Jeebus, how long does it take to get your security validation for the alumni email? Feels like forever.

Do you mean that form you fill in if you don't have your validation info? I did that on a Friday afternoon, and they emailed me back on Monday afternoon, IIRC.

Lol, I stayed on the houseparty mailing list since the Win7 thing out of laziness and they finally found something else I would be interested in hosting.

google it, it's not that uncommon.

i'm not doing anything, why do you think i reinstalled twice? it does this right out of the box.

the only thing i can think of is my external hard drive and bitlocker, i encrypted my external hard drive using bitlocker from the RC version, installed retail. i can access the drive fine. just very sporadic errors. never the same folder or file, just completely random.

going to try this next:

Disconnect the external for a bit and see if the problem still arises.

no need to resort to name calling...

one would think though if i have a hypothesis of what could be causing the problem that i've already tried to resolve it by removing it from the scenario.

i've tried it. it didn't help. thanks for the suggestion though, i'm looking for a way to fix it so i can use my external hard drive the way it was intended to be used.

Ive got the freakin "Windows 7 black screen of death" on my Asus laptop after doing the upgrade.

Tried searching the net for a fix, not much there. Tried a Proex, windows shell reset something or other; it didnt do anything. Anybody else have this issue? Anybody know how to fix it?

I get this also. It's fairly random. Sometimes I'll go days and never see it, sometimes I see it every time I right-click. My best guess is that it has to do with either:

1) The OS and [winamp/winrar/daemon tools] don't like to jive together on the context sensitive menus. Especially when right-clicking the recycle bin. So why is it only sometimes when those applications are always installed?

2) After coming out of hibernation.

Other than that I haven't seen any patterns. It's annoying as hell though.

^^I don't hibernate, nor do I have any of those apps installed. I started getting the errors right out of the box. I think it's a Windows 64-bit driver issue. I've tried everything and still get it completely randomly when I use Explorer.

Possibilities?
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (P35) chipset, I mention this because it controls the disk access
Nvidia Geforce 9800GX2, because it's so random, could it be a theme or display error with Explorer? although i've used the default windows driver and the nvidia driver and issue remains.
Just a bug in the OS, some file that makes an improper call in regards to my hardware drivers installed.

I don't know, those are my only thoughts.

Hmmm... I do have a GA-P35-DS3R motherboard. I'll have to look more closely at the event log the next time it happens. It usually cites the same dll.

I have a Windows 7 Pro upgrade disc and need to a clean install from XP. I can't find my Dell Windows XP disc anywhere. Can I use any windows XP disc I can find and will I void the licensing number of the XP disc?

If need be maybe Dell can sell me a replacement XP disc, but I'd prefer not to wait that long.

yea that's what i was about to say. i'm pretty sure the "upgrade" disc is actually still the full install. at worst it might need the key..not the XP CD

It doesn't require it, and since you can't upgrade from XP to 7, you don't need XP at all.

Workaround #3 works like a charm.

^^I did an upgrade way back in the day and I'm pretty sure it asked me to put in a disc just to verify that I had a previous copy. It was win98 -> XP but times could have changed by then haha

Since I had XP installed already, I did not need the XP disc to install Win7. I guess if I have to install Win7 in the future, I will need to take in your suggestions. Thanks.

Explorer went on another crashing binge this weekend. The dll that's always referenced in the event log is ntdll.dll.

If I do the student upgrade for 30 bucks or whatever it was from Microsofts site (I have Vista now) it says something about it preserving your files and programs. How exactly that does work? I know I will have to back up the data that I have now, but once the installation of Windows 7 is complete, will my old files and programs be in the same place as they were before? As I basically just replaced the OS without anything happened?

put windows 7 home on my netbook (acer 751, 1.3 ghz atom ) last night. i think it actually runs faster then XP home did. the video drivers are much improved. if adobe can get video card acceleration of flash video i'll be a happy camper.

it moves all your old files and documents to a folder called WINDOWS.OLD in the new system, you can access them fine just like before

i thought you could elect to do an upgrade from vista (which would retain all of your old programs/settings) or do a clean install (very much recommended) which would force you to reinstall office/itunes, etc.

i'm not sure about that part, i upgraded to 64 bit W7 from 32 bit Vista so i'm not sure if it's the same but it made a folder called Program Files (x86) which had all my old programs and then it had my new Program Files which were all x64 compatible
