this doesn't change the fact that having and using an iphone requires that you sign a 2 year contract which you make monthly payments on. the ipad does not.

Is there a point in there some where? Both the iPhone and iPad are hugely successful.
One is a phone and the other isn't.
One requires a contract (as all smart phones do) and the other doesn't.
One is large and one is small.

when my cell phone & air card contracts are up in like 6months i've considered the following:
- get the most basic cell phone i can from verizon so i can have just a voice & text plan (since they require a data plan now if your phone is data-capable)
- get an ipad and use that as my would-be "smart phone" but without having the smart phone. i do a lot of talking & texting but i have little interest in the smart phones because they're too small & finniky for me (for example, your tapping has to be too precise for my liking due to the small screen). i'd prefer to just carry an ipad in my purse & use that to check up on email, look something up on google, get directions, do whatever.
is there a drawback im not seeing in this plan? as i see it, i can do everything i would be able to do on an iphone, but on a bigger screen (and obvi not make phone calls, besides skpe--right?). i know you'll say that a drawback is that i have to carry it around with me, but i already carry a purse and it really wouldn't be that big of a deal (for me) to pull it out to do what i "could" do on a smart phone. 6/6/2010 2:16:55 PM |

http://www.dailytech.com/ATT+Accidentally+Shares+114000+iPad+3G+Buyers+Email+Addresses/article18670.htm
Quote : | "Apple can't be happy with AT&T's epic security fail
In what is one of the biggest leaks of emails in recent history, a group called Goatse Security has published the personal emails of 114,067 iPad 3G purchasers according to Gawker. The emails were obtained in what appears to be a legal fashion by querying a public interface that AT&T accidentally left exposed.
The names of victims immediately draw attention to the story. Among them are New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson, Diane Sawyer of ABC News, film mogul Harvey Weinstein, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and even White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. A number of CEOs, CFOs, and CTOs also had their emails exposed by the leak.
Additionally, a number of the email addresses exposed were from high-ranking military officials or DARPA researchers. Among these was William Eldredge, who "commands the largest operational B-1 [strategic bomber] group in the U.S. Air Force."
Every one of these individuals and thousands of other everyday people had their email addresses and corresponding ICC-IDs (integrated circuit card identifiers) leaked. The ICC-ID is a number used to uniquely identify SIM cards for a particular subscriber's device.
How did Goatse get this treasure trove of data? Apparently AT&T left a script on their public website, which when handed an ICC-ID would respond back with the email address of the subscriber. This apparently was intended for an AJAX-style response inside AT&T's web apps.
The complete lack of protections allowed the group to freely guess ICC-IDs based on known IDs from iPad pictures posted online, and in turn harvest the resulting emails. The only "trick", if you could call it that, which they had to do was to spoof the site into thinking they were using a iPad browser by adding an iPad-style "User agent" header in their Web request.
A simple PHP script later, Goatse Security had a hoards of emails to sift through. And here's the kicker -- before reporting this gaping hole to AT&T, they shared the exploit with various interested parties. So there's no telling who else used it, how many more IDs were leaked, or what other damage could have resulted.
With the ICC-ID and unique email in hand, malicious parties could easily launch mass attacks to try to gain further access. For example, it's likely that at least one of those emails with the password "darthvader" would return account access.
This huge breach is likely worrisome to those who are thinking of buying an iPad 3G – most people would prefer their personal email address not get shared with the masses. The only consolation here, is that if your password is sufficiently strong and your email address does not hint at your identity, the leak might not be that big a deal (other than subjecting you to a bit of extra spam).
Apple, which has already hinted at its displeasure with AT&T on certain issues, certainly can't be thrilled about this development either. It releases a hit new product, and now thanks to the service provider over a hundred thousand of its customers have had their personal information compromised. Apple CEO Steve Jobs surely won't rest until AT&T's gaping hole is filled, but by now the damage is probably already done. One thing's for sure. There's going to be a lot of fallout from this incredible breach." |

I have 2 iPads...one is working great, the other says "no service" when trying to connect to 3G.
Any ideas what might be the problem? They are side by side and one works great and this other wont let me connect.
It initially worked, and I tried to register/pay for the 3G, and somewhere in the process the connection got lost and the registration didnt go through. No I get "no service".

PackMan2003 All American 2189 Posts user info edit post |
I actually bought it for my dad. I use it pretty often when I go to see him.
It's the 16GB, wifi version. Besides the problems of having no optical drive, no SD card, no USB, it's pretty painful to use a lot of the time. All I expected to do with it was to surf the web and use youtube and it sucks at that. Sites that rely on Flash are completely dead. The onscreen keyboard is tedious to use. Copy and Paste options are a pain to execute. Just the simple process of modifying your search box in google is a horrible experience. I can hardly ever see a youtube video (I can get to the video and see the first frame but it won't play).
The only thing I've had a decent experience with on the iPad was google maps. And even that gets aggravating when you're waiting for images to load. And the book application is cool too. I like that you can get a lot of the classics for free.
Overall, I don't think it's worth the money. If it was half the price, I think it would be something cool to have when you can resign to all it's limitations. But for $500, I think a netbook is a much better option. 6/23/2010 2:35:26 PM |

I'm still waiting to see how that OnLive stuff ends up working with a "real" internet connection. You just know those guys that are demoing that stuff are probably more no more than 2-3 hops away from the servers those games are running on. Let's see how it looks on a DSL connection in Podunk, NC with a 250ms ping time.] 6/26/2010 10:25:53 PM |
seedless All American 27142 Posts user info edit post |
It would do just the same as you would in a city with 250ms or whatever, you really don't lag with Onlive, you'll get disconnected from the servers if enough latency is detected and this is super rare from my experience. Basically, the shit works and works well and my experience is well beyond what I expected. I'm now a believer and I can't wait to see how people are going to flock to it once they really understand the scope of the service. If you have a solid internet connection or a shitty internet connection no matter where you are located the results are going to be the same from what I can tell and I am an active member of the Onlive forums and community so I feel like I can make a call that is at least backed by community feedback. 6/27/2010 7:46:30 AM |

Got the Dodocase in. I'm undecided on it so far. It looks so nice that I'm more worried about damaging it getting it dirty than I ever was about the iPad by itself. It doesn't function as a stand nearly as well as the Apple case, the angle it props the iPad up is very slight but it's still better than lying it flat on a table. It does look very good though. 6/30/2010 5:09:38 PM |

Engadget leaked a pre-release version of Frash which supposedly wasn't ready for public consumption and contains copyrighted materials from Adobe. But it's out there.
