Someone posted on HF that the president of the AHL says that a team is coming to Charlotte. The contract with Albany as our affiliate is up after this season, so I'm crossing my fingers that a Raleigh/Charlotte affiliation is in the works. 1/16/2010 10:32:37 AM |

I've heard that as well. Does anyone know what Jeff Daniels status would be though? I hope this mean he'd stay in Albany, I'd love for him to remain with the Canes. I really like Albany and a lot of their fans that have made their way to the Canes message board, but a Charlotte team would make a hell of a lot more sense. 1/16/2010 10:54:42 AM |

I have to leave after the 2nd and normally I'd save this ticket for another game, but I can't miss an NHL debut.

Larose activated, Bowman sent back down. Looks like the higher-ups favor Tlusty and Dwyer then Boychuk/Bowman/Samson. Should be interesting to see who makes the team going in to next year. I'm sure any one of Hall/Seguin/Fowler would be in the mix too if we get a top-3 pick. 1/18/2010 12:20:27 PM |

Dwyer is on a whole different level from the rest of the kids, but of course Mo loves Slutsy. He's Mo's boy from back in TO.
Speaking of draftees, Canada's WJC captain Patrice Cormier won the dirtiest hit of the year award last night (@1:01):

i don't think that its a case of people favoring dwyer and tlusty over bowman and boychuk
but the kids will be just fine going back to Albany and getting top line minutes for a while longer. they'll be back. at least now they are gone we'll have a lower effort label and we can add back to our lead on the #1 pick :p 1/18/2010 1:12:40 PM |

I'd add Jussi and Joni to that list. Jussi gives us so many things in the way of he can play center or wing, is scoring a lot this year and is a great penalty shot guy. Also Joni does SO much for the offense and his outlet passes. 1/18/2010 2:07:57 PM |

Joni makes as many mistakes as he does good plays. I think he'd be next on the list if we were to have six untouchables, but for the right deal there's no reason not to move him. 1/18/2010 2:14:40 PM |

The one player I'm most interested in seeing what we do with is Matt Cullen. I know his contract is up and all at the end of the year, but I wonder if contract talks have even occurred with him. If we can't sign him now, might as well trade him (and Whitney if we can - stupid NTC) and get something and hope they sign back here in July. Cullen in my opinion (disagree if you want) has been one of the 3 best players all year and I'd hate to see him go, but if we can profit off of it might as well. There isn't a clause in the CBA that says we can't trade him before the deadline and sign him in July and I think that's what we could do with Whitney too if possible.
Since Eklund's website always has ridiculous trade proposals, I'm going to do my own. Whitney + Cullen to Chicago for Versteeg and Barker. Salaries nearly line up as Versteeg and Barker are each 3.083 million and Whitney is 3.550 and Cullen is 2.800 million. So those numbers would work, but of course numbers aren't everything. But hey I can dream. 1/18/2010 3:49:52 PM |

This is the second time you have mentioned this as either a "hole" in the CBA or as the absence of a clause in the CBA.
It's unrestricted free agency, players used in this specific way are called rent-a-players, and it's been around for quite some time.1/18/2010 6:42:38 PM |

I know Joni makes some mistakes too, but that is why I think he'd have an amazing plus minus if we could finally find a shut down defender to pair him with. Ward was supposed to be the guy who did the dirty work behind Joni this year, but as we've seen this year Ward has been the worst defender on the team. I mean tonight he went to clear a puck on the boards.......and ran into the boards allowing TB to gain possession again.
I think we'll trade both of Cullen/Whitney for either young players on teams looking for a playoff push or for picks and then sign one of them back. I really like Cullen, but with Sutter and Staal likely to be 2 centers next year and a top flight winger ready to be drafted at year's end I think we may need to go into the FA market looking for a number 2 center, however this all hinges on Staal's potential move back to center. I think we sign a center, draft a big time winger, call up or keep some talented Rats like Samson/Boychuck/McBain/Carson and maybe sign another defender depending on how much Karmanos is willing to spend. 1/18/2010 9:41:30 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
The only reason Staal isn't playing center is because he's hurt, so don't worry about a move back to the middle for him; it's coming. 1/18/2010 9:59:10 PM |

“The time has come now for Eric to assume the top leadership role for his teammates," said Jim Rutherford. We feel confident in Eric’s ability to lead his teammates and are excited to begin this next era.”" |

I feel for Roddy but this was long overdue. Wonder how he feels about this going down now instead of at the end of the year?
Also:
Edit from Chip Alexander's twitter:
Rutherford said he talked with Rod Brind'Amour and that Brind'Amourt could have vetoed the decision.
