I try not look too far into all the sub genres, I guess I just look at it based on whether I like the music or not. I think my taste though is mainly into death metal and doom metal.

"full collapse tonight in charlotte"

my wife and I bought tickets the day they went on sale but I don't think we are going now :/

We are both really tired from work this week and are already going out of town this weekend. I'm thinking that driving to Charlotte just to see Thursday and then driving all the way back tonight isn't in the cards.

I feel so old. Just a year ago, we drove 2 separate times down to Atlanta for shows on weeknights where we left much later than we would probably leave Charlotte tonight and went to work the next day.

Super bummed today that we didnt go to the Thursday show last night. At the same time I am already exhausted at work and probably would have felt worse if I went. Oh well.

so Victory is releasing a BTBAM "best of" to try and squeeze the last $ they can from BTBAM before they are gone to Metal Blade.

The Best Of is actually going to have 5 previously recorded but unreleased tracks though. I have a couple guesses as to where those are coming from. One is that at least some of them are some covers they recorded for the anatomy disc but never released. The 2nd relates to something I heard in the studio. Jamie has a laptop you can use when you're there and one of the times I was using it I was browsing some of the random music he had on it and there were like 7 songs that were labeled as BTBAM. At this point he hadn't played any of The Great Misdirect for us yet so I thought "hey cool maybe this is unmastered TGM stuff."

It ended up being fairly early rough takes just to get initial drum tracking (no vocals, minimal 2nd guitar etc.) so I only listened through once and that was it. Later though, when he played TGM, I didn't recognize any of that stuff being on there so I always wondered whether that was mislabeled or some set of songs they recorded and scratched for some reason. This might be the answer to that, though at this point I'd never recognize any of the songs to know for sure anyway haha.

The other obvious option is that it is simply live recordings that they never released. I know they have recorded live shows more than once and never put out anything other than the Colors DVD.

Also, I hope I enjoy the new record. I liked TGM, but I haven't listened to it in a long time. Didn't stick around in my rotation as long as previous albums have from them.

Just listened. Sounds about like what you expect from them at this point but I did enjoy it. Not super psyched about the extended part at the beginning of the song but I really liked the heavy part of the song once they got in to it. Almost better than the stuff from TGM which I was lukewarm on after spinning it a bunch.

It's definitely BTBAM that's for sure. And as much as it pains me to say this, I think going with someone other than Jamie King at this point in their career was a good move sonically. It doesn't sound that much different than his production but even a slight change in production will probably freshen up this album for their fans a bit.

^that's what was a pleasant surprise to me. Besides the random stuff at the beginning which weren't really that meaningful, the heavy parts of the song had a lot of riffage that reminded me of why I liked them in the first place. It's at least a promising start to this new material.

beginning of that song reminded me of some Symphony X. (which was also mentioned in the comments below the song) this track really got me pumped for me BTBAM. i liked TGM, but was a little let down after Colors - save Swim to the Moon. and like you guys have mentioned, I got some vintage vibes off the sample.

very, very excited. will pre-order.

Colors is a masterpiece and they're going to be hard pressed to ever top that. I'm digging this new track, and I'm stoked about the new EP, but I don't see anything living up to the bar set by Colors.

I agree with Ronny. The Great Misdirect is growing on me but it still kinda feels like a weaker sequel to colors with most of the same elements. Even some of the sections were predictable the first time i heard it and i saw that happen again when i listened to that clip. When it got to the part with the clean singing i was like "watch they're about to go into some clean rhythmic/melodic thing"

Every other BTBAM album stands out and is almost like a completely different band:

S/T is kinda like that early faceless/black dahlia style hardcore meets at the gates feel
Silent Circus is less melodic more mathy/grindcore almost (except for shevenal)
Alaska takes a progressive turn and there is way more emphasis on melody
Colors yeah you get it
TGB Kinda like colors, nothing particularly unique about it

^Colors is also the album that in a way put them permanently on the map, so you have to take that in account, but i still agree with you.

im looking forward to the new protest. the newest human abstract cd with their new singer is pretty fucking awesome. i can see it pulling in some people who didn't previously like the vocals. i vouch for it, even if it is only 38 minutes long (cheaper too so i can live with that).

Never been a huge Human Abstract fan but the new CD definitely is worlds better than Midheaven though at least which was absolutely terrible regardless of the horrible vocals.

It's worth checking out for people that enjoy protest the hero, btbam, glass casket etc.

Completely agree, I like veil of maya's breakdowns in a couple of their newer songs but thats mainly because its not that copycat djent BS that feels so formulaic. Most of the other *core stuff turns me off almost instantly. Don't get me started on the trite At the gates / In Flames E Minor, C major A minor chord progression that runs rampant at Brewery shows and empty volume 11 shows

That being said my band has like 1 or two breakdowns, but it makes sense in the context of our doom metal feel kinda like the ones at the end of this song and moreso that i can't imagine anyone doing some windmill tae kwon do shit to our music haha...

Or even like half the riffs in this song... Idk when i think of slow riffs i try and go into a black sabbath direction

They are out of wilmington, the lead guitarist is a good friend of mine. They just put out a 7 track ep called Learning to Suffer.

I'm curious what you guys think. I would post a video but I'm posting from my phone.
