So, the companies I found seem small, but I'm well qualified technically to do entry level work for them. I emailed my resume to each but got no response. One is in Cary, the other in Charlotte, and are both in advanced technology for the military. (if you're intrigued and may know where I'm trying to go then by all means PM me )
So, guess I cold call now? The places don't have any open job opportunities listed, but each do hire BS degrees from time to time and I have a ton of experience in their technical areas. My professor said this:
Quote : | "Peter, I would give it 1-2 weeks after emailing before you call – with summer schedules folks may be vacationing and just not have had a chance to review your materials quickly. I agree that in a small company, a phone call might be more effective in getting a chance to talk to someone personally." |
I emailed both on either Thursday or Friday of last week, so maybe beginning of next week I'll call.6/30/2010 2:47:11 PM |

gosh i don't know how people can be unemployed for so long and stay sane. as a recent graduate i want to die not having a job lined up but there are people who have been unemployed for months and YEARS and people who are way more qualified than i am that have been laid off.
my cousin, a duke grad with a unc mba has been unemployed a year and a half and keeps getting interviews and then not hired. i worry about him because i think he is honestly at his wit's end. and i would be too. i'd be so fucking depressed. i'm depressed just having to move back home and having applied for a bajillion jobs and being rejected from all of them (or just not hearing back at all...its super rock bottom that i get excited for rejection letters considering most places don't even bother to respond anymore)
but hopefully i can find a table waiting job or bartending or nannying or retail when i move back. i'm not unwilling to work low level jobs. and i agree w/ what jbrick said:
Quote : | "To that article, I'd also say that working a job like that (barista at a coffee shop or sales clerk at a retail place, or even a waiter or bartender) just puts you in contact with people who have jobs or opportunities. I can't tell you how many job offers I got during law school while I was bartending....and they all game at the bar. Even if you can't move up in the company where your low-level job is, you can still meet people out there that have openings.
Gotta network mang!" |
i met more lawyers when i waited tables before law school and while working retail during law school than i did at stupid little school "networking" functions. i don't have a job obviously, but it is good networking. or can be. i mean you can use a "negative" and turn it into a positive since these type of jobs expose you to tons of people.7/5/2010 2:55:22 PM |

I had one hit from the company in Cary, as my professor was on the PhD defense committee for a guy that works at the company (discovered this via LinkedIn). Email to the professor to introduce me and the guy hit me back with an email. He hasn't responded since, but I'll give it a few days I suppose. That was on July 1st after all
I called the company in Charlotte about their fail online career page, and the secretary gave me her personal email address to send my resume to. That's at least a person, so we'll see where that goes. Maybe I'll call in a week and see where that's going.
Waiting for replies to career emails makes time so much slower. I feel like these happened weeks ago 7/5/2010 3:37:33 PM |

Not to mention, to some potential networking people, the fact you are willing to suck up your pride and work a job like that while looking for something else can say a lot about your personality and work effort. As opposed to the people who have been unemployed for over a year and continue to be simply because they cant find a job they want to do rather than a job period. Not saying all people are like that, but lets face it there are a lot of them out there. 7/5/2010 3:41:55 PM |

What up you sorry mother fuckers
I have a couple of questions about unemployment benefits
I signed up a few weeks after being laid off, and finally got around to filing yesterday. I also sent in my paperwork for direct deposit yesterday. I log in to the ESC site today to check on things and I see two items under my payment history where there were previously none, for the weeks ending 6/26 and 7/3. So because it takes 10+ days to process the DD paperwork, should I be expecting paper check(s)?
And regarding keeping a record of jobs I'm applying for: I'm sending out resumes left and right, but I haven't kept a detailed list or anything. Is some dude gonna beat down my door and demand to see my job search diary? 7/8/2010 5:58:27 PM |

^^I've been unemployed since March and so far no one has asked for a record of jobs that I've applied to. Most are through various websites so I could probably track down applications if I had to, but they don't seem to care very much.
And yes, you'll probably get paper checks. It took them about a month to set up my direct deposit, put it in someone else's account and then switched me back to the debit card which I still use now.
That being said, I have an interview tomorrow morning! Cross your fingers for me, tww ] 7/8/2010 6:15:05 PM |

Keep a detailed list--print off the emails you send w/ your resume attached, your Monster search/application history, any confirmation you receive back. Do it. I've been unemployed since October and after my severance ended began collecting UEB in November. I was finally up for my first extension this past month, and was approved. However, I've also taken on a nannying job (not under the table--they are taking out taxes) so I've been reporting my earnings and receiving the difference in UEB.
I was flagged. Last Thursday I received a letter from the ESC requesting my presence today at 3:30 (yep, that's right...I went TODAY) and they wanted my work history search report. I had names and contact info (phone numbers or emails), the week, or in some cases actual day, I talked to or wrote them about a position, and when and what company I applied for. SO...it CAN happen. And by the looks of the line I was in at 3:30 this afternoon it happened to a good 100 other people last week and who knows how many were there before me.
In other words... YES. document your search. I had a few weeks where I didn't find any new postings online for a position that I was qualified for and in my salary range. I was very nervous about today just because I didn't have those few weeks covered.
I was told I was more than likely flagged b/c I had just received an extension, having reported earnings from a side job, and not using their job search site to find employment (I use Monster, CareerBuilder and Craigslist...and it could've been just one of those that flagged me or none at all--you can get this letter w/o being flagged, but you're more likely to get it if you are flagged). Their website for jobs actually tracks how long you are on the website and what you search.
I've known 6 people in the past year that have been collecting unemployment--7 including myself. 3 of us were audited (one 1 year ago, one a month ago, and one being me). 2 of us at the time of an extension, and both of us had been reporting side earnings.
So there's your odds.
Keep a record. It could happen to you.
and it's advice like that ^ that made me think I was in the clear no matter what happened to me. Even though I did have it, I've been sweating for a whole week because of this damn letter and b/c of my few weeks with no results. So yeah...be militant and document your shit. Just b/c it doesn't happen to everyone, it could still happen to you...and it's not fun.

Is it normal to get an interview to a company through Kelly Scientific, have the interview go alright, and then both KSR and the company ignore you and not return your calls or emails afterward? They wasted so much of my time and gas only to ignore me. 7/9/2010 10:12:05 PM |

Some big corporations have shitty practices. You could try calling the main office number and asking for the boss of whoever interviewed you and just ask for an update on what your status is as a candidate for the position. If he tells you that they have already notified the next round of candidates/whatever, you'll know that you didn't get it. 7/9/2010 10:38:25 PM |

So we'll see...but after waiting for months for something this definitely gives me a boost of confidence as I was starting to wonder. Maybe it'll turn out and I won't have to worry anymore.
Though with my nannying gig I wasn't really going to have to worry until August. 7/10/2010 10:54:46 AM |

I just made this offer via PM, but really, it's for anyone: If you're willing to relocate west, lemme know. I'm ardently jobhunting for myself, but don't mind one bit keeping my eyes peeled for other people - I typically don't narrow my searches, but instead choose to view all available postings.
An email would be very good, so that I can copy/paste postings to you, or use the 'email to a friend' function.
The area where I'm looking is basically the Front Range between Colorado Springs and Cheyenne, and then I'm also including Laramie. 7/12/2010 7:20:37 PM |

It does seem depressing when even restaurants don't want you. But don't get your hopes down. Restaurants especially are getting flooded with applications because it's a great schedule to have when looking for a job (typically not an 8-5 job so you can go on any interviews that come up).
With ~2.5 years waiting tables/hostess experience, I went to several restaurants (about 10) and got turned down by all except one, and this was when the economy wasn't as crappy. I've also looked for other odd jobs around town, like receptionist work and making fishing lures. Hotels always need night staff and many doctors need answering services for evening callers. These are all good jobs to have when you're waiting for the bigger fish to come! 7/16/2010 8:26:19 AM |

I'm approaching 22 months of being unemployed from full-time steady work. I've had a few temp/seasonal jobs that lasted anywhere from 1 week to about 5 weeks. I've had a couple of job offers that were taken away from me once they saw my credit. Credit has pretty much sucked since I've been unemployed. And I had one job offer that I accepted and would have started about 3 weeks later, but during that time they called me and told me the position was no longer available since they were having to lay people off and could no longer afford to fill the position.
Oh well. Right now I think I've got a decent chance to get a job with Spirit since I've got a couple of contacts in the particular area in which they are hiring. So here's hoping... 7/16/2010 9:59:38 AM |

I am not unemployed, but I interviewed for another job last Thursday. Wasnt sure how it was going, but at the end he has for my last two yearly evaluations. So maybe that is a good sign? I was sorta nervous because I havent had a real interview like that since my interviews at the career center at State. The job I have right now I interviewed over the phone (was in Texas at the time) and the only other interview was a couple months ago, again over the phone. 7/17/2010 11:15:51 PM |

I wouldn't take it as anything other than face value. The round you are in is likely "face interview plus end of the year evaluations" so he was going to ask for the reports anyway. That or he was positive enough with the interview to think "you might pass onto the next round" and decided to ask for the EotYEs, whereas another candidate might have put him off in the interview and been eliminated right there.

I dont think he would of asked for additional docs if he new I had no chance...might still not get it and after the interview I am more meh because it wasnt what I thought the position was going to be. It would be a nice raise, but there are some things about it that I am not sure about...luckily for me, I have a perm job so I dont have to accept any position.....good luck to the unemployeed!
One good thing about most fed jobs (high up ones not the case), you only really do one interview and not a half a dozen like the private sector. Heck, the job I have now was over the phone (was in another state), and they offered me the job and the first time I talked to them in person was my first day at work. Of course, feds have a one year probation where you can be fired for any reason at all.

i know that companies are busy - but if i come in for an interview and you tell me specifically what kind of time line you'll be on to let me know about the job - it'd be nice if you actually let me know about the job.
it's so frustrating interviewing for positions and then never hearing anything back - even after following up and checking in.
