still not sure why they let 10 seconds run off the clock in two situations instead of spiking.
cant blame the receiver, he's just doing what he's supposed to do. Bad throw by the QB, he was obviously not ready for that play they should have spiked. 12/1/2012 7:58:46 PM |

Well, time to see what the opening line is between 'bama and ND.
I'm guessing it's going to be like 8.5 though it should be closer to 20. 12/1/2012 8:05:21 PM |

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but why did Oregon State play a game today? Did they already plan on not playing in the PAC-12 Championship before the season started?

ND and Bama should be a pick, but since everyone is all over the SEC's nuts it will be like Alabama -4.
Notre Dame is better on both sides of the ball, but Alabama has an enormous advantage on special teams.
All the smart money will be on ND, but the public will take Allie obviously.

Alabama demonstrably has more talent on both lines, a better QB, better RBs, and an enormous advantage in coaching. Saban has 2 months to prepare for an inept offense. Good fucking luck to ND.12/1/2012 8:10:41 PM |

no team with a defense as great as Notre Dame's should ever be more than a 3 point underdog
ND is better than people want to believe and the SEC wasn't as great this year as they have been in recent years 12/1/2012 8:11:46 PM |

Notre Dame's offense and defense are significantly better than Alabama's.

ND is fucking bipolar, Bama is consistent except the aTm game (and arguably this game). still, Bama isn't as big of a lock as everyone thinks they'll be, the ND that showed up against OU could show up 12/1/2012 8:13:54 PM |

They won't be a huge favorite, but they should be based on actual caliber of players. It will be a TD line, maybe a little more that overexcited ND fans will probably drive down to less than a TD. 12/1/2012 8:15:06 PM |

When they do stupid things like leaving an entire month gap between the last game and the bowl all bets are off. They're essentially back to working off the rust. Practice just isn't enough.
I wish they'd just give every team a one week bye, start an 8 team playoff immediately thereafter and have all the other crummy bowls within 1 - 2 weeks of the end of the season. Hate the large gap in time, I feel like you don't get to see the teams play head to head while they're still on top of their game.

Agreed. Hopefully when the playoff system starts it'll be 1 week off after the league championship games and then into the final 4. Another week off and then the final.
I'm sure it won't be, but that would be ideal. An 8 team playoff would be even more ideal, but I'll take what I can get for the time being. 12/1/2012 8:42:59 PM |

I still prefer the idea of a plus one. Play the bowls and then pick the championship game from the bowl winners. Playoff is gonna keep expanding eventually killing the bowls and the regular season excitement.

It's either time for the bowl system to die or time for them to reorganize. In my ideal world you'd cut the bowls down to 28 and have them form 4 7-Bowl coalitions. One coalition is the official NCAA championship group and the other three just take who they want that isn't playing for the title (and is at least .500 or a conference champion). All four run 8 team tournaments.
Sort of like the NCAA/NIT relationship.
Yeah, it's completely ridiculous but I keep thinking it'd be fun. 12/1/2012 9:13:22 PM |
Kurtis636 All American 14984 Posts user info edit post |
^^^^You act like killing the bowls would be a bad thing.
Nobody would weep if the NIT went away. They're on the same level of relevance. I guess they're a good time for a few fans and some extra practice time for the teams, but no one outside of Las Vegas would be upset if the Pohlan weed whacker bowl presented by U-Haul wasn't played.
Furthermore, the whole "a football playoff would kill the regular season" argument is just silly. It's not the case in college basketball, pro football, or in fact any sport that I can think of.

^ Definitely agree that there are too many bowls, should cut the number by at least 10.
But I don't think its fair to have to have these guys play 2~3 more games unless they start getting paid. Football isn't like basketball where you can play a couple extra games without significant risk of injury. 12/1/2012 9:16:31 PM |
timswar All American 41050 Posts user info edit post |
The bowls are less relevant than the NIT. The NIT is harder to get into and you have to slog through much more teams before you get your banner. 12/1/2012 9:16:59 PM |
