Now that football season is right around the corner it looks like most of the ignorance has returned to ST...I don't post much but I read daily and it's always interesting to see people popping back up who don't have have a clue.

Quote :
"no kidding, Evans can't even outrun a defensive lineman...It's sometimes difficult to comprehend how slow Evans is
"

You do understand that decent/good college DTs are running sub 5.0 40s while DEs are running 4.6s and 4.7s...

Quote :
"garbage coaching decision to redshirt glennon.

pure.

garbage.

i recall a certain philip rivers playing every game, freshman to senior. give this guy a shot. we all know that evans sucks.

now we get to see a 2 QB carousel AGAIN"

Redshirting Glennon was by FAR the best decision for the program. There is no reason to throw Glennon out there. He is TOBs biggest recruit and a QB that fits the system he wants to run. However, the rest of our personel does NOT fight the system TOB wants to run. Let Glennon do exactly what TOB said, sit a year, absorb and learn. Obviously if Glennon was leaps and bounds above Evans and Wilson he would be playing...but he's not...so we can conclude that he is probably showing the same amount of production (or less) that Evans and Wilson are.

Saying we have another year of QB carousel is premature, I still think Evans will get the nod, if he doesn't perform it will go to Wilson and that will probably be it. I don't see much bouncing around, there is no reason. Evans is gone after this year so if he doesn't perform it's not like the experience will help him for next season. But if he does perform you have a 5th year senior behind QB who is smart and experienced. There was tremendous growth from Evans between 06 and 07 and I think we see similar growth this year.

Rivers was the exception, not the rule. There are not a lot of true freshmen qb's that come in and do what he did, much less for 4 years.

If he really is that good we'll have him for his solid years anyway, and he can still stay and play for 4 seasons, don't assume he'll redshirt and be in the nfl and not stick around. If he isn't ready then it isn't smart to feed him to the dogs and risk injury etc.

The really key point here is that every QB is not Rivers.

Even every star QB recruit is not Rivers.

It's not really fair to compare every friggin' recruit we get to a once-in-a-lifetime kind of talent.

im not comparing the players, im comparing the opportunity.

my only thinking is that maybe glennon stunk it up in practice? i mean Wilson hasn't played a down either, so why is TOB waiting to announce Evans as the starter? Spurrier knows now that it will be evans, and now that little prick will start preparing for...the evans...threat? there will be no justification in playing Wilson at USC now unless somethign happens to evans

Quote :
"While he’s an exceptional talent, he’s just not ready to handle some of the situations, and that became apparent.” "

that same quote could well apply to Wilson

if u dont want to announce a starter yet for stragetic purposes, why announce glennon as a redshirt.

i'm thinking Glennon made some bad decisions and didn't have the composure needed running the 2 minute and 4 minutes offenses.

You can throw out all the silly numbers you want, but the point is that a descent QB should be able to scramble and avoid a sack at least some of the time, and not just stand in the pocket and get clobbered by the slowest defensive players on the field because he has the speed of a tortoise

Not true, just means he probably isn't ready to play college football just yet. The coaches see him everyday, they know best what he is and isn't capable of doing. In the NFL you can get away with throwing in a rookie qb and having him learn on the fly, but the jump from high school to college is much more significant then college to pro and it can be pretty detrimental to have a kid in there who isn't ready. A lot don't recover from that, and you've wasted your prize recruit in a year that he probably won't learn anything more then how to take a hit.

I like the decision, let Glennon develop...

Plus our wide receivers are some of the tallest in the ACC, so Evans jump balls should work nicely

amen, brother. Its all about the O line - if they have to stack the box because Eugene or Andre is running up their gut .... Evans becomes a better QB.

Also TOB is giving us an advantage over SC in the QB category:
NCSU QB experience : 2+ yrs > SC QB experience 0-1+yrs....

Maybe the Jimmie V haircut is what he's been needin?

with the qbs we have on the roster, if glennon was ready then tob would have started him... he is obviously not ready, thus of course it is the right decision... he is the one at practice and the one getting paid to make the decision

Nice to see Evans get some kudos for a change. I think he's been unfairly singled out the past 2 seasons for some of our losses. Bottom line is that he's not talented enough to put the team on his back. No shame in that. He's done well, if not very well, however when State's had a decent RUNNING game. People tend to gloss over that fact.

Evans can manage the game and run the offense. Throwing a freshman QB into the fray having never started a college game, NOT been there for spring practice, and doing so with a offense that will definitely go through growing pains... yeah it just makes no sense to play Glennon in what will almost certainly be a tough year for the Pack.

Evans had a shot and we know what he can do in game situations. Try someone new please. See what Wilson does in game situations, if it isn't any better, then rotate the 2.

DECENT quarterbacks don't have to scramble. How often does Peyton Manning scramble? never. Tom Brady? never. Philip? surely you know the answer to that.

thats just retarded, you've obviously never watched any of the QBs you listed play if you think that...even the best Offensive Line is going to make mistakes and force the QB to move around and leave the pocket occasionally to avoid a sack and/or allow the receivers to get open

Those qb's you listed, although not very mobile, move extremely well in the pocket. They also have great offensive lines, which help. I don't get your point there, Steve Young and John Elway use to scramble all the time, so that right there goes against what you are saying. I think those two are more then decent qbs..

For a qb, it isn't about speed, it is about feeling pressure and the way they feel the pocket and move around it. Very few QBs are purely faster then defensive players, but they are smart with how they move and use their line.

Give me a break. Oline play like the last few posters have talked about will determine if this team gets better.

"State LB Ware academically suspended from school
John Ware

By James Henderson, PackPride.com

Posted: Today at 4:01 p.m.

NC State head coach Tom O'Brien announced today at his press conference that redshirt sophomore linebacker John Ware has been academically suspended from school.

"John Ware has been suspended from school," said O'Brien. "He's academically suspended. He's suspended. That doesn't mean he's out. He has to clear up some things academically, and he's going to come back."

A redshirt sophomore, NC State moved Ware to safety from outside linebacker prior to spring practice, but early in fall practice he was back at linebacker.

Very instinctive and athletic, he tallied 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble during his redshirt freshman campaign, mainly playing on special teams and on obvious passing downs.

The 5-foot-11, 205 pounder was expected to battle for playing time at linebacker, but it may have been an uphill battle. Nate Irving, Ray Michel, and Robbie Leonard are listed as the starters, and sophomore Thomas Barnes is in the mix as well as freshmen Audie Cole, Dwayne Maddox, Sterling Lucas, and William Beasley.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Ware was not present this weekend for the Wolfpack's Media Day."

just stop throwing interceptions... granted it's going to happen, and it's not always Daniel's fault, but there were a few times when I had no idea what could have been possibly going through his mind when he let the ball go.

You can probably attribute this to O-line play, if they can keep the pressure off better, I think we'll see less turnovers.

well lets just hope that SC's O-line plays like shit and their QB is running for his life the whole game throwing picks.... The thing that scares me is that their D is better and our O-line rolls in already looking at an uphill battle...

We need positive turnover ratio, dammit...

^^Agreed, but it's not even so much the interceptions. I can live with some from time to time. It's those damn pick six's. We'll be in the red zone in position to score and he'll chunk it and it gets run back. Those swings of a potential 14 points are huge and kill me! See the NC game from last year.

I like the move to redshirt Glennon. We are picked to finish last so there is no real pressure, except from the nutso fringe fanbase who are delusional... Let the kid learn the offense for a year, get stronger and we'll have an extra year from him later on when TOB has more of his players in place.

I agree, and I think everyone else does it was just the idiot talking about how a decent QB should be faster than the defensive. Evans is obviously no NFL star but he is fairly atheletic and had some pretty decent scrambles last season...he's not a great runner, he's not great at feeling pressure, but the kid will hang in there and take a hit. He will step up in the pocket, and he will scramble better than a lot of guys can.

Its not about being fast; its about being able to feel the pressure, taking a couple of steps to avoid it, and making the pass. You dont really have to be faster than anybody, good pocket passers just know how to evade with a couple steps.

1. That's where me stating that most DTs run sub 5.0s and DEs running 4.6s and 4.7s come into play...there are not many QBs that run sub 4.6 and it really has nothing to do with them being a good or even quality QB

2. Evans can outrun the slowest players on the defensive side of the ball, thanks for watching games.

also remember that when a defensive end, lets pretend he runs a 5.0 40, is running at the qb nearly unblocked is moving at full speed... of course the qb isnt going to be able to fully get away from said DE because he has to accelerate first... unless your last name is vick you arnt going to be able to get away from the d line consistently

yes and using that same logic, a QB only has to take 2-3 steps in a direction perpindicular to the oncoming path of the D line men within the pocket to avoid the pressure.

this is true unless said lineman is coming at the qb from the side... a lot harder to see the guy coming... also bottom line is Evans should be able at this point in his career to spot a huge fuckin guy (brian mahoney voice in boondock saints) coming right at him regardless of the angle

Lol, you point out that Evans runs a 4.7 40 (you obviously had a pretty easy time finding that)...but you still think he can't outrun the slowest player on the defense? Be serious.

You obviously aren't one of our young bright NC State engineers but a few guys explained the simple "physics" involved in a QB "outrunning" a def. player of any stature. Which brings us back to point number one, you don't have a clue. If your QB is having to outrun defensive players then maybe you need to look at upgrading the rest of the team before worrying about a QB upgrade?

I don't understand this philosophy:
"That's fine he is red-shirted. We are already picked to finish last so let's just wait until next year when maybe everyone is better and then he can play"

If everyone thought that way, there would be no point to go to the game. Might as well not even play, just start preparing for next year.

TOB and his staff want to win. The fans want to win. Put the player on the field that gives you the best chance to win NOW. You can believe that is what the coaching staff are doing. Obviously Glennon was not the best man on the field for this year. TOB already stated that he had not adjusted as fast as he would have liked.

Who's to say Glennon will even start next year? They will go through the spring and fall and will be competing for the position again. Likewise, in another year or 2 we will have new QB recruits who may even be competing for the position.
That's why a lot of guys transfer. Remember when Burke came in, everyone was gungho about him starting and that he was AWESOME. Now he is transferring b/c it just didn't work out.

"Who’s in the lead for his services? That was another popular question Saturday. The University of South Carolina and Clemson haven’t offered yet, but one reporter suggested they might.

"So, Sterling, did you grow up a Gamecock fan?" he said with a smile.

Lucas looked at the man and answered back with a slight smile of his own.

"Not really," he said. "I’m not really a Gamecock fan. I’m a football fan.""

"you point out that Evans runs a 4.7 40 (you obviously had a pretty easy time finding that)...but you still think he can't outrun the slowest player on the defense?"

he obviously can't, thats part of the reason he took 22 sacks last season (the other part is the shoddy O Line)

"a few guys explained the simple "physics" involved in a QB "outrunning" a def. player of any stature"

It's not like he has to beat them in a 40 yard dash man, you can move in more than one direction on the football field

"If your QB is having to outrun defensive players then maybe you need to look at upgrading the rest of the team before worrying about a QB upgrade?"

Even the best offensive line will break down occasionally and the QB has to make smart decisions (throwing the ball away or scrambling) instead of just taking sacks all the time or throwing pick 6s. Certainly our O-Line play needs to improve, but you can't just put all the responsibility for shitty Quarterbacking on the Offensive Line, the QB bears some responsibility

this conversation is retarded

evans isn't horrifically slow in a foot race, he just doesn't have the vision find receivers while running full tilt

the drunk sorority girls at the top of section 15 could see that

Evans is garbage... and dont give me that "you dont know any better than TOB" bullshit otherwise theres no point in talking about sports if you cant second guess players/coaches decisions. They do make mistakes sometimes you know? I am sure the coaches/GMs who drafted Ryan Leaf, Brian Bosworth, and Tony Mandarich and let Brett Favre leave Atlanta and the college coaches that didnt recruit Jerry Rice, Brian Westbrook etc "knew better than you" as well.

In my opinion Evans is pure shit
