FINNISH THREE STARS OF THE GAME

In order to go to the playoffs I think the Canes will have to win 38 of the remaining 50....

I think with the effort of the past two weeks they could win 25 to 30 of them. Which might put us out of the race for Seguin and Hall, but they aren't Crosby or Ovechkin. Seguin just got cut from the World Junior team, so I don't think we even want to "race" for those two guys. I think we need to build through trades first, free agency second, and the draft third. We have a great young core, some guys that can be traded for draft picks, and then a low finish to get a solid draft pick in the draft.

I think the Canes can be a solid 7th or 8th place team next year, and then a 4-8 the following season. To take it even further, I can also see them being a 1-3 team the year beyond that.

Don't read into Seguin getting cut by Canada. Canada will only take one 17 year old this year at best. They're just too deep, the tournament has always been dominated by the 19 year olds, so that's my 2 cents on that. Staal didn't make it when he was 17 and he was highly touted and that's worked out quite well for the Canes (at least when he wants to play and/or isn't hurt). Hall missed them last year when he was 17, so once again don't look into it, Canada normally only takes one 17 year old with them to the tournament.

Hooray Finnish Domination tonight.

And one other thing, I think winning 25-30 of the next 48 or so games. As awesome as the turn around would be, I think it wouldn't benefit us long term. I want us to finish in the bottom 5 so we have the chance to get Hall to play on Staal's, Sutter's or Boychuk's left wing. Unless one of them can move to the wing or Seguin can, I'd think Hall would be the first choice, but who knows.

I don't think you understand how good these guys are. No, they may not be Crosby or Ovechkin. But, NO ONE in the last 20 years has been Crosby or Ovechkin. They are generational players. Seguin was cut from the World Junior team because he was 17 years old. Pretty much NO ONE makes the team at that age. Eric Staal didn't make the team either in his underage year.

Great win tonight! I don't want us to start closing the gap on 29th or anything, but it is fun to win at home, and great to see Ruutu get his first NHL hat trick. As a reward he got a Ruutu koozie from steviewonder after the game.

Tonight we are all Finns.

I was born in Finland. Vantaa, Finland to be more exact (Same city, same hospital as Ruutu). That's my claim to fame Moved to the U.S. when I was 7. Still visit frequently, last trip was in July w/ the gf.

Wish I could have gone to that game tonight instead of losing my own semi-final hockey game
/end life story

Canes will make the playoffs. Plenty of time.

As far as the Seguin situation goes, Bob McKenzie said it best: the only underage players who had a shot at making the Canadian WJC team are already playing serious pro hockey and won't be let go by their teams to play in the WJC.

Finnish three stars was nice, I guess, but anyone who thinks Pitkanen had a better game than Staal is blind.

I hate to admit it, and they're sure as hell not worth $8 million as a group, but the fourth line did their job tonight, and did it well.

I have heard that these two guys aren't even as good as Stamkos or that kid drafted by the Isles Tavares....

But I trust Vinyl and Vulcan... so if we get one of those two chaps I will be pretty damn excited.

The general consensus is that if Hall was in last year's draft, he would have gone number one ahead of Tavares, Hedman, and Duchene. I'm not sure about Seguin, though. Either way, these are players (and Cam Fowler is too) that are franchise changing.

Jrb, don't get your hopes up in December. There is a trade freeze around the holidays, so it's not happening until the second week of Jan. at the earliest I would imagine.

JR said he had complete faith in Laviolette and then fired him two days later.

If anything, I take statements from JR about definitely not doing anything to mean just the opposite.

Forslund told a story once that when he was working for the Whalers as PR director the night before the draft, he asked JR if they were going to make any moves and JR said, "No, John, no moves. Go to bed." He then called Forslund two hours later to discuss press releases for the trade he had just made.
