Though I had taken all the undergrad geotechnical courses you'd take for a concentration in geotech, and I led a team on a project in designing a retaining wall that touched on most everything the senior design project for geotech would hit on (I even got bonus points for doing design considerations and calculations for the soil type the wall was sitting on, which was in the instructions but no other groups did it), and though I have done a lot of work that is exactly in line with what is being done at this firm (as I used geotech information in some of the projects I did at work) I was still told that I had no experience or education/training in geotech, that due to this I would be offered less than a person who concentrated in geotech, and the fellow on the phone implied pretty directly that he wasn't confident in my ability to learn new design methods.

All this because it says Civil Engineering - Structural Concentration on the resume. This entirely has to do with the fact that the people making the decisions there are unfamiliar with state's Civil program. I god damn well hate it when I go through the trouble of describing my work and my education and what I did and school and have it fall on deaf ears and get told that all my experience isn't worth anything (so here's a pay offer in the bottom quartile of entry-level in this market with no benefits for 3 months and no extended benefits for at least one year to eighteen months).

I think I god damn well am going to go work for the government and help work on beautiful seafaring machines that blow up people with deadly efficiency.

This guy would've been my boss. It's a small company. Only one guy there graduated in civil at state and that was over 8 years ago. No HR department there. That's why I am finding this completely outrageous.
