^^^^^Cheap doesn't mean that it's a good deal. Other than screen size, that has absolutely no advantage over any other device. My Droid Eris is as fast or faster and can do MORE than this thing does (3g, battery life, 2.1, Android Marketplace, etc. w/o any mod). Incredible, N1, Evo are faster and do more. iPad is faster, bigger screen, & again does more. From what I've seen, Dell's new tablet will be faster, do more, & be the same size. I can sell you a bag of shit for $1 but that doesn't mean it's a good deal. This is like a 1995 Accord with 200k miles and bald tires that's for sale for $5000. It's 1/5 the cost of a new one but it's still a piece of shit and there's not much point in buying it.

you must not understand what firmware is, and i agree with you, you are getting what you paid for. other than running a bit slower and shorter battery life, i don't really see a downside to this device that could possibly be fixed with a firmware update. all your "faster and do more" devices means 5 times the cost of this device, the M001 is a MID, not a phone, look it up before you start comparing.

I must have missed the part where I said it was a shitty phone
I wouldn't say it's a MID because for that it needs to be mobile. 2 hours of battery life isn't very mobile. I would need 3 of them just to fly to Vegas. Hell, you wouldn't even make it through a lot of movies!
Yes, I understand what firmware is and have no idea what would make you think otherwise.
Anyway, sorry that it offends you that I find it pointless. I guess you could always buy 3 of them to match the battery life of a basic netbook or something though... Maybe I'm just at a point in my life where I need more qualities in something than "Dude, it's like so cheap!" before I consider them for purchase. 5/19/2010 9:11:38 PM |

Engadget reviews the EVO - http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/htc-evo-4g-review/
Quote : | "Wrap-up
Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. But the fact remains that it's still very much an Android device -- which means that if you don't like Android now, odds are good that even Android executed on the most amazing hardware to date won't do much to change your opinion of it. You've also got to be concerned about upgradeability; Froyo is almost certainly around the corner now, and HTC hasn't done anything to suggest it's able to push Sense-powered updates in a timely fashion.
That said, this is truly one of the best smartphones ever made, and even spotty 4G -- a reality of a young technology that's going to take years to properly build out -- probably won't do much to hamper your enjoyment of this thing. It's reasonable to assume that phones like the EVO will ultimately come to every carrier over the next few months... but hey, if you jumped ship for Sprint to pick up this monster, we wouldn't be able blame you." |

My biggest grip with 4g is the extra cost for limited coverage...
I could excuse the bad coverage because it's new technology, but at this point it doesn't seem worth paying extra for.
I do like the way mobile technology is going though, and I think it says alot that I'm more excited about smartphone progression than PC progression.
Now if only someone could put a chip in my brain so I can have seamless internet integration 5/19/2010 11:25:00 PM |

you were comparing the device to a phone, which is not it's purpose, that's my point, because all you did was list a bunch of $500 phones that aren't the same thing. 2 hours or 15 hours doesn't define what an MID is. also like i said before, 2 hours was one report, we have no idea what that means, 2 hours of video? you're also complaining about the one thing you can actually do something about. and again if you new anything about firmware you'd know speed & battery life can easily be enhanced. i almost doubled my speed & battery life with a new ROM... so i'm still confused at what you're complaining about... oh right, because for $100 it's not perfect out of the box like other $500 devices are.
i had the same grips you had about the iPad, it doesn't do anything my phone or laptop can't do already, and my only hesitation was the price (not worth the price for what it did). but now there's a $100 device... and for what it does, i think it's probably worth the money. heck for $100 i'm interested just to play around with it, whether it's useful or not.
also i have wireless tether on my rooted droid, so i can get 3g on a wifi-only tablet anytime.

^JIT & Flash 10.1 are part of Froyo, so you might as well add wireless tethering ... i HOPE they also address the upgrade path and getting everyone on the same version, also expect they open up installing apps on SD cards so we aren't limited to installed ROM
New market is BADLY needed too, kind of odd how their current system has lasted them up to 50,000 apps.

i hate to say this, but i think once Froyo rolls out it's going to be much better than the iPhone OS is now. Apple better have some tricks rolled up their sleeves... they better find a way to get their iPhone on Verizon (allow wireless tethering), increase speed, push install apps/files to your device, etc. if they're going to compete. with all the announcements today, it sounds like Google is stealing Apple's thunder by showing they're thinking big-picture platform, taking ads, apps, content and information to the TV is the next logical step and Apple hasn't delved into that market yet.
my only hope is Google can integrate it all into one Market & source that's easy to develop for. 5/20/2010 3:04:55 PM |

^ I agree...I think if Google can keep pushing innovation while improving the experience they can easily dominate the phone market and beyond. The only downside I can see is the upgrades will be lagging since the phone makers themselves have to make sure the upgrade will work with their hardware and UIs. I think this is where Apple clearly wins...they can guarantee the same experience for everyone at the same time. 5/20/2010 3:23:57 PM |

I think Android has already surpassed iPhone OS with 2.1. In my opinion, it's not the OS that's the problem, it's the apps. Apple's always going to have a "better" user experience for that since they're controlling the apps so you get far less of the junk apps that Android has (I'm sure I'm not the only one that's downloaded apps that barely work and have been abandoned by the author). My iPhone OS experience is limited to my iPad but I haven't found any areas where 2.1 is lacking as the OS itself. Pretty much all of my problems are related to bloat & processor speed (Eris is far from fast). Basically, it appears to me that Android & iPhone OS are on the path to mirror Windows & Mac OS. Windows (Android) "does more" but it's generally less polished because of the lack of control retained by MS/Google. 5/20/2010 4:01:13 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
yea, probably a fair comparison. until someone does a study on % of apps that are junk, i will have a hard time believing that theory though, i mean 200,000 apps? surely there's bound to be junk apps in there. there needs to be a little bit more quality control in terms of programmers understanding how to program to save battery life, but Android is blowing up so fast I kinda have a feeling people are just getting their apps out there without much QC so they can ride the bandwagon. 5/20/2010 4:11:26 PM |

Quote : | "Google co-founder says bad apps to blame for poor Android battery life Posted on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Phil Nickinson
Google co-founder gets a day's life out of his Android battery, and he thinks you should, too. Speaking at Google's Zeitgeist forum (alongside CEO Eric Schmidt), Page said poorly written third-party apps likely are to blame.
"I have noticed there are a few people who have phones where there is software running in the background that just sort of exhausts the battery quickly. If you are not getting a day, there is something wrong."
Schmidt -- who, like Page, also is way smarter than you -- chimed in, "The primary consumer of the battery life on these phones is the transmit/receive circuit. SO tuning that and obviously figuring out a way to not use too much of that extends your battery life."
Sho' 'nuff, Eric. Looks like somebody read our battery life tips post. " |

Apple should be worried, but Android is still not as good as iPhone OS. The cut/paste in the browser is still pretty horrible in 2.1. Hopefully they figure out something that works for 2.2.
And it's hilarious that they keep touting the 1Ghz processor, when iPhone OS is faster than Android on the current gen hardware (500-700Mhz procs), and will most likely be faster on the future hardware too (especially if the iPad is any indication-- iPad is a 1Ghz processor too). 5/20/2010 7:25:36 PM |

At this point I'm just wondering where the balance of power lies between the carriers and Google. Android has obviously delivered a mobile OS that consumers are demanding. Carriers are selling data plans and are making $$ as a result. At the same time, Google is pushing the envelope with tethering, WiFi AP, flash, itunes streaming, etc.
I have the N1 and I'm pretty sure AT&T knows this after I just swapped the SIM with my iphone. When looking at my online account my phone "icon" is no longer an iPhone but rather a generic picture. This may be a long shot but I'm willing to bet that N1 ATT users get froyo with USB tethering only. I just hope this process doesn't take months instead of weeks. 5/20/2010 11:47:21 PM |

They just bought SimplifyMedia. I had their iPhone app for a while, all it did was stream your music collection over 3g via a client that sat on your desktop. First of all, it was slow as balls. Second, unless Google/Simplify has done a major overhaul on their software, this isn't "syncing" with your music library.
You guys realize there are apps in the Android Market right now that can wirelessly sync with iTunes right? I just picked up TuneSync a week or two ago and it works great.5/20/2010 11:50:05 PM |
