also good points...i know for a fact that i didn't have any software installed for the keyboard/mouse on vista, but win7 automatically detected the devices during an update and installed the updated drivers (which included the microsoft software)...i can't remember when that happened, though, and if i was having this trouble before then or not
i'll check my bios and device manager settings at lunch and see what's up...it may be pretty simple
thanks for the suggestions...it likely has nothing to do with win7 except possibly in regards to some default settings 11/11/2009 11:00:51 AM |

I'm actually trying to get WoL working, so I can ssh/rsync stuff from work. I was able to wake it up from actual shutdown, but I guess normally it sleeps and I'm not able to wake it from work. Anybody know any more about WoL? Do you have to do something different to wake it from sleep vs. powered off? 11/11/2009 11:38:27 AM |

my guess would be something in the bios to enable wake from sleep mode. idk though, i've never used wol 11/11/2009 11:43:54 AM |

anyone else get a "Windows explorer has stopped working" errors? i heard of it happening in beta, but not RTM, this freaking sucks, already formatted and reinstalled and it's back.... i was hoping it was a bad install disc but it's most definitely a bug, i'm getting it quite frequently now.

no but I have a good amount of stuff on my external drive (NAS, MyBook)
edit:
I had tentatively concluded that it had to do with the external drive. Some times this happens when I am positive explorer is doing something with it, other times I'm not sure (attempting to empty the recycle bin, for example).
Either way, it is 100% reproducible for some period of time (if I keep trying again and again it will keep happening) but if I leave it alone and come back to it later it'll be fine. No clue.

Do you enjoy using the stock Windows 7 themes? Turns out that there are hidden regional themes tucked away on the hard drive:
%WINDIR%\Globalization\MCT\
Just go into each subdir and open the .themepack file to install them.

There are a bunch of battery life reviews out today comparing Win7 to XP on portables.

They all basically show Win7 reduces battery life by 10-16%. Might be worth sticking to XP for a while after all 11/12/2009 11:08:25 AM |

You don't say fuel economy went down in a car because it's bloated. There can be hundreds of reasons why. Not the least of which being that Mobile Power Management tools for hardware don't even really exist yet for Win7 (they are all just compat ports of the Vista/XP PM tools).
Give it time, battery life will improve and we will all continue to live our lives.
Not to mention the inherit differences in running say XP themes and Aero themes. I wouldn't say hardware accelerated UI is bloat, but it's certainly going to be more power hungry. 11/13/2009 5:05:38 PM |

Again, what makes me a fanboy? I have a different perspective sometimes, but I don't see how I'm a MS fanboy in any way. I own plenty of competitive products, recommend competitive products, and continually try and use a wide variety of offerings.
Most of the time I'm just arguing with YOU because you stick your head in the sand with Apple products and it's hilarious to me. That might make a troll, but it doesn't make me a fanboy11/13/2009 5:39:22 PM |

See, thats what you WANT to believe but that isn't the case at all. My head isn't in the sand. I was a long time apple hater just like everyone else because well thats the thing to do and who wants to side with the minority? Then several years ago I randomly went out and bought an apple powerbook G4 and the whole experience was excellent and I've stuck with Apple notebooks since.
Then the iPhone came out but I didn't jump on it right away until a bunch of my friends had them and after playing around with theirs i figured i would give it a shot. The device won me over. Had the zune actually worked on Windows Vista when it first came out I might have kept that too.
Same applies to consoles...I love my Apple Microsoft Xbox360 and think the PS3 is total garbage after using an Xbox360.
As for OS's...I think windows 7 is on par with Mac OS X finally so I can have the same enjoyable problem free experience no matter which OS I've booted in.
I try not to own anything I don't actually enjoy using...and so far Apple has that for notebooks and phones for me. I have no loyalty with any manufacture/software company...the minute something better comes out I'll go to that.
You on the other hand are blinded to everything but Microsoft simply because you work there...and you take personal offense to anything negative related with Microsoft, justified or not and every product they make is a gift to mankind.

This is actually my own philosophy too.

Right, which is why I own an iPhone, have an app on the AppStore, own a Mac Mini, own a PS3 and 360, own an iPod, use Google Chrome almost exclusively, have 3 Logitech mice to one MS mouse, three Logitech keyboards to one MS keyboard (which is what came with the computer). I'm a long time user and supporter of LAMP and I host sites exclusively on linux managed servers.
So where are you getting this fanboyism from? Because YOUR perception is light years from reality, as usual.11/13/2009 6:25:28 PM |

It's about time! I had always felt that mounting and creating images should be a basic function of the OS- not saying it makes sense to include robust support for a multitude of formats, but at least ISO files.
I'm looking forward to upgrading my laptop now.11/14/2009 1:51:44 PM |

Yeah, those are just features. Bloat is when new features are disproportionate to the additional size and impact on speed of the product in which they are delivered, and in this case, imo, it's not bloated. 11/14/2009 2:09:13 PM |
