Jesus what a terrible offseason.
Penny is gone, maybe good, maybe not. Traded a promising pitcher Hawksworth for Ryan fucking Theriot and then traded possibly the best fielding shortstop and fan favorite Brendan Ryan for a minor leaguer. Our two signings were Gerald Laird, a 50 year old backup catcher, and Lance Berkman, a possibly over the hill 1B where we currently have the best player in baseball.
WTF Mozeliak? 1/14/2011 9:39:24 PM |

[Edited on February 14, 2011 at 8:27 AM. Reason : a 10-year contract is ridiculous. That would ruin the payroll paying him that long] 2/14/2011 8:16:46 AM |

If he wants $30 Million and 10 years, yes. Sad but true. $30 million is ridiculous. Texas was awful until they got rid of ARod and some of his outrageous contract. STL was a good team before Pujols and will be fine without him. $30 Million can get several good pieces, not an aging one who's an injury away from not playing.
What baseball fan would want their team with an average payroll to do that for a guy 32 next January?2/23/2011 2:11:24 PM |

Honestly I dont think it will take 300 million over 10 years to sign him if he actually wants to stay in St. Louis. I'd front load the shit out of it and pay him like the best player in baseball, but give him the 10 years. He said years ago he'd take less money if it meant signing other talent and competing for championships. IIRC the cardinals only offered him 8 years this off season, which is why you could believe him saying "its not about the money".
They can't fuck this up and lose him. They haven't really made many good moves in several years since the GM went to Cincy. There really isn't much on this team besides top heavy pitching and Pujols...and it showed in crunch time last year.

Holliday? Rasmus? How could you say that? I think Colby is a future stud if he and La Russa can get along.
I thought things were looking decent before the Waino injury. Wainwright, Carpenter, Westbrook, Garcia, and Lohse is a good rotation if Lohse could regain his 2008 form. 2/23/2011 4:53:27 PM |
wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
IMO Holliday is a little overrated. Take Pujols off the team I don't think he bats as well, and he's basically replaceable (to say the least) as a fielder. Rasmus is a good young player, but who outside of that do we have? Our pitching rotation last year was good but it just took a huge hit. Plus, if our starters couldn't go 7 or 8 innings we had a damn hard time winning the game. Franklin was decent, but we have nobody at middle relief.
Hopefully Carp regains his form this year after an off year last season. The rest of the guys need to pitch all season like they did early on. We'll see. 2/23/2011 10:04:16 PM |

Last year really was depressing to watch. I can't recall a team ever just quitting midway through the season like we seemed to. It's like one day we were awesome, and the next day we were worthless.
And IMO, we need to keep Pujols, whatever the cost. This guy is arguably the greatest player to ever play baseball. I mean, that is huge. Having him alone will give fans a reason to come out to the ballpark on a regular basis, and it will give other players (Holiday) a reason to become a Cardinal. 2/24/2011 12:29:58 PM |
wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
^agreed. After the all-star break, we had that series sweep of Cincy and looked freakin awesome doing it to take the lead, but IIRC we lost like 8 of the next 10 (something absurd) and never looked back.
Gotta keep Pujols too. 2/24/2011 4:03:04 PM |

Not at all man. The bullpen wasn't that bad. 3.73 ERA 6/16 in the NL and we had the least amount of blown saves in the Majors at 10 and we had the 2nd highest save rate at 76%. Franklin did ok, McClellan (2.27 ERA) is superb at his setup role, Motte (2.24 ERA) had a really good year as well. Boggs (3.61) made good strides aqd Reyes did his job getting out lefties.
In a nutshell, I'd say timely hitting and the bottom of the order were the weaknesses. Ryan and Schumaker had down hitting years and Rasmus/Freese battled injuries causing us to play young unproven guys like Jay and Craig, who looked good for the future.2/24/2011 11:04:47 PM |

What a shitty played game by the Cards. Shouldn't have been close.
Pujols hits into 3 double plays. Holliday gets picked off at 2nd. Skip makes a bad play at 2B. Franklin blows it with 2 outs in the 9th.
0-1. Sigh. Carpenter gave up 2 hits in 7 innings. 3/31/2011 9:56:35 PM |

This looks surprisingly similar to last year. We can't score and we can't hold a lead. Throw in a sub .200 Pujols and we're looking like the cellar dwellers of the NL Central. 4/10/2011 12:01:03 PM |

On a plus side it likes Jaime is legit. 15 innings, 1 earned run in 2 starts. Future still looks good for the rotation provided Wainwright, Lohse, and Carpenter can stay healthy. Lohse has looked good in his first 2 starts.
Priority 1 as it should have been already is to see if Motte is closer material or we need to look elsewhere. 4/10/2011 11:00:48 PM |

Haven't seen the team hit like this in ages. Most of the lineup hitting over .300. Looks like La Russa's angry talk with the media about them not hitting worked.
Who would have thought Carpenter would be our worst starter at this point?

This is fucking humiliating and ridiculous:
March 31st: Up 3-2 in the 9th inning vs SD, lose 5-3. April 8th: Up 4-3 in the 9th inning vs SF, lose 5-4. April 9th: Up 2-1 in 9th inning vs SF, lose 3-2. April 17th: Up 1-0 in 9th inning vs LA, lose 2-1. April 23rd: Up 3-2 in 8th inning vs CIN, lose 5-3. Tonight: Up 5-4 in 9th inning vs HOU, lose 6-5.
This is honestly more late-inning leads than I would expect a good team to give up in a whole fucking season, much less in their first 23 games. We could EASILY be a legitimate 18-5, but yet here we sit at 12-11, mired in mediocrity despite amazing hitting. It makes me not even want to watch fucking Cardinal games, because as soon as a reliever comes in and we're up by less than 4 runs, you might as well just fucking give them the L. FUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK
