This brings us back to my previous point: is the market actually saturated, or has the recruiting pool increase changed the definition of "qualified" in the eyes of employers? Talk to a recruiter and ask them how many applicants they receive per position.

Woah, you totally missed what I meant because my response was clunky. This is exactly what I meant. That part of the response was meant as a knock on protectionist policy.
Though I'm curious why you disagree with me that in theory an increase in globalization will potentially lead to more inequality (until skills are learned) which a society would need to compensate for the net benefit to occur.

^^^ So the job market is only saturated because it's cheaper to hire non-citizens rather than hire and train citizens.
How is that good for the US workforce?

Do you mean over-saturated? In general, additional supply to a specific workforce (say computer programmers) will drive down salaries for that workforce. But, you need to remember that our economy isnt a 1:1 economy. As more people participate, the economy grows, so more people can benefit from an economy. So, studies have shown that even though salaries might* decrease in the short term, there is a net benefit in job growth (for example, a new job for managers who speak the language of the computer programmers).
*An important caveat to this is that the elasticity of demand for a specific workforce isn't so simple as a straight lined supply and demand curve.

the bottom of the article you linked says that's been a federal provision of immigration for over 100 years now. This would target Mexico hard, as 73% of Mexican immigrants receive some form of welfare. Comparatively, East Asians, Europeans, and South Asians use welfare at a rate similar to or lower than natives to this country.

^ I'm not sure what you're referring to. The bottom of the article mentions an existing federal law preventing recent immigrants from getting welfare for 5 years. That's a wholly different concept from stopping immigrants from entering the country because the administration thinks they might end up on welfare. Let's be honest here... who the government thinks might end up on welfare will be a purely subjective measure . 1/31/2017 7:31:58 PM |

Obstructing this is such an easy win for Democrats. They would have overwhelming public support at this moment, and will likely be dealing with a new president before midterms. And they wouldn't be replacing a Scalia with another Scalia.
They won't do it, though

I'm not sure if obstructing is the best option, but it will be what democrats do.
Trump is basically attacking the GOP in congress now, so it will look like Dems/GOP in congress being petty with each other and Trump is the "outsider".
Dems should stall the nomination for a few months, but not indefinitely. They should definitely stall the cabinet picks because they are terrible picks. But a blanket, indefinite obstruction is counterproductive. 1/31/2017 10:56:54 PM |

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2017/jan/30/donald-trump/why-comparing-trumps-and-obamas-immigration-restri/
Quote : | "In 2011, there was a specific threat
First, Obama’s suspension was in direct response to a failed plot by Iraqi nationals living in Bowling Green, Ky., to send money, explosives and weapons to al-Qaida. The two men were arrested by the FBI in May 2011 for actions committed in Iraq and trying to assist overseas terrorist groups.
Both had entered the United States as refugees after lying about their past terrorism ties on paperwork. One man worked as a bombmaker in Iraq, and the FBI even matched his fingerprints to an unexploded IED discovered in 2005 in Iraq, raising questions about the thoroughness of the vetting process.
Trump’s ban, meanwhile, is more preemptive. As PolitiFact reported, no refugee or immigrant from any of the seven countries targeted by the ban has been implicated in any fatal terrorist attack in the United States, though perpetrators of at least three non-deadly cases were connected to Iran or Somalia.
Obama’s order was narrower in scope
Second, the scope of the two policies is slightly different. Obama’s 2011 order put a pause on refugee processing, whereas Trump’s halt in entries applies to all non-U.S. visitors.
It should also be noted that Iraqi refugees were still admitted to the United States every month in 2011, though there was a significant drop after May of that year. Here’s a chart with data from the state department: " |
Quote : | "The seven countries on Trump’s list
While not necessarily part of this fact-check, Trump’s suggestion that he selected the seven countries as a continuation of Obama’s policy is imprecise.
According to the executive order, Trump’s action applies to "countries designated pursuant to Division O, Title II, Section 203 of the 2016 consolidated Appropriations Act."
That refers to a 2015 act, signed into law by Obama, revising the United States’ visa waiver program. The visa waiver program allows citizens from 38 countries to enter the United States without a visa for up to 90 days. Under the legislation, citizens of those 38 countries who had traveled to Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Sudan after March 2011 were no longer eligible for the visa waiver. Libya, Yemen, and Somalia were later added to the list.
In other words, Obama’s actions dealt with people who had visited Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, not citizens of those countries, and it did not prohibit them from entering the United States." |
