rick barnes cousin is in one of my classes....he talked to his aunt last night and was told that State offered him an incredible contract: that would make him one of the top paid college coaches in the nation if not the top paid coach. Flame or bitch if you want but i have known this guy for a while, and do not doubt his since he is from Lenior, and Barnes has connections to that area. 4/6/2006 5:46:18 PM |

hey wolfAApack i thought State's admissions were getting tighter by the year. like closer to the 58% mark recently. not sure if it's true, though. i know that we have a record 15,236 applications this year, and they expect 4,254 to enroll. now hypothetically say one out of every two students that are accepted enroll here, that would make it an acceptance rate of 55.8%. not too bad considering we're a pretty large public school. i'm pretty sure it's a little higher though. last year there were 13,762 applications. that's a considerable jump, also i should add that 10,077 of this years applications are early-applications, meaning if they are accepted they must come here. 4/6/2006 5:50:38 PM |

Quote : | ""If Rick Barnes turns this job down," one source, a member of the UNC System Board of Governors, said late Wednesday. "it won't be because of the money."" |
Quote : | "McConnel said that Texas had no press conference or press release planned or "in process" for the men's basketball program as of late Thursday afternoon. But he said that doesn't necessarily mean that one isn't coming soon." |
Quote : | "Sources close to Barnes said Thursday that the coach is genuinely torn about his options. But they said that as long as the Longhorns follow through on their most recent promises, they will be surprised if Barnes leaves Austin.
"(N.C. State officials) know they can't out-spend Texas, so they're being smart about it," one source close to Barnes said. "They're offering him a whole lot of money, and that gets your foot in the door, but they're also tugging on his heart strings and playing to his ego. They obviously did their homework.
"They're focusing on what State can offer that even Texas can't offer -- come home, come to a place where they're passionate about basketball, and come to the only place where you can become a legend by going head-to-head with (Duke's) Mike Krzyzewski and (UNC's) Roy Williams.
"That's what has made this a difficult decision for Rick. I still think he's going to stay -- he just has too many great things going on (at Texas) -- but you never know. Until I hear (the final decision) from his mouth, nothing is certain." " |

Pack shunning Calipari?

(2) Fowler has become obsessed with landing Barnes and is failing to manage other facets of the potential search. (3) Fowler is trying to hide behind the fact that over a decade ago that UMass’ Marcus Camby admitted to accepting money from an agent " |

^most of that shit is just a culmination of the last three days of articles from Austin papers
latest Statefans Nation blog entry is interesting:
Quote : | " Fowler Ignoring Calipari!
StateFansNation has confirmed through four different sources that Lee Fowler has ignored multiple overtures from John Calipari’s representatives regarding the vacant NC State Head Coaching job.
Various representatives of Calipari have attempted to contact Athletics Director Lee Fowler both directly and through various highly-placed NC State contacts since the job opened on Saturday night. We have confirmed that multiple phone calls made directly to Fowler and other employees of NC State’s Athletics Department have gone unanswered and un-returned this week.
One source connected very closely with Calipari has expressed that “John wants the job very badly.”
People close to the NC State side of the equation speculate some of the following alternatives: (1) Rick Barnes is in the bag and their is no reason to contact Calipari. (2) Fowler has become obsessed with landing Barnes and is failing to manage other facets of the potential search. (3) Fowler is trying to hide behind the fact that over a decade ago that UMass’ Marcus Camby admitted to accepting money from an agent.
We can’t imagine the outrage within the NC State community of Fowler fails to land Rick Barnes and ultimately hires a name of lesser stature than Calipari, one of the most successful college basketball coaches of the last 15 years.
Additionally, we can’t imagine the hypocrisy if Lee Fowler would use Camby’s tangential indescretion over a decade ago against Calipari. This Lee Fowler who was an assistant coach at Memphis State on a staff cited for multiple severe NCAA infractions at Memphis State in 1980s that led to the Tigers forfeiting games and vacating their Final Four appearance.
We will follow this very closely in the coming days. If NC State ultimately lands Rick Barnes, then this component of the coaching search will obviously be explained. If NC State doesn’t land Barnes and Fowler finds a way to whiff on Calipari, Fowler may want to consider getting his bags packed to move to Memphis to join Coach Cal.

i would be happy if either Barnes or Calipari came. both are very good coaches on the verge of truly being considered elite. Calipari recruits very well, and he is young enough to appeal to the younger generation (see his recent appearance on The Best Damn Sports Show Period). Barnes would have a lot of passion for ACC basketball, and everyone knows about his run in with Dean. if we get either of them, we'll be doing great, and shut up those sports talking heads that said we couldn't get a big name coach. 4/6/2006 7:14:49 PM |

^ Yes, oddly enough
Rumor has it that Wendell Murphy wants nothing to do with Calipari.... hence why we may not be pursuing him.
I'm also wondering if this whole Barnes taking so long thing isn't a smokescreen for us to be talking to someone else.....like Cal, so he doesn't think he's 2nd choice

i don't think we should hold that UMass thing against him. he was a young coach then. people make mistakes. just keep a close eye on your program and you should be fine. don't let the coach take the reigns, that's why we have an AD. he seems to have done quite well at Memphis in establishing them as a National Contender.

shit is so fucking transparent in recruiting these days, look at the fulmer and alabama shit, i know b-ball tends to be a bit dirtier than football with all the creepy shoe guys and NBA hawking high school kids...but worries of Calipari being dirty should have nothing to do with us hiring him
After reading that blog entry, if we don't get one of these two I will be truly disappointed, to miss on barnes i would have been momentarily pissed, and moved on, but now that it seems like Cal would come here, if we don't get one of the two it would be a smudge on Fowlers performance in my opinion....

You're right, and I fully agree.
2 things to consider:
1) Cal is known as being a little smug and slick. The Camby situation might stop us from pursuing him 2) Barnes is a better "fit" for NC State.4/6/2006 7:30:51 PM |
