Not to jinx it, but is it safe to say that the new strength and conditioning coach improved preseason injury numbers? Guess we stopped practicing in the parking lots.

There is a TOB quote somewhere about getting new shoes because of constant ankle injuries. I remember reading it a few weeks ago maybe but have no idea where.

^Sounds suspiciously like Scott Wood's discussion of his shoes improving his free throw streak.

Pretty funny piece on Tom O'Brien on Grantland today:

Quote :
" In Tom O'Brien, State has everything you'd expect in an aging ex-Marine turned football coach: In a word, he's "grizzled."

Years ago on SNL, Robert Duvall guest-hosted and appeared in a game-show sketch called "Who's More Grizzled?" a competition between old men pitting their varying degrees of "grizzledness" against one another. And Tom O'Brien would be the Ken Jennings of "Who's More Grizzled?"

If you like things like emotion or excitement from your head football coach, you'll need to look elsewhere. These concepts don't exist in Tom O'Brien's world. If you like stoicism and a signature sideline pose consisting of your arms folded tightly upon themselves, then you've hit pay dirt.

Granted, there are times where the human buried deep within Tom O'Brien oozes to the surface. Like the time he joked on the dais at a preseason event recently, or when he brought all guns to bear on UNC's football program last year during the week leading up to the State/Carolina game, in response to some weak trash talk from UNC's interim head coach Everett Withers. Maybe it's Tom's grizzledness that makes it so enjoyable when the Steve Spurrier in him sneaks out. You know it's in there, stifled, buried under layers of leather … you just don't know when it's coming, or why.

But is a grizzled coach like Tom a good fit for State? I think so. For a school that cranks out engineers and farmers — people whose worlds are defined by strict equations and production — a measured man like O'Brien fits our profile nicely. No flash, no pomp, no circumstance. Don't tell us about the pain — show us the baby.

Thus far over five years, he's done for State what he did at BC, which is turn a program previously capable of flashes of greatness amid valleys of sadness into a solid, steady performer that gets neither too high nor too low for its station. In every sense, State football is now an extension of the man at the top: grizzled."

especially after seeing the all-access, i think i get tom o'brien, and i really like him.

he's retiring, not trying to get further and further into the depths of bigtime college football. he just wants to recruit nice kids and make them go to class and do community service and see if he can't go win 9 or 10 games w/ them. and he's smart enough to know that you have to beat your neighbors. it's a lot like playing at navy, actually, where they want to just go out and play their best so long as they beat army.

i like it. it's not as good as winning a lot of games, but it's not as bad as chuck amato either.

Well, we can still start the season off strong by going into ACC play at 3-1. To get anything better than a crappy bowl we really need to pick up wins against teams like WF, BC, UMD and UNC and we'll probably need at least one signature win against either FSU or Clemson. Who knows how things will go from here on out. We definitely need to win some division road games... 0-13 under TOB is insanely sad.

To be honest I'm not overly pessimistic after this loss.

If you guys really think we looked that bad you were just overrating us in your head, we knew this team had a lot of question marks.

We played really well against the run minus two big plays (one to a receiver). Amerson got burned which was a bit fluky. Our dline looked really solid and Wolff was coming up to the line to make plays which will really help our questionable linebackers.

On offense Watson and Carter looked really solid. There's some guy on our team named Payton that no one has ever heard of that somehow gets open for 40 yard passes about once a quarter. Underwood played when we thought he might be out for the season. Greene still looks like a total badass. Our o-line actually looked competent for the first time in several years and this was against an SEC team.

Sure, Glennon shit the bed but his arm looked as good as ever. If he ever gains any confidence he could turn out to be a good QB before the end of his career.

TOB seems to have a pulse this year and even correctly went for two 4th downs early in the game.

Overall, we look like a solid team that made about 10 horrible plays. If we get better quick and can limit that to 2-4 then we'll be fine. We won't be playing SEC teams every week, we play in the ACC where almost every team really stinks.

TOB never has us ready to start the season so it's good to take a nice kick to the testichips in a non-conference game instead of losing to a bunch of scrub ACC teams instead.

We look like we're going to be competitive this year. I can't completely rule out winning 5 ACC games and we have a pretty decent shot of going .500 in the ACC this year.

fwiw, the national media today was saying stuff like "Tennessee looked really sharp" about Friday's game

my hope is obviously that they are much improved over last year (though in fairness, they were pretty good before Bray got hurt) and that they have double digit wins and make our week 1 loss seem like a quality loss

that of course, combined with us whooping UConn and having a solid conference record

whoa, lets not get carried away. Tennessee is a legit borderline top 25 team that can go .500 in the SEC. But they aren't winning 10 games without multi-miracles.

To be fair, it's really disappointing that Amerson let down expectations a little in the national spotlight but that doesn't mean he should be losing draft stock or anything. I've seen Darelle Revis and Ed Reed blow coverage just like he did. Maybe not twice in a single game, but still. And as others have mentioned it looks like the big run play was more just a bad defensive play call (no safety in the backfield) so really he only got burned once. As long as the secondary just cleans up their act in general we should still be as good as expected in the backfield.

I agree with face to a certain extent, UT is SOLID, but not still a long ways to go before getting back to the good ole days. That being said, having looked at their schedule, 10 wins is attainable. They'll only be underdogs in the 3/11 of the remaining games, one of which is a road game at a vastly overrated South Carolina.

If Bray stays healthy, a 10-3 finish can happen.

One problem with Amerson might be that he didn't have any quality tape on Anderson or whoever. JUCO transfer that he might have just underestimated, plus the latest tape on Bray was probably shitty because it was broken thumb tape

sounds so odd... doesnt sound like something that TOB can just suspend him for, seems like an NCAA thing... will he magically pass the classes after 4 games?

more info:
Quote :
"N.C. State senior cornerback C.J. Wilson will serve of a four-game academic suspension from the NCAA, Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien said Monday.
Wilson, a three-year starter, did not pass enough credit hours in the spring semester, O'Brien said. Wilson graduated in Dec. 2011 but under NCAA rules, needed to take 12 hours in the spring and pass six. Wilson did not meet the NCAA standard, O'Brien said.
Wilson completed 12 credit hours over two summer sessions, O'Brien said, which helped him re-gain his eligibility for the final eight regular-season games of the 2012 season.
Wilson has started 29 games in his career and has three interceptions, all returned for touchdowns, and 95 tackles. He will be eligible to return for N.C. State's trip to Miami on Sept. 29. N.C. State plays at Connecticut on Saturday."

So I guess its some sort of pro-rated thing where failing the spring semester = missing 4 games, and passing 2 summer sessions = good for 8 games.

I listened to the press conference today. TOB went into much more details. Wilson graduated but needed to pass 6 credit hours in the spring to be eligible. Had some family issues and basically didn't go to class. Took 12 hrs this summer to make up for it with a 3.4 gpa. NCAA looked at his extenuating circumstances and his history as a model student (summer school included) and gave him lenience. (4 games instead of the season)

So basically, this was good not bad.

Not that lenient, since apparently they would be fine with it if we made up two courses and gave him A's.

ACC Bowl Game Watch 2012:
ACC #1 Orange (BCS): #15 Virginia Tech (1-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #2 Chick-fil-A: Wake Forest (1-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #3 Russell Athletics: Miami (1-0 ACC, 1-1)
ACC #4 Sun Bowl: #6 Florida State (0-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #5 Belk Bowl: #12 Clemson (0-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #6 Music City: Virginia (0-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #7 Independence: Maryland (0-0 ACC, 2-0)
ACC #8 Military: NC State (0-0 ACC, 1-1)

These are not my predictions, just the current standings for where ACC teams are currently slotted based on record. A tie in record goes to the higher ranked team.
