this is spot-on. Ive been thinking the same thing since he was talking in the PC about how as soon as he's done, he's going to go out on the recruiting trail, and that's a huge advantage because that means (if they want to) Withers et al could still recruit AS well as coach the team for the bowl game, whereas if Fedora was coaching, he wouldn't have time to call and visit recruits plus game plan. He's already been in contact with numerous recruits for UNC including Gurley. There's a reason the NCAA limits you on the number of coaches you can have on staff.12/12/2011 2:09:59 PM |

Apparently on Roy's radio show, he was talking about how they chart assists:
Quote : | "“If Kendall Marshall comes down and throws it into John Henson and John Henson goes to lay it up and gets fouled, Kendall Marshall has done his job. So when we’re grading the tape, we give Kendall Marshall a full assist for that. But in real play, they don’t give an assist unless the basket is made. We also give half an assist just for throwing the ball because we feel the basketball has got to go inside. So for us, Kendall had 16 assists in the game Saturday, but he probably had 25 assists the way that we grade it.” " |
I think he got this from ESPN's "If Barnes made 1 more shot..." idea12/14/2011 11:00:23 PM |

I don't see what's wrong with how they count assists. It's their internal tool for improving themselves, and it makes sense.
A guard should absolutely get credit for passing the ball into a big man who goes on to make high value points (free throws + foul on the other team).
Our guards should get 3 assists for passing the ball to CJ Leslie inside the arc. Lord knows we need to do that more. They should get negative points for passing to Howell or Painter. 12/14/2011 11:12:43 PM |

Quote : | "This probably isn't allowed by the ACC , but if I were in Fedora's shoes and wanted to get some attention for the football program at UNC, I would announce that no team under his direction will ever accept a bowl bid UNLESS it had achieved at least a plus-.500 conference record.
Such a benchmark would establish a winning attitude immediately among the returning and new players, and convey Fedora's seriousness. It might also spur other schools to follow suit, which in turn would help end the mindless, ridiculous bowl matchups between marginally -- at best -- qualified teams. At the very least, it would spur some level of motivation, which was painfully absent by UNC in Shreveport. Finishing above 500 in the conference would still enable Carolina to play a decent out of conference schedule, while putting more emphasis on winning conference games. The latter is, after all, the only road open for UNC to ever get into a BCS bowl.
A team with a 3-5 record in a weak football conference has no business going to a bowl game. Period." |
