right, not everyone will say yes esp since it's a wedding on a Sunday out of town, but i tried to avoid this whole betting game from the get go. i wanted to invite 140 people. a nice SAFE number. fast forward from october to when there WAS 140 ppl on the guest list to now...and my mother has added people, in turn his mother has added people...and now that i've put it on paper and actually counted the number, i am freaking the fuck out.

we already did trim it down...we started out with a "if we had all the money in the world and could have everyone we know and love there" list--it was 320 people. we chopped it down to 140, a very very painful experience for our mothers, in september. by october we had the guestlist and had the plan.

it's b/c of this stupid shower recently that more ppl got added...my mom had put all these distant relatives on the guest list, so when i got it from my aunt i said "they aren't invited to the wedding, we can't invite this person to the shower" and this shitstorm spurred from there.

i keep hearing "oh auny betty won't come, don't worry. and neither will tim and joy, blah blah blah"

i'm not saying everyone is coming to this wedding, b/c i know that won't happen, but there won't be enough seats and people will have to stand outside b/c there's no standing room in the back of the chapel. which i don't want that...if a friend drives from raleigh, asheville, ohio, boiling springs lakes to be at our wedding, i want them to have a seat!

oh the wedding guests woes.

I'm glad both of our parents basically stayed out of the way with the guest planning. But I think that's mostly because my dad wanted to keep the cost down.

1 - Make a list of people who have responded favorably. Be sure to account for any +1 additions.
2 - Highlight names of people you could have waited to invite to form a “B” list.
3 - Confirm with the venue the absolute maximum number of guests allowed. Ask about squeezing an extra table into the room or one more chair at each table.
4 - Determine the precise number of people who will need to be cut.
5 - Make your decision from the names you highlighted.
6 - Prepare a speech. Decide what works best for your situation (limiting list last-minute to family and close friends? monetary hardships? the truth?) and tailor your key points to that end.
7 - Phone (do not email) each un-invited guest and explain the situation.
8 - Apologize and move on.

It's only 50 phone calls if you fail to get more seating with step 3. I'd definitely have the mothers do the calling, they were the ones that added the extra people.

that's terrible! aside from being stubborn as hell, my mom's a nice lady...and so is future mother-in-law. they just have too much love to go around and don't want to hurt feelings, whereas i'm cut throat slashing names left and right

i dread the day i have to plan a wedding. my mom's mom is like old southern blah blah blah so she planned my mom's whole wedding (which was way nice, but still) and my mom had no say. so my mom is like just dying to have a say in a wedding and i'm like, well, you better figure out a way to have another daughter quick because it isn't happening in mine.

Gonna graduate first so I can help pay for the wedding

Graduation will be next may or summer I (2010)(depending how the classes I need are scheduled)...but if I get a nice FT job that I like as much as I like my current PT job, I'll do a course or two or three a semester, which will push it back.

So probably fall 2012.

^My mother made me who I am. She knows that with her and dad contributing about $40, she has very little say, and she can't pull the traditional mom card. She is dying to do all she can, though...which means she's threatening to not help with food if we get married in the mtns like we want to because it's not possible to transport food for a wedding from raleigh to the asheville area.

let me just say this though...aside from the guest list, everything else about planning this wedding has been great. Justin and I haven't fought at all and he has been a big help in making decisions, assembling the save-the-dates, and going to vendor meetings (as much as he probably DOESN'T want his guys to know that), my mom has totally eaten up all my ideas that I like, my dress is gorgeous, our photographer is amazing, mother-in-law joined us when i found my dress and we had a girly weekend, and my dad has tagged along to a lot of the meetings too. And [vomit alert] I'm marrying Justin.

this is really my only headache...so overall, i'm happy
