I had a job interview today that got an extremely favorable response. The hiring principal told me that she thought I would be perfect in a certain classroom and immediately scheduled a trial teaching session for next week. Although this is the truth, I don't think hiring managers want to hear it. welp, didnt get the job I interviewed for, actually, nobody did apparently according to the HR lady....looks like they will change the questions and repost...odd, was open for a month and a half for this posting. I knew it was a longshot, but the questions were so general that is why I applied. It makes me think nobody internal wanted the position (more responsbility, no increase in pay basically) and they wiill have a hard time finding someone (does not appear they want to train, got that impression during the interview, or you will be trained for 2 days and then considered an expert and you are on your own).

Had my interview for a state job on July 1st. Keep in mind I live in Oklahoma at the moment and have BS and MS degrees in meteorology. I did an in person interview since I could schedule it during my vacation back to NC. Wore a suit and felt I did ok with the interview. Felt like a good opportunity because I really want to move back to NC as soon as possible. I was told that a decision would be made at the end of the month.
I had yet yet to hear back, so a few days ago I called to see what was up. Apparently the decision was made, but the main interviewer took an extended break (6-8 weeks, for a justified reason) and I guess it's been tied up with the budget or something. Anyway, I'm supposed to hear about it soon, though none of my contacts I listed on my state application were called. I did send in a cover letter and references with my state application, but it seems like those never reached the interviewer.
Bottom line is, I'm guessing I won't get the job because my references were not contacted. Though I have had a job offer before without interview (for a National Weather Service job, no less). Thoughts? 8/15/2010 12:54:22 PM |

^ i got about 6 interviews in the first three weeks of job searching, and then didn't get another interview until MONTH three, so I wouldn't worry about the initial pains. how many hours a day do you spend doing that? do you have any particular strategy to the search or do you just kinda go?
do you have a generic-ish cover letter that you just tailor to fit the job every time or do you write totally new ones for each job you apply for?
writing cover letters is like my least favorite activity of all time. i just don't know what to say without it sounding like complete bullshit - well i mean it sounds really good when i write it, but i'm sure whoever reads it can see right through it all. even if i'm genuinely interested (which i usually am) i feel like they just read it and probably think i'm bullshitting. anyone else feel like this? 8/17/2010 1:37:39 PM |

I probably spend about 3 hours a day just researching companies and every once in a while I'll apply online but most times I'll use my contacts/online sources to directly contact the hiring manager or an exec. Really online job searching, while not completely a waste of time, is the worst way to get hits. I think I remember reading that about 1% of all jobs are gotten through simply applying online.
I have full registered access to OneSource and D&B though thanks to my previous employer, so it's quite easy to find hiring managers, who is hiring, executive contacts, etc, etc using those.
Use a recruiter, use LinkedIn (which I'm HORRIBLE about) and even put yourself out there and get informational interviews with employers who you might be interested in even if they aren't hiring right now.
And I know people are probably thinking, this guy doesn't know what he is doing since I still don't have a job, but I've had quite a bit of good leads and turned down a few offers (when I was misreading the market). It's a lot more difficult to run a job search in an area where you don't have the professional network that you did in your previous area of employment (read: California).
Re: Cover letters. I have a sort of generic base but I always highly tailor it to the position. I've heard people increasingly say that if you're applying online and don't know the position that well (from the description) or if you don't know the name of the actual hiring manager then don't bother. Almost all crucial information that hiring managers will look for to pass the eye test will come from the resume itself.

Covers letters only benefit you if they're really good...otherwise they're a negative.
We get covers letters that read like a "get to know you" summary someone might write on the first day of 6th grade.

That was the same for me for 8.5 months for every 9 of the 10 jobs I applied for. It was so frustrating.

0.5-2 hours daily depending on how many new listings there were among the three websites I searched for jobs on. No real strategy; just went. If the job advertised the company, I put word out through my network that I was applying there.
I had a generic cover letter that I would plug in where I found their listing, the date it was posted, and position...when applicable the company I was applying for.

This! When my brother inlaw finished grad school, him and my sister both found contract jobs at the place they worked at before he left for grad school. After being hired their again they had to go to an orientation with other people where all but one person knew someone who already worked for the company.
