expand the field to 6 teams, give the power 5 champions a guaranteed berth if they are ranked within the top 10 (ensuring something like a 7-6 UCLA or 8-5 VT can't sneak in). odds are at least 4 of them will be ranked 1-5 anyhow. in the event a power 5 champion does not gain an auto berth, the next highest ranked team will get the 5th berth (and so on, if there are multiple upsets). the top two teams as selected by the committee get a bye. #3 plays #6, and #4 plays #5. these games will be held at the New Years 6 bowls, but will be played the first Monday after the New Years 6 bowls (with at least 1 week in between). the reason?

the #6 seed will be selected from the field of the New Years 6 bowls based on performance. this will enable matchups of, say, a top 15 Boise State vs a #7 Ole Miss or a 11-1 non-conference division winning SEC team versus the PAC 12 loser, or, hell, the two teams "tied" for the Big XII title to prove their belonging in the playoff. of course, there should also be a requirement that a conference must declare an undisputed champion to begin with, but this is just an example from this season's so called clusterfuck.

adding the two teams pushes back the championship by another week, but expands the field and gives greater access to the playoff, and still allows the New Years 6 bowls to keep their meaning.
