A lot of times they'll refer to an arthroscopy as exploratory if they aren't certain there's a tear, it doesn't show up on an MRI for whatever reason, but they show all the signs of having a torn meniscus (for example). So, they'll do the surgery, see if there's a tear, and repair it while they're in there. I'm hoping it's that kind of situation.

look on the bright side: everyone here knew this was going to happen; at least it happened w/ plenty of time to recover.

also, i take partial responsibility for changing my status to something about lorenzo brown. i was begging for it, really.

it took a while off when our first year coach took a team that went 15-16 the previous year to the sweet sixteen.

don't you think?

I'm pretty sure players on other teams have injuries too.

If injuries are going to occur, better now than during or closer to the season, hopefully it's our only one.

Lewis will have to step-up in practice, and this may result in him being better prepared to back-up zo during the season.

it's certainly possible that TBDV has a good season... but to my knowledge we haven't seen anything out of him that indicates that he will.

he did dunk the ball like six times last season though.

Vandenburg could be productive the next two years. He's never going to be All-ACC obviously, but he's already shown he can dunk and block/contest shots.

The main thing he needs to prove is that he can rebound/defend and limit his turnovers/fouls.

I think the #1 thing he needs to improve is his agility along with athleticisim and strength. If he was a little more mobile he could be a good rebounder as 7'1 is huge in today's college game. His range as a rebounder was very limited because he simply didn't move well enough.

He had some productive minutes at the end of his sophomore year and it's certainly possible he's improved quite a bit since then. He's definitely a wild card, and if he makes the leap to a productive big man we'd be a scary team next season. His improvement will be especially critical though for his senior year (if he returns) as we're obviously going to be depleted on the front line after next year.

Agree with first statement, not as much with the second.

If Vandy wants to make an impact on this team, it's going to be at the defensive end. We have a good collection of guys that can score so our season isn't going to ride on him get double digit ppg. What we need is someone who can contest shots, block out, and come down strong with rebound.

As for areas to improve, you can't really improve athleticism. You either are athletic or you aren't. This has been beaten to death, but if you saw him in the dunk contest at the Red & White game freshman year, you'd know he's pretty athletic for a guy his size. I think he's already decently agile for a big man. I can't recall him having trouble moving up and down the floor the way Howell did before he lost all that weight. His strength has come a ways since he first enrolled but I wouldn't expect any significant improvements.

You already touched on his biggest improvement area: limiting fouls. If he wants to be a key part of the rotation, he needs to provide quality minutes rest for Howell and Leslie. Too many times have we see him come in, pick up two quick fouls, then sit right back down. That won't cut it anymore. He's done well getting into the offense by setting picks and throwing down the occasional lob, but it'll be interesting to see how he and de Thaey fit into Gottfried's scheme this year.

he can get up and down the floor fine, but he can't move laterally. That's a problem defensively and for rebounding.

The fact that's he's 7'1 and a poor rebounder should tell you something. His leg strength was terrible his freshman year, he had no base and no lift. His sophomore year it was much improved.

As for not being able to improve your athleticism, that's essentially what weightlifting, flexibility, etc are so that isn't true. You can run faster, jump higher, stretch farther. You peak at some point obviously, but look at CJ Leslie for example. He was obviously significantly more athletic this year as evidenced by the dunks he was throwing down in traffic last year. His freshman year he could barely get to the basket, let alone dunk in a game.

If you can't get more athletic, why do people even bother working out?

torn meniscus is definitely good news relative to what it could have been but it can still have some lingering effects like swelling, pain, and slight loss of agility.

My bigger concern would be if it effects him mentally or if it makes him think harder about going pro after this season.

It's definitely fortunate that we have Tyler Lewis and Rodney Purvis to ease some of the ballhandling responsibilities for Zobo this year. I'd be scared to go into the season with only one ballhandler who is coming off knee surgery.

Minor setback. Having injured my meniscus he should be full strength within 2 months. I was initially concerned this would be microfracture surgery.
