up playing a pickup game with some State players and I think a UNC football player. Assistant coach and alum Eddie Biedenbach, whose now the head coach at UNC-Asheville, also played in that game. Ol Deano got word of this and got Bill Guthridge's old roommate from Kansas State who was some higher up for the NCAA to put us on probation, b/c they said that they considered it a tryout, which was stupid since he was already committed. There also came into question us providing DT a free place to stay when he'd visit us (I don't know if the NCAA had a distinction between official and unofficial visits back then). In reality DT stayed in the dorm room of a high school friend of his that was currently attending State. The State coaches didn't know about this, and I don't fault David for doing it. I mean come on, if I go and visit a college that a friend of mine attends, then I would take advantage of that and stay with them rather than ponying up money to stay in a hotel.

The probation we were on for recruiting DT was horse crap, nit picking, and is only good for people to talk shit about us. If you believe we did something wrong there, you're buying into the bs people are feeding you and those people hate NC State.

We still won one, so those people can eat shit.

BTW, whats up with all the BS about NC State history thats been falsely stated these past couple of days on this website?

Yeah Deano was pissed he didn't get DT so decided to take care it himself. And for the record, Dean Smith is one of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my entire life. When he started acting like a jerk and fussing meout even before he takes his first swing on the first tee, that is an asshole; I was his caddy. He acted like I should be thanking him for being able to be around him.....f*ckin jerk

I know that the prospects can play against the current players in front of the coaches whenever they attend camp. Case in point Ryan Harrow talked about how cool it was to be able to play against college players when he attended our elite camp.

has already been to uga and gt. state is this weekend... arent the only other schools on him right now fsu and memphis? im sure he'll take all 5. i can't imagine him going to FSU or UGA (even though UGA is home state).

i think it comes down to GT/State/Memphis in that order.

Just out of curiosity (and I have a hard time putting myself in the shoes of a highly sought after recruit), would a bunch of people coming out to an open practice like that really mean a lot? I'm not suggesting it wouldn't, I can see how it actually would, but what would go through their mind when they see that? What impression would stick in their head about our school?

The passion we have for basketball and how we support our team would stand out. It would show him that he's on Tobacco Road, the best place for college basketball in the nation. His coach has said that winning is important to Derrick, and if we show that we have a passion to win, perhaps he would think he could help us win. If he wants to play in the best atmospheres, in the best conference, and against the best talent out there, at a school with some of the best facilities out there, then he'll come here.

Why do you think so many highly recruited football players end up going to SEC schools? The SEC schools have the best atmospheres (and also pay the best ).

Nah, Calipari wouldn't drop it in his pocket. The President of FedEx, who is a big booster for Memphis, though might do it though. He actually called one of his employees to talk to her about her son who was an elite level basketball prospect. This was a violation. Of course the NCAA didn't do anything about it.

Someone should make fliers for campus. This is one of those rare opportunities for us as fans to actually have an impact on our program. If there is overwhelming support at Reynolds, who knows, it could be the push over the edge we need...
