That kinda makes it that more powerful. From what I can tell, a well-respected marine general, Trump's Secretary of Defense for two years, a war-hawk, who went along with Trump's policies, until he finally didn't and resigned in protest. Then didn't discuss politics, like most officers, until he couldn't anymore and then unleashed scathing criticism.

Yea don't get me wrong it's good his allies are turning on him but I think utown's worry is any "mattis is a hero" narrative from the center. The image rehabilitation that people seem to get when they stop doing Trump's dirty work, without any actual attempt to make up for the damage they caused. Hence the GWB comparison.

Senators are the real test. Mattis has little to no ability to impact the Trump, other than positive or negative campaigning. Senators have the ability to shut down actual legislation and/or act to limit his power. If they don't, then their words are truly meaningless.

Mattis has been pretty apolitical. Even as SECDEF, outside of DoD policy issues (and sometimes with respect to them) he mostly just advocated for sensibility, preserving process, and living up to American ideals. So, at least among mainstream liberals, not a few of the wingnuts on TWW, he was respected. In the context of the Trump administration, I think everyone was mostly just thrilled to have a good man who was competent, stable, credentialed, with academic gravitas, etc. Basically: we don’t know if we’d want him as POTUS, but we’re happy to have him as SECDEF. We need an adult Cabinet member in the room.

Not to my knowledge. He’s definitely pretty negative on Iran—rightfully in my opinion. I remember, though, that he was against breaking the Iranian nuclear deal. He basically said that “this isn’t a very good deal, but pulling out of it will be even worse.” Which was true.
