^Pretty much. I did white gold because platinum was a bit too rich for my blood, plus Dawn's ring doesn't have a lot of visible metal as the pave diamonds go about 2/3 of the way around the band. But if you can afford it platinum is a nice touch.
I'm sure some discerning folks can tell the difference at a glance. I'm not one of them--platinum and white gold look pretty much the same to me. Though with platinum you're getting the actual color of the metal, whereas with white gold the rhodium plating may need to be renewed after some years to keep it from developing a yellow tint as it wears.
Beautiful ring, btw. Almost looks to me like a modern interpretation of an art deco style. 3/12/2012 9:47:16 AM |

well if her favorite team is playing, and she thinks jumbocam proposals are "aawwww" then you will be golden. But in general women now kind of snub that notion as not being intimate.
try thinking of all the great places you two have been, maybe take her on a walk there or bring a picnic, that way, years from now you guys have a nice place to return to remember your proposal and other good memories and you can visit for years to come and you will also have points for remembering "that one time ..." 3/13/2012 7:19:21 PM |

Unless platinum is cheaper than gold by spot. Doesn't mean you'll see that in the store but the difference should be minimal.3/13/2012 8:40:52 PM |

I will second this. There's a difference between liking surprises/being OK with being on the spot and liking that sort of thing. One of my friends fairly recently got engaged in the middle of a restaurant after a fancy dinner, followed by the whole restaurant clapping sort of shebang. When I told my bf how thoughtless that proposal seemed to me, he was kind of taken aback. He thought "what all girls wanted was to have everyone see their proposal," but that really isn't the case. It's one thing to share your moment with some people you care about, or even a fairly big crowd, and another thing entirely to just be the recipient of a completely cliche and thoughtless proposal. Jumbotron/restaurant proposals are the latter.3/13/2012 10:56:54 PM |

This thread is soooooo long!!!
Have multi-stoned rings been discussed?
I'm seriously considering incorporating sapphire into my "hopefully" future fiancé's ring...
What is the overall opinion? It's her and her mother's birthstone...I really think it will hit home with her but I'm kind of a traditionalist.
I think she would love it because they're both so close, but i would hate to be gaudy. 3/13/2012 11:52:23 PM |

It's actually more traditional for a ruby (red sapphire) to be a engagement ring. The whole ONLY DIAMONDS thing is a modren trend, not a historic one. 3/14/2012 10:53:04 AM |

I would love a jumbo tron/big screen sporting event proposal
but I opened this thread to post some advice: ladies, if you're going to post close-up pics of your hand with your new engagement ring, for the love of god make sure the hair on your fingers is under control (if this is an issue) 3/16/2012 10:15:36 PM |

hairy fingers? wtf!
Also, I always felt kind of bad for women when their boyfriends proposed at The Cheesecake Factory.
Sporting event proposals might be appropriate if you just won the $10,000 Bailey's diamond ring at an NCSU game. 3/16/2012 10:27:27 PM |

Lauren was so excited when I got her her engagement ring. I must have done right because she showed it to all her friends. Her only disappointment (as it sounded to me) was that we couldn't be engaged longer.
It's a solitaire from Zales set on white gold. It was beautiful.
As time goes on, she occasionally looks at upgrades and wants to remove the diamond and set it on sometime else to kind of upgrade. It sounds like a good idea to me... the idea of upgrading as the bond of relationship strengthens over time.
Anyway, if you can't afford anything extravagant now, you could always bumped it up as time goes by. I wouldn't get anything less than a carat for a diamond though. I've seen some girls shy away when attention is drawn to their engagement ring. 3/17/2012 2:10:23 PM |

CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
does she want the center stone to be 1.5 carats? or the whole thing (because halos have the diamonds that go around the main stone) be 1.5 carats.
what's going to be expensive is the quality of the main diamond. you obviously want something of value but it also might mean that you have to go down in size. my fiance said that he was originally looking at 1.5 carat diamonds for my center stone (i have a MaeVona Eorsa) but the quality of the stones he saw weren't exactly perfect. so they ended up getting a much higher quality stone that was 1.1 carats. size to me wasn't important - i told him it was completely up to him and he knew that i would be happier with a quality diamond than a big stone that had flaws.

CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
is her heart set on the halo? i only ask because you'll end up spending a good chunk of your budget on all those little diamonds that go around the main stone. this is just a personal opinion, but i rather put a good chunk of the money toward the big stone. but you know - to each is own 4/6/2012 10:23:55 AM |

This is possibly the coolest wedding ring I’ve ever seen. Perfect for geeks getting married.
From the creator:
I was bored and made this. Its a TARDIS based ring with a tension set 1CT Princess Cut center stone. The three round stones is the Police Box sign, the two sets of four baguettes symbolize the windows, and a small princess cut below that to symbolize the instructions found on the front of the Police Box.

Is she fixed on the 1.5 carats? probably not, she probably threw that out so i would go to the gum ball machine. 4/6/2012 11:52:18 AM |
