"I personally thought the Cersei / Littlefinger scene was one of the weaker ones of the episode. Completely out of character for Littlefinger, but they kind of altered his character that way last season already so I didn't worry about it too much. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things anyway."

Exactly. At no point does little finger ever allow himself to be at the mercy of anyone. He is to clever for that.

It diminishes his character greatly.

The problem with this kind of episode is that it was all dialogue, and the only character/actor with interesting dialogue is the dwarf. Everyone else is unremarkable.

So, we had an hour of mostly generic characters telling us what was happening rather than showing us what was happening. This seems like a common problem with TV shows based on voluminous literature. The director doesn't have a free hand to visually tell a story well because they are trying to stick to the books.

I almost loled at how bad the wolf CG was.

I forgot some of what happened last season and I wasn't going to spend hours researching, cancelled hbo because of the first episode.

had it for last season's True Blood and Life and Times of Tim. right now, there is nothing else on HBO except for Eastbound & Down.

I'll get HBO again when TB starts up again, and I'll watch Game of Thrones all in one weekend so I can fast forward through the boring shit.

Getting HBO for True Blood and cancelling it after 1 episode of Game of Thrones is deserving of a credibility watch thread.

^wife forces me to get HBO for True Blood... the same reason I'm forced to get showtime for Shameless...

like i said earlier, i'll watch game of thrones season 2 over a weekend. it's just that i had extremely high hopes for episode 1.

yeah, people always bitch about early in the season episodes of serialized shows being slow. They're laying a groundwork for the awesome shit to come.

i read that the wolves were filmed behind a green screen, enlarged, then implanted into the scene. i'll have to watch it again, but i remember thinking the wolves looked good, but looked out of place.

I guess I understand cancelling after the slow start of season 2. I mean, I cancelled my HBO subscription after the first episode of the Wire...way to much dialogue.

I thought the wolf looked fantastic. Great first episode. I will watch again (per usual) to make sure I didn't miss anything in dialogue. Love this series...never read the books, but I do have the first that I will eventually get in to. Bastard killing and the implication of killing the infant was a little much for me emotionally, but that's just me. And more Joffrey bitch slapping please.

I highly suggest watching it on HBOGO with the interactive stuff on. Its cool stuff with short videos explaining parts of the episode along with maps and descriptions of characters you may not be able to quite follow.

Can someone explain to me why they went around killing all of the children? I haven't read the books and sometimes these storylines are hard to follow.

They want to get rid of any heirs to Robert's throne, because Joffrey/Tommen/Myrcella were all born out of incest between Cercei and Jamie Lannister and therefore can't be heirs to the throne.

One thing that struck me odd was when Stannis' Maester took a sip of the poisoned wine. In the books, doesn't he drink it after Melisandre drinks it (and sees that nothing happened to her?)

yes

Quote :
"Cressen prepares a crystal that he plans to put in Melisandre’s drink, but then oversleeps. He enters the Great Hall to find Stannis and his bannermen at the feast table. Cressen is mocked by Melisandre and Patchface because he tripped, but is given a seat by Ser Davos. Davos tells the maester that Melisandre has seen victory in her flames, but Cressen tells the red woman that her god holds no power here. Cressen then proposes a toast. Melisandre drinks and remains unaffected. She then invites Cressen to drink as well. The ruby at Melisandre’s throat glows, and she tells Cressen that R’hllor does have power here. Maester Cressen drinks and dies immediately. "

In the show it almost seemed sacrificial. Not sure why they made the change.

I disagree. Littlefinger's whole life he has been bullied physically. Its part of what drives him. Ned has him in a chokehold last season outside the brothel. Ned's older brother beat him up back in the day.

The Queen is another bully.

^^ To me, the problem with it was that book-Petyr is extremely subtle and non-confrontational from what I remember, very similar to Varys almost.

^ That's part of the story sort of so I won't get into too much detail. I'm planning to re-watch the episode tomorrow with a friend who missed it and I plan to look for something when I do. I was really hoping there was a visual clue with the ruby glowing but for some reason I don't remember that happening. Does anyone else remember? Did they show it or just skip that entirely?

That's cool. I always watch using hbogo now, but never have used the interactive features. I'll give it a shot when I watch it for the second time.

And more on the wolves....not only were the wolves fantastic, but I was thinking why in the heck didn't Alan Ball do that with the wolves in True Blood.

Second episode is solid. Ghost definitely looks better. Really interested to see where they go with the Craster storyline, whether they start delving into book 3 or remain on book 2.
