Was in Ohio last weekend and got to try some good midwest beers along with some standards... we did kind of a style-comparison tasting:
Founders Reds Rye PA Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye
Founders Backwoods Bastard (Barrel-Aged) Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter Breckenridge Porter Porter
Left Hand Smoked Goosinator Doppelbock New Holland Charkoota Rye (Smoked Doppelbock Lager) 8/23/2011 12:07:47 PM |

So I made a thread in the Lounge for this, and even searched for the topic in The Lounge, but didn't know there was already one in Chit Chat. Figured this would be more a Lounge topic. Way to be, Chit Chat!
That being said, I had this in Folly Beach, SC recently and it was awesome.

I actually like the Pumpkin Ale that Big Boss Brewery puts out the best of the ones I've had.
I picked up the Cottonwood and it's really good, I also got a single of the Blue Moon Pumpkin just to see how it is. 8/30/2011 11:15:23 AM |

That first gulp of Gubna was seriously intense. I don't know if it was because I was drinking a weissbier before it or what. It was def the most intense sip of beer I've ever had in my life. I know it is 100 IBUs not sure what the other strong ass IPAs I have tried come up to. 9/2/2011 11:51:26 AM |

Most DIPA's are 80-100 IBU's, Pliny the Elder and Firestone Walker Double Jack are both 100 IBU's, DFH 90-Minute is 90
Oskar Blues makes some quality beers, I love G'Night (formally Gordon) it's an Imperial Red and of course the classic Dale's Pale which is the strongest Pale I've ever had.

May have been posted already, but the Dark Cloud munich-style dunkel lager by Mother Eearth Brewery (Kinston) is a new favorite.
If you like a good brown, it's a great summer option. It's lighter / more refreshing than a brown ale but still has a nice malty finish.

Anyone out there like Scotch Ale's? I haven't tried a ton of them, but they're one of my favorite beers. The ones I can think of off the top of my head that I liked:
Sam Adam's Wee Heavy
Old Chub
Belhaven

Actually a dunkel-lager is a winter beer, FYI. And if you're in Charlotte, the best is OMB's dunkel lager (but it's brewed seasonally)9/7/2011 9:16:42 PM |
