when a company bids a job, there is the "base bid" which is work that will be under contract to the low bidder, and then sometimes there are "alternates". The alternates are at the owner's discretion whether or not to issue them into the contract. It has to do with how much money they want to spend.

the job I am working on is a "reclaimed" water main project on UNC's campus.

the base bid is about 2000LF of pipe, Alt. #1 is about 1500LF of pipe, and Alt. #2 is about 2800LF.

well, if times weren't so tight, more jobs would be coming in over budget, and that's where you see more trickiness with the alternates.
