Hard to prepare for everything. The GSU coaches from last year that ran the option left and they brought in the staff from SJSU. All reports were that GSU was shifting to a mix of the pistol and spread offense(what the coaches ran at SJSU). So our DC had to prepare for potentially 3 offensive schemes and then they came out and basically ran no spread and really only ran the option.

Our scheme is a 4-2-5 which is geared to stop the spread/pass happy offenses. So it's a bad match-up and our DC had limited information on what to prepare for. So we probably spent a little bit of time on the triple option(mainly because we knew they might run it and because we eventually play GT), but the first half you could definitely tell we were surprised that they reverted back to basically only running the option.

So we're rolling out several young guys on D, we were caught off guard to some extent with the offense they ran, and it was a bad match-up schematically, and in the second half we still adjusted and only gave up 6 points.

I've heard it a hundred times and still can't understand that reasoning. No TOB wasn't a great coach, but am I the only person that remembers we went to 3 straight bowl games, and won the 2 he coached in, before Doeren came in and lost every ACC game? I know the excuse is TOB had shitty recruits, but a GOOD coach would have been able to win at least one ACC game with them, and beat Richmond by more than a last second field goal. If we had been a only a 2-4 win team before Doeren, that's one thing, but blaming last year on TOB is ridiculous.

Anyway this isn't last year. I saw nothing impressive from the coaching Saturday, but I'm biased and admit that because I haven't been happy about Doeren as a hire from day one. However, with our schedule, it will be hard to really make a call on his coaching credibility based on this season until we get past these first 4 cupcake games and see how we can stack up against a credible opponent.

Maybe...maybe TOB wins one or two more games that DD last year. So what? Then we're 4-8 or whatever and still shitty. You can't seriously believe we would've been good with TOB at the helm last year. He had two great QBs during his time at NC State...and the best he could muster was a fucking 5-3 record in the ACC. That was the high point of his tenure.

^^TOB had 2 NFL(one SB-winning) QBs in succession at NC State and still never really made any noise nationally. I'm sure TOB and his scheme might have won an ACC game or 2 with Pete Thomas, but we likely wouldn't have made a bowl game last year and I'd rather have 1 horrible year and start building something that has potential to be above-average(6 wins is average) in a couple of years than constantly set our team's ceiling at 7 or 8 wins.

Oh I remember Pete Thomas, however I still think with the schedule we had last year, not winning at least 6 was pathetic. I even said TOB wasn't a great coach, but I do think he was a good coach with poor recruitment skills. I'm just saying you can't blame the year on him. There were too many coaching/play calling errors last year to put sole blame on Pete Thomas, Brandon Mitchell, or any other sub par talent. Countless times on 3rd and long calling a run or throw behind the line of scrimmage play last year. Not to mention that fake punt, even if that had work it was stupid.

You're also saying that good QB's made TOB look good. Obviously Doeren only looks good with a nfl quality QB as well, or we would have been better last year. In my opinion a great coach can work with mediocre talent and make it look good, and take good talent to great. As of now, I think DD can recruit talented players, however, I'm not sold that he can coach them to its greatest potential. That's what I want to see for credibility.
