Officials clearly missed an overloaded side of the defense ont hat kick. Teams can't have more than six on either side of the snapper. Atl had eight.

Despite how amazingly shitastic our season has been don't be surprised if we are right back in it next week during our bye. Atlanta plays Cleveland and New Orleans plays Baltimore both are likely to lose putting the division leader at 4-7. That is so sad haha 11/16/2014 4:26:23 PM |

I would've like to see JStew get a few more carries, maybe he's not 100% yet?
The offense really needed to punch that long drive in the 1st quarter in, they've had trouble with that all season.
Every time the panthers lose by a missed 4th quarter field goal I'm flooded with disappointing Super Bowl memories. It's gotta be one of the worst ways to lose.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11890785/should-carolina-panthers-extend-cam-newton-week-11-takeaways-nfl?refresh=true
Quote : | "1. Carolina GM Dave Gettleman is the wild card when it comes to re-signing Newton.
Most of the league insiders I've spoken with think the Panthers will re-sign Newton before he becomes a free agent in March 2015. There is at least some thought, however, that if Gettleman were serious about building around Newton, the Panthers would have done more to help the QB this season. Instead, Carolina entered 2014 with less reliable weaponry at wide receiver and with much less talent along the offensive line. Newton hasn't had much chance for success.
Two executives said there's no doubt in their minds the Panthers would re-sign Newton to a rich contract if the team followed the pattern established before Gettleman was hired in January 2013. A contract negotiator said Carolina has been widely known for setting the market when paying its own players -- to the point that other teams hoped to get deals done before the Panthers could change the dynamics by raising prices.
"They set a new standard when they signed DeAngelo Williams, Charles Johnson and Thomas Davis, and even when they did Ryan Kalil's deal," this negotiator said. "When their guys hit free agency, they go out and pay them. They paid Jordan Gross, too. I would perceive those moves to be owner-driven, but I do not know how their current front-office guys might approach things."
Under Gettleman, the Panthers used the franchise tag to keep defensive end Greg Hardy, but that doesn't necessarily mean the team was reluctant to pay Hardy on a long-term deal. Former GM Marty Hurney used the tag to keep Kalil (2011), Julius Peppers (2009) and Jordan Gross (2008). Those players signed longer-term deals after getting the tag. "I think they have to sign Newton and they are going to," the negotiator said.
Another negotiator said he thought the Panthers would sign Newton to a deal along the lines of the one Cutler signed. That deal averages $18.1 million per year and has $54 million in guarantees. This negotiator said the decision would be straightforward because the team can win with Newton.
An agent said the Hurney-era Panthers "for sure" would have re-signed Newton to a lucrative deal, but the agent was less certain about Gettleman's approach.
As the chart below shows, Newton's career through 59 starts lines up almost exactly with Cutler in won-loss record and Total QBR through the same number of games. The chart includes all 13 QBs who made their first 59 starts beginning in 2006 or later. Newton ranks sixth in QBR, but he would rank ninth at 46.5 without rushing plays -- something to consider for those who are fearful Newton's status as a dynamic runner could fade as his body breaks down. Newton has taken roughly twice as many hits as any other quarterback since 2011.
The Panthers could wind up making Newton the next Cutler -- a highly paid and highly talented quarterback whose production isn't consistent enough to maximize the investment. The comparison would be fairer to Newton if he enjoyed the kind of supporting cast Cutler has in place with Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Newton, still just 25, also has time on his side.
Bottom line: The smart money is that the Panthers will reach an extension with Newton. But it isn't the lock we might have expected entering the season, and there are some concerns in his early-career performance that might make the franchise think twice.

So basically that just says that the Panthers probably will re-sign Newton, but then again who knows because this is Gettelman and not Hurney.
We'd be crazy not to re-sign him. I know it's gonna cost a lot...but if you want a capable QB you gotta pay. That's just the market. 11/17/2014 1:14:35 PM |

as much shit as I give $cam, he's still the best we're gonna do without completely starting over and risking wasting a draft pick. even shit QBs like cutler are valued, and Cam has more talent, he just isn't getting decent coaching (and I really can't blame him given the lack of talent around him other than Kelvin).

I agree completely. I saw some stats talking about how many times he's been hit/touched/sacked this season and its insane. Not to mention receivers dropping balls all over the place. I wouldnt be surprised if they try to lowball Cam compared to what he thinks he is gonna get and be willing to let him walk if he demands too much. Then they will just turn around and say look at this past season he wasnt worth the amount he wanted and we cant give one player that much money if he isnt producting at a much higher level.
I think they get a deal done, but I also hope its a reasonable one. 11/17/2014 2:26:23 PM |

I remember reading a while back how when Gettleman was with the Giants in the front office, their philosophy was to never spend a first round pick on an OL. I'm too lazy to look up the truth behind that. But geez, you gotta start somewhere. If we don't get an o-lineman with the first or second pick then Cam is doomed.
I think one reason Cam takes so many hits is because he holds on too long to the ball. Of course half of that reason could be because his receivers aren't getting any separation

Damn, I actually like Avant. Guess Philly Brown is moving on up.
Maybe it's the optimist in me, but as bad as this team looks, they're really not that far away from being good. Assuming Cam climbs out of his funk, we need to do three things this offseason: 1. Sign/draft a legit LT and move Bell back to RT (where he doesn't completely suck)
2. Sign/draft a SS that can actually run and cover to replace Harper
3. Sign/draft a pass rusher. The defense's biggest problem this year isn't the secondary; it's the deplorable pass rush.
All that seems pretty reasonable. Adding another good WR and CB couldn't hurt, but it's not nearly as pressing. Of course, us being good is all dependent on Cam not sucking. 11/18/2014 12:38:15 PM |

Right. Last year, everything clicked. The secondary full of journeymen ended up being solid. Especially given the really strong front 7. Seems like we went all in on the strategy again...secondary full of cheaper veterans and journeymen while franchise tagging Hardy. Hardy gets suspended. This year's secondary is worse than 2013's. And, defensively, things snowballed.
Offensively, we knew the OL was gonna be worse. It got worse in the offseason and little was done to remedy those losses up front. Losing a vet like Steve Smith hurts, but the WR position isn't significantly worse than it was in 2013 (that's not saying much). Sure they've dropped a few passes. But the WRs dropped passes last year too. 11/18/2014 1:11:45 PM |
